I absolutely agree! Unfortunately it's one of the most neglected and underrated games too! Besides the game being near flawless the music on here is so effing beautiful! 👍
We almost had one. Was a Facebook page and everything. The playable demo is still up I think... They changed a chunk of mechanics but they DID have the classic mode planned after having the game beaten once. Alas, I think they ran out of funding or just had to much life come up to complete.
@@dovalink744 Not only does it do the "character turns into an aerial fighter with shmup mechanics" thing, but that is the first combat session in the game before landing and fighting on foot.
One of _the_ great hidden gems of the NES. I got into The Guardian Legend just earlier this year thanks to another channel (U Can Beat Video Games), and, man, is this thing fun and addictive in a way very few other games of this generation can provide. As a big fan of RPG-style progression and shooters, it's a neat hybrid that brings those two concepts together almost perfectly, and the upgradable weapons are a lot of fun to use too. The Saber and Cutter are particularly useful. The soundtrack's also pretty nice, and I love how all the vertical shooter corridors have a unique background and boss. Man, I love this game! It's a property long overdue for receiving a lovingly-crafted remake (like Blaster Master Zero) or at the very least being made playable on NSO or something. Games rarely mix two great tastes this well. TGL is truly a special game indeed, and it must NOT be forgotten. I'd even say it's become my favorite NES game not named Mega Man. Happy 600th NES playthrough! Man, what an undertaking.
Funny that you should mention Blaster Master Zero. Now I know the Guardian Legend game for a long time, ever since a friend of mine who collects NES games told me about it, and from another longplay video. But up until I saw this video today I never thought of a remake similar in the style of Blaster Master Zero despite that I have been playing it and its sequel last month. Watching this longplay video I suddenly started to think "This game kind of reminds me of Blaster Master. What would a remake be like if the makers of the BMZ series got to work on such a project?" And then I saw your comment. Unfortunately there is little to no point in messaging those developers about this suggestion. The owners of the rights of GL must consider it financially worthwhile to consider hiring developers to make a remake or a sequel. This being re released on NSO would help create awareness and potential interest in such a project.
I have been looking for this game for over 20 years! Played as a kid and some how what I googled today (top down shooter on ground shooter space etc... Whatever the hell I searched) it finally brought me right to this game! (it was a list of best nes Shooters) The guardian legend! Wow. Had no idea the title. The nostalgia I'm feeling right now! Yes! This playthough is gonna bring back some Serious memories. I knew this game was good! But never owned it. Borrowed it from a friend. I'm a game developer these days... Thanks in part to games like this! Some of the music from it has been stuck in my head for decades! So happy to find it! Ok I'll shut up now! Haha
Holy crap. I'm echoing your sentiments exactly. I remember renting this game as a 7 year old, and I've been passively trying to figure out the name of it for decades. I cant believe in found it, and that there aren't crazy people like me googling top down shooters where the girl turns into a ship.
Oh man the Guardian Legend! Of all the games I didn’t own, this is the one I came back to the most. I forget who I borrowed it from, but I loved this game. This and Blaster Master were two games I just couldn’t play enough. And years later, when I first discovered emulation, this was one of the first games I checked out, and it was every bit as great as I remembered. I’m surely not alone in wishing there had been a 16-bit update. Imagine Space Megaforce shooting sections with Link to the Past overworld. It would’ve been glorious!
This was a game that fascinated me as a kid. It’s like if you take Life Force and mix it with Zelda, Crystalis and Blaster Master, all with a Phantasy Star type vibe. This almost felt like a Sega game to me back then. The soundtrack is amazing. I think if Brøderbund games had had better box art their games would have sold much better and would have been mainstream classics.
I loved this game as a kid and I still love this game and especially the soundtrack. Well, overworld tune can get me zoned out in a less pleasent way after wandering back and forth forever figuring out the puzzles and clues. However the feeling from the intro stages and into the place with the first letter is something that drove me forward through the whole game, even through the tedious clues and puzzles. It was epic back then and it is still one of the most epic sensations left in me. This game left the biggest impression on me through my life as it really opened up to me what games could be.
An absolute gem of the NES that, sadly, I never got the chance to play for myself. But its intricacies are certainly astounding. It’s as if MUSHA and The Legend of Zelda had a child and this was the end result. Somehow, I have a feeling that having the word “legend” in the title was not coincidental. 😁
I discovered this game back in 01 when I downloaded it via emulator on my old family PC. I fell in love with it. Years later I finally got my own copy and really sat down to play through it. It was even better than I remembered. Blending the top down action of Lifeforce with the isometric dungeon crawling of Crystalis and Startropics was masterful. The music is great, the story is cool, and the game play is amazing. Slowly uncovering more and more if the map and all of the connecting zones, plus acquiring new and weaponry was so rewarding. I love this game.
I never understood how to save this games progress, so I got so good at this game I played it all day, got about halfway through then paused at night, left Guardian Legend on pause over night with the t.v. off so my parents would shut it off, then beat the game the day after. I wish they'd remake this game todsy!
My favorite game of all time. Fun story, we were given the TGL code before we got the game, so we always used it since we started playing it. One day, a long time later, we accidently beat corridor 0 without the TGL code. Imagine our surpise when we discovered a whole new gameplay attached to the game that we though was just a space shooter haha
I used to play Zanac a lot as a kid, and not until 2014 did I stumble across Guardic Gaiden from one of the multicartridges, and I quickly enjoyed the game because there are a lot of similarities between the 2 games. Been playing this game for 8 years, and it’s such a fun game to play.
Ranks alongside Konami's The Lone Ranger as one of those games that everyone should have played back in the day, but surprisingly didn't. Just an underrated classic.
I've only ever heard of COMPILE from _Puyo Puyo_ , it's always wonderful to discover new games through this fantastic channel, and reminisce about the ones I'm familiar with. Will definitely be checking this one out to play! Thanks again, NC!
I've just beat it with the help of your playthrought, Thank you !! There's so many place to go to get the upgrades and hints. At first I felt overwhelmed by the warps and the layout of the map then decided I did not wanted to put 20h in the game even thought I was enjoying it so I used your video as reference. There's only so many hours I can put in a game per week. This week was finally The Guardian Legend ! Great game !
I remember my mom renting this for me from the local video store. I had no idea what it was and I was super impressed. I don't recall if I ever beat this game, I remember doing well in the shooting levels but maybe not fully understanding where to go in the corridors etc. Either way, what a great game. And the cover art! As soon as I saw it I knew I was in for a treat.
Eat your heart out Samus, you can turn into some dinky ball but my girl here can turn into a friggin space and aquatic capable jet/spaceship! Space Pirates? Psssh thats childs play. Our guardian here takes down an entire. frickin. moon. No partners or space federation. No gunship. She IS the ship son!
Literally I was a fan of this game. But never remembered the name. Even I tried searching but no avail. Finally it's here. In my childhood this game literally felt like a mission to complete. Love to see this.
Compile had lots of great games, no matter the system. Golvellius on the Master System, the Guardian Legend on the NES, Blazing Lasers on PCE... all great, some of the best programmed games back then, too. Would be cool to see you play through Golvellius one of these days, the Master System version is quite dear to me!

Man, I still own an original copy of this game. Played it over and over again as a kid. The music from this is super nostalgic. Might need to whip it back out and play it in all its originality. My other favorite was Crystalis, and I still own it as well.

I'm like the other commentor I'm 43 as well and what made me love this game so much as a kid was the fact that it was like your Gradius and other space flying shooters but then you go to the walk around part afterwards could gather different equipment yea man
I got to a blockbuster late on a Friday once and this was one of the only games left so I got my mom to rent it. Played nonstop the while weekend and eventually got it for a birthday
This game dungeon 1 song always stuck in my head for how many year and i never knew the game name. The corridor 1 theme also good too bad they have multiple theme. 1 actually had good music
No wonder why I could never figure out a way to win this game. There were so many corridors and weapons that needed to be attained, not to mention reading the map of the place. Great game, nonetheless. Didn't get the credit it damn sure deserved...
Fuking corridor 4. I never figured out how to open it. My thought process was your character never talked, so how were you supposed to ask the blue guy to open it? When you never asked as a player to interact or speak with anyone?? I eventually gave up and never finished the game. I figured when i was young i probably on my best try probably ran into corridor 4 3 times instead of 4 and just missed solving that puzzle.
When I played Nier:Automata I was constantly reminded of Guardian Legend. But they say it’s not a spiritual successor and has no ties. I think anyone who’s played both games would disagree.
I’m 43 yo now… and the music and sounds from this game just took me back to 1988, I remember this as being the hardest nes game I ever flipped
42 here and I agree, the opening theme song still hits a soft spot in my heart.

What better way to celebrate the milestone than with Miria's adventures, ye?

I hate lazy navel-gazers wanting remakes of their childhood games. However, this and Faxandu were strangely good games.
A Guardian Legend remake? Isn't that basically what Nier Automata is?
I'm joking, of course... but not entirely.

I figured when i was young i probably on my best try probably ran into corridor 4 3 times instead of 4 and just missed solving that puzzle.
yes, this game is from 1990 aprox and looks like nowadays indie games
I can still hear my mom playing til 4 in the morning in the other room...😂
When I played Nier:Automata I was constantly reminded of Guardian Legend. But they say it’s not a spiritual successor and has no ties. I think anyone who’s played both games would disagree.
If someone is reading this… I must have failed.
If you know you know
Finally i found it!🎉
