Yesterday was our last day before the freeze and my daughter, her boyfriend, and I were getting all the tender crops in and clearing the garden and I said to her, “ this is kinda sad.” My daughter had the best reply & it changed my heart.... she said, “ no Momma, it’s not. Just look at our buckets, they are full!”

Hi Jess, Maybe green beans for $5 at the store is cheap, but nutritional value straight out of your garden is "priceless"!! ;)

  • @davidcorbett2195
    @davidcorbett2195 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Not to mention other costs associated with buying at the store.. fuel, wear and tear to vehicle, time, packaging that ends up in the landfill.. increased nutrition of home grown, mental health of working in the garden, time with your family and kids as you labor together, etc etc etc..

Since you have so many animals it might be worthwhile to heat your greenhouse with hot compost. Use some pallets or old wood to create a box, load it up with manure and bedding, then add trays, and plant on top. As the compost cooks, the heat rises to the plants above. Then in the spring you have seedlings and compost for your garden beds. 😁

So sad to see the end of the season. You're lucky and industrious to have been able to extend yours with a greenhouse. I wonder if you were to call a window replacement service, if you wouldn't be able to get some windows people are taking out. It's common to see a dozen windows for trash pick up here. People put them out early hoping someone will take them. When you do build your window greenhouse, set aside a little time to wonder about all the things people stood at those windows and waited for, and all the babies parents watched grow up on the other side of the glass.

Jess, next year you can cut the bean vines at the ground leaving the roots with their nodules in the ground for both the humus and the nitrogen thus improving your soil for the next crop.

A method for heating greenhouses in the winter is to use a wood burning stove. The iron heats up and releases heat over time, additional to the fire itself. This is one option.
A stone oven (made one out of bricks and lined with mud) could be another way to heat your greenhouse. The bricks will hold the heat and release it over the course of the day (or night). One fire lit in the evening would be enough to heat it through the night and into the morning of the next day at the very least.
Cold Frames are another option. You wouldn't have to heat the greenhouse at all, because the cold frames are effectively mini greenhouses within a greenhouse.

It's snowing here in Nebraska today, our first substantial snow fell on Oct. 14 this year (3 1/2"), so enjoy your last big harvest. And yes a 5 gallon bucket of food in November counts as a big harvest in my book. Canned green beans from the store never taste like home canned beans, so you are absolutely correct to get what you can, while you can, and you can't really put a true value on homegrown, as you well know. I do still have some cabbage, kale and celery hanging on, without any protection from the cold, but have been enjoying watching your fall garden....and those zinnias are still gorgeous!

OMG Sharyn you nailed it. I have noticed in comments how OFTEN people comment on how cute these two are, how much people notice how lovey-dovey they are. Sometimes I think that might be 50% of the draw of this channel - people just love how much love there is. Also, it's not just "Ryan Gosling", it's the "Girl" giving it right back. It's what people want to see, and there it is, just like that. Plus goats and zinnias.

♥♥♥ So glad we found out about you at the conference last month!!! Our mom is sad about the frost coming too, but excited to use winter to plan the spring garden! We started eating our moms canned green beans after she started adding a piece of shallot or sweet onion to the jar. A piece of onion (2 pieces in a quart) seems to mellow the flavor. Then when she heats them for supper she adds a tablespoon of leftover ham or bacon (cooked & diced)from the freezer to add flavor. ♥♥♥

Think of the money you save from having to go to the grocery store..... that adds up,too. Maybe this's taste will change as they get older, mine did.
I'm going to have cement pavers for the floor of my greenhouse. The stone will collect heat during the day, release it at night. Also, I was thinking of filling clear containers with water, inside the structure,to also collect heat and release at night...self heating greenhouse....

It’s hard to shut the garden down for winter. All that work that got done seems to have been for nought, even when you’ve been eating from it all summer and putting food up for winter. I almost get depressed. We had a garden doing just great but were forced to move back in July and, while we still own the property with the garden, it’s eleven miles away. I’m in a wheelchair quite often and really need to start getting a new garden started for next spring, so I’m starting from scratch by loading our new kitchen garden with vegetable matter so it can decompose over the winter. Time to work hard and hope for the best next year. With just my wife and I, pints and half pints are about as big as I go. Blessings!

Check out Eliot Coleman's book "The Winter Harvest Handbook". He's up in Maine and has mastered winter gardening. I prob wont get this right, but every time you add a layer of greenhouse plastic, you gain something like 2 zones to the south. He originally had cold frames inside of hoop houses. But he learned that using fabric/mesh draped over the plants worked just as well. I don't think he used much for heating, if at all. He's very focused on keeping costs low because he has to sell and make a profit - which as you can imagine isn't very high. I think he has a lot of great vids on youtube too. Good luck!

Caught myself doing the same thing today. Picking the last of the patio tomatoes and the ginger. Couldn't make myself go in knowing it's the last of the year. I don't have a greenhouse yet so now all I have are the tomatoes I transplanted indoors for next spring. My hubby doesn't like yard work and s grumpy even about mowing. I will ask about a greenhouse come spring. Enjoy your last taste of warm weather and think about spring and starting over. Love your new fuzzy pigs, they look made for the cold. Take care and pass around hugs, much love and peace. Blessings. ♡☆♡☆♡

My dog, Toby, got very excited when your dogs, goats, and pigs came into the video, like kisses and licks to your herds. I hear you about putting value on what you grow. Even if it's just about freshness, I go for it. We got very few tomatoes this year in SF Bay Area, it just got cool and foggy in July and August, but they are still coming in, and I ripen them indoors. I got loads of pumpkins and spaghetti squash, so I am learning to make spaghetti squash fritters and pumpkin pasta and pumpkin curry. My mustard greens (3 varieties from Baker Creek), collards, cauliflowers, cabbages, peas, and onions are what I'm tending now. I have kale from earlier but I don't really like it much, I really should find more recipes for it. My lettuce is gorgeous, now. Planting favas, not sure if they're for me or for the soil, but now's the time. I sure do love beans.

For heat in your greenhouse I recommend a couple of old hot water heater tanks, stripped of insulation on the outside and painted black. Filled with water, they soak up the heat and act as thermal mass to hold heat overnight. Or use steel 55 gallon drums. They’re just the right height to hold shelves for trays of seedlings or micro greens. I even once put a home built wood stove in a greenhouse, surrounded by the drums full of water. That worked out well. The water got hotter faster and held it long after the fire went out. But I’m in New Mexico and live at about 5000ft elevation. Hot summer and cold winter weather. Blessings! I saw you on Living Traditions and have subscribed. You have a sweet spirit about you! God bless you and yours!

I always leave my roots in the garden. If it dies, I just leave it in a pathway and me and the kids (I’m a home daycare worker, no kids of my own) stomp them down over time. I’m also the lucky being who lives in Zone 10 so my growing season is reversed - I start in October and end in May so I spend the summer inside, swimming, or planning. I just ordered a passion fruit vine and some grape vines and I’m looking forwards to some long term eating. - Jacob

Thoughts as I watch: I feel ya on soaking up all the garden vibes. I did the same a few weeks ago when I put my garden to bed. It about broke my heart to say goodbye....2018 was a stellar year for my humble little garden. Oh, and green beans....yes! I have a small garden space, only about 20 ft by 25 feet but we love our green beans in this house. I took a good chunk of my space and planted the heck out of the green beans. I did succession planting on the beans so that I would have beans all summer. We ate fresh green beans at least twice a week all season long, and I still was able to freeze some for Thanksgiving dinner. Your garden was beautiful, Jess. It was a place of beauty and peace, not only for you, but for all of us who came to visit your garden via TH-cam. Now, to rest and dream and plan for next year.

One of my favorite things to do is watching your videos while I am processing my small garden bounty. Last night I peeled and seeded almost a whole sink full of ripe tomatoes to begin the making of Marinara Sauce. (Couldn't do that while watching :) but tonight I harvested half of my marjoram and a good amount of my thyme. I have been searching for the blue cook of my moms. It has our family green bean canning recipe. I grew up eating them and it is the only way my son will eat green beans. It has a touch of sugar and a splash of vinegar. When I buy canned beans I drain the liquid off and add a teaspoon of sugar and a tablespoon of vinegar and heat them and they are similar in taste for a commercial bean. The best thing about the bean recipe is they are water bath canned because the beans are blanched and a hot brine is poured over them, so it changes the ph to high enough for the "pickling effect" but not enough that the beans taste pickled. Mom always poured off the picking juice and cooked them in water but I prefered to use the brine and just heat them up. They had more crispness to them. I will find the recipe and share because it cuts down on the time needed for big batches. This is an old, 100yo family recipe.

Blanch, and freeze then use the green beans as you wish, in soup, or stir fry beans with roasted almonds. I LOVE them that way so much more than any other way. Maybe your boys would give the fried ones a try, the almonds really flavor it up nicely.

@@myfriendtruth9177 😉 np ya know i pass a lovely home w a covered walkway that extends from the house to a detached garage. A covered walkway thats open to airflow maybe even screened in for further bug free comfort could be what attaches ur wee living space/gardeners cave to the green house 🤔! Happy planning! Were dreaming up an outdoor kitchen/patio integrated design thats got an enclosed space that's bug and critter free for sanitary cooking purposes and a very neccessary wind block.

You might contact someone who is a window replacement company and you can save them money from hav to pay to have windows disposed of. I have a family member in Illinois who puts the windows in his dumpster but anyone can take what they want from the dumpster

Aaah, that first frost is always so bittersweet. This year we were caught off guard entirely with ours and it was far more bitter than sweet. We are predicted to get ours by November 7th each year, but rarely get it before the 20th. This year it came mid-October. A month early. My fall garden was devastated. Very disheartening. Now looking forward to next year.

I love the new greenhouse revamp! The people I bought our privacy fence from had a window green house...it was amazing. I am a windows hoarder so..... Lol Maybe in my future! Being a new gardener I was so excited and didn't help my soil first so my green beans didn't grow good at all. The ones that did grow were nice snacks while I was in the garden. ;) I am fixing the fence around the garden now so the pigs (momma and 6 piglets) can till and dig up the ground. Then I found a free pineshaving horse poo mix so we will pick up a huge load and put on the garden area.
LOVE the mangalista pigs!!! I know I mentioned this before but seeing the older male with the little females after the experience we went through I just have to warn ya....A male pig will breed a guilt that is as young as 3 months old! We were given 2, 6 month old pregnant guilt in with a yr old male. they were very pregnant and one died during labor the first week arriving on the farm. Not sure how old your guilts are BUT I wouldn't keep him in with them long AND they can breed through the panels! A determined boar smelling an in heat guilt/sow.....oh my....lol. That same boar within the first week got out of the pen and into our hog pen breading one of our sows!!! It was insane because he was pbp....he was determined and their piggie penis is VERY long! So he left the farm very quickly. We were very new to pigs
    Happy Homesteading ~Shaina~

Tanya Healy I second that notion! I love lots of veggies, but green beans are just not my thing unless they're sautéed fresh or deep fried. I was only getting a few beans per harvest at the beginning of the season so I started just washing them and putting them in brine leftover from store bought pickles, then once they sat for a while I snacked on them and they were delightful!
