Just a quick comment to say thank you for helping me and my flat mate understand this absolute war crime of a thermostat! Been losing our minds trying to figure it out and the owners manual was no help at all. This video has solved everything. 10/10.

Same here it's the worst thermostat I've come across. why don't they just put a manual override button on it instead of having to turn off on the boiler.
      but the video helped alot

Totally agree. I just had this installed this weekend and being used to a Worcester Greenstar, that was easy to manually over ride and adjust for holiday periods, this is an exercise in anger management. Baffled by why it makes you have to programme 5 times when you may only want 4 (on/off morning & on/off evening). I have to adjust my "off" times to 5C to ensure i doesn't come back on. Maybe I'll calm down after a couple of weeks use but if not, I'll be looking for a new controller.

Thank you so much for this video, as someone termed it on a previous comment, this “war crime of a thermostat” 😂 has been driving me insane, since moving into my new house. Thought I was so stupid for not understanding how to programme the thing. Can’t thank you enough for posting this, as you have restored my sanity and probably saved me from bankruptcy with current gas prices, as now the heating won’t keep coming on when I’m not at home or at some ungodly hour in the night. I can truly believe this thermostat is the one boiler engineers get the most questions about!! It’s like the Da Vinci code!

The time you set and the temperature you tag to it.
Don’t set the temperature too high during times you want the heating off.
E.g. 08:00 - 22c (This will turn the heating on at 8am if the temperature Is lower than 22c and until the temperature reaches 22c)
10:00 - 15c ( This will turn the heating off IF the temperature is above 15c and IF the temperature stays above 15c)
16:00 - 22c (This will turn the heating back on if the temperature is below 22c and until it reaches 22c)
Note: Between 10:00 and 16:00 if the temperature drops below 15c the heating will come on until the temperature gets to 15c. So it is important if you do not want it to come on during an OFF period. You set the temperature to what is suitable for Your home.
Some houses loose heat more than others. So some homes will never drop below 15c a newly insulated property and some can go well below 15c like a draughty old farm house or cottage.
      Failing that:
Put it in the bin or call the heating engineer to change it for something better.

Like so many here, I too found this video incredibly helpful. I delayed watching it for a couple of years because I just assumed that I wouldn't understand it and I couldn't bear to add more frustration on top of a full tank of it, trying to work out this thing! I asked the installer to sort it out for me. He said he'd done it but roasting temperatures and stone cold radiators at random times of the day and night suggested otherwise....
I finally asked another installer to fit me a simple dial on the wall. He wanted a huge fee to do it so I left it again. Winter started to set in and I couldn't go through all this frustration again so I finally sat down to watch this video. I was amazed that I understood it. I did what was said AND IT WORKED!!! You've saved me a few hundred pounds for a new dial, you've saved me from being defeated and paranoid that the modern world is out to frustrate and confuse people. I can't thank you enough!

I can't tell you how grateful I am for this video! I'm pretty tech savvy and it's been doing my head in trying to figure out how to set this darned thing! I understood how to change the figures, but it's no good knowing how to change your 'set point temperature' if the manual doesn't explain what you're looking at in the first place and what your SPT actually is! And it's all very well being able to turn Frost protection on and off, but what use is that if it doesn't tell you what frost protection actually is!

+Cheryl Brownlow I lost my manual and an electrician accidently lost the settings. For 6 months I have been controlling boiler manually with the unit. Our boiler is in an outhouse and do not fancy going out at 6.30 am and bedtime. If you press the up button it will light the boiler and if you press up and down together the display will dim and be off. you can tell if it lights by the flame symbol. I am 80 this year and all for an easy life.

just read a review for this on amazon, and its a good idea for using the 5 time settings. she said - " you can set 5 different time/temperature bands which means being able to set different temperatures for different parts of the day. So it can be say 18 when you get up in the morning, drop back to 14 when you're at work, back to 18 when you get in but are still running around making tea etc, 20-21 for when you're cosy in front of the TV and then cool off again when you're in bed. !"
Id just used 4 of the settings and left the last one as off, never thought to make it a bit warmer when I sit down for the night.

Hi Haleema, The background temperature is the temperature that is programmed into the thermostat by you during a time period.
In this case I programmed it to be 10 degrees c at that time when we did the programming section. I then changed it manually as I wanted the heating on during that time. I changed it to 30 degrees as the temperature in the room was already 27 degrees c the signal would be sent to the boiler saying the room temp is lower than the customer asked for so it would start up.

Lucy, it is possible that the unit is being controlled by another device in close proximity to yours. You should change the RF code on the receiver and the sender next to the boiler. there are pins numbered on the back of the receiver unit, to change them you carefully pull out as many pins as you require to make a new code, such as 321. On the sender unit there will be a small component visible with numbers on the same, it will have little switches you can push down called dip switches. Dip the ones labeled 321 for this example. WARNING there is 240v of electricity in that area so please, please use caution by turning off the electrical supply and double checking with the appropriate tools. If you feel you are not up to the task please contact your engineer. You won't be touching any components but just as a matter of safety.

+Plumb Buddy TV Hi. Watched this vid for any hints. We have a Salus 300 RF. No probs since boiler install in 2011. Batteries in wireless thermostat died yesterday, replaced and pressed re-set pin - it transmits but the receiver does not respond. Any suggestions?

4 years in this freezer - sorry house. I've read the instructions a billion times I've watched your video a lot tonight sorry it's great and all but I still can not get the heat to come on. Next due on for an hour at 5am. I've drunk half a bottle of sherry in a vain attempt to stay warm - it is one of those big bottles too. All I want for Christmas is some heat, not to have to suffer the inevitable sherry hangover I will tomorrow and most of to have never heard of the Salus RT500.

I've arrived here after purchasing the rt510tx salus controller, along with the rest of my fellow purchasers who are teetering on the edge of despair! Who or what wrote the instructions! It would of been less confusing if they'd just left us alone to work it out for ourselves. I'm in shock at just how bad they are. I will never buy anything with the name salus ever again...unless I'm suffering from low blood pressure. Absolutely unbelievable.

Tanvir, Sorry for the long reply. To make this thermostat work like that you have to set the thermostat to a low temp all day every day across all the program zones and then when you want it on you can set the temp to your desired setting and it will maintain that until it reverts back to program.
it seems a bit round the houses and akward to have your heating on all day but these units are desined to save energy.

Well done on the video it cleared a lot of things up.Why this unit dose not have a simple on and off is beyond me. Also what do you do when you go on holiday? by the looks of it you have to reprogram everything to 10 degrees. I tried the frost button but the timings just over ride it. Would not recommend this unit to anyone (unless it was kanye west can't stand him)

Fantastic, had one of these for a year, could never figure it out properly, was only when I accidently dropped mine in the dogs water bowl and had to get a replacement that I found this video. Mines now set up properly and I understand what I've actually done. Still mystified why there has to be a fifth daily program option, 4 I can understand, on, off, on off, the 5th makes no sense but now I've got it set to ignore that anyway.

If the Receiver has lost communication with the thermostat you could try re setting the jumper switches to a different pattern. This effectively changes the address code of the thermostat and receiver. NOTE: If you change the jumpers on the thermostat you WILL need to change them to the same pattern on the receiver with the power OFF.
I would not recommend doing this unless you have experience with domestic electrical systems and Health and safety surrounding it.

Great video to explain a needlessly over complex bit of kit. I find the 5 programmes pointless, it would be far better to have 6 then you have the option for 3 different on periods during the day. The only point of the 5th is to keep it running up until your first programme when it would come on anyway, seems entirely inefficient to have it coming on and off all night when a 3rd period before bed would likely get the property up to a nice temp that will last roughly until it's back to morning.

I am completely confused. You can only programme this thermostat twice. I don't understand what programme 5 is for. Surely there should be 6 programmes so that you time it to come on at least 3 times a day. If I set programme 5, it can come on but as there is no programme 6 you can't set it to go off.

  • @Split10uk
    @Split10uk 7 ปีที่แล้ว

You have loads of praise for this video so well done, but you don't to set the low temperatures.
When its off it's off, there is no need to set it down to 10 degrees.
The only temperature that matters, is the ON time.

    • @DynamicThings
      @DynamicThings  7 ปีที่แล้ว

Split10 thanks for the reply, during the time your heating is "off" the only thing telling the boiler that there is no need to be on is the temperature. In the video the example is for 10 degrees. If you know your home or space will not drop below 18 degrees for example you could use that temperature instead of 10 degrees.
If you wake up at 0600 and you would like the place to be warm for that time you could set the time to 0530 and temperature to 22 degrees. At 0530 if the place is below 22 degrees the boiler will start and begin to warm the house.
Let's say you then leave the house at 0800, you will set the next time slot to 0800 and let's say you do not set a lower temperature and leave the temperature at 22 degrees. This means after 0800 the boiler will maintain 22 degrees until the next time slot. So if you come home from work at 1800 the thermostat will have been maintaining the temperature in the house at 22 degrees this is ok if the heat loss in your home is really low and the boiler may not have started many times however, if the heat loss in your home or space is high the boiler may have cycled on and off a substantial amount of times using a lot of gas to heat the home while you are not home which people do not want, some people however see it as they are keeping the warmth in the place. No one is wrong it is down to their choice.
Long story short, there is quite a number of variables to know which justify keeping the home at a constant temperature all day or just to heat the space as and when required.

But how do we over ride the programming and turn the heating off and on only when it is needed, i need heating off and on at different times each day, and them times change each day depending on weather conditions. I need to be able to manually turn the heating off and on.

I cant believe what people are saying about this thermostat/timer... I have fitted over 100 of these units and never had any problems ever, I find them easy to set up and reliable! one very important thing to note is to change the jumper settings on the back of the device so it has a unique code or stray signals can make life hell.
