- There is gold on Indonesia's Sangihe island, and a Canadian-listed mining company has a permit to exploit it.
Environmentalists say the gold mine threatens the island's ancient forests, which are home to endemic birds. Locals fear it will affect their water supply.
The BBC visited the remote island to see what’s at stake.

Large proportions (say ~30%) of mines like these in Indonesia are government owned. They aren't only fighting against a demonized white foreigner, they're fighting against their own government, who is likely less gracious than the West when it comes to accepting critique from its citizens. The Indonesian government wants Indonesia to be developed. So, the Indonesian government does so by allowing successful foreign countries to do so for them. That means the Indonesian government has moved the risk and costs of this to foreigners. This is a clever move on the Indonesian front. And, they get fame and respect for Indonesia as a resource-wealthy nation, they get appreciation of the Indonesian rupiah, they get jobs for Indonesian locals, they get to tap into the West's regulatory framework to avoid excess environmental damage, they get developed infrastructure.
Its an important story to share by BBC. But, I wonder if their are any conflicts of interest here.
Large-scale industrial mining is a dirty business. That island is too small, and its ecosystem would be irreparably changed.
Those small miners are not the threat, the large-scale mine is.

FYI, the Sangihe vice-regent, Mr. Hontong, have strongly opposed the mining and stands with the locals. Too bad, this June, not long after he wrote down a letter requesting the cancelation of the mining to the Indonesian Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, he suddenly passed away on a plane while traveling back from work. And its kinda odd for many Indonesian here. Some also asked to investigate the deaths. Authority said that he got a sudden heart attack (based on autopsy result). But, still its a mystery until today and many was speculated that his death was connected to his opposing statement about the gold mining in Sangihe.
Indonesia will be regretting this decision 20 years from now....
Unfortunately, it won't take that long for the rest of us to see how regretful Indonesian gov't's short-sighted decision. We are heading toward a quiet planet except the noise of the human.

It is a little more nuanced than the BBC states. The licence held by the company is almost certainly an exploration licence. This gives them an area over which they can undertake activities, which in turn will be subject to further licences e.g. if you want to put in a bore hole you will need a permit, you will pay compensation to the government or the local communities depending on whose land it is. The area a shown in the map will not be the area of operation. It is true that the mining is likely to be destructive, but how large an area or where is not described. It might well be possible for the mine to have a small footprint, it might be big and ugly. It is not described maybe because the company has not yet established what it is going to do. Is this a good mining company with a good track record? Unknown. Nothing is presented here except a map with a huge area of the Island that the reader assumes to be the area to be exploited.
The illegal mining is an uncontrollable insidious threat. Illegal mining pops up everywhere in Indonesia where gold is to be found. The people actually mining may not be using mercury but mercury will be used it always it. Some great NGO's try to modify this behavior by introducing systems where by a fraction of the mercury leaches into the environment. Law enforcement against illegal miners is usually non-existent, in fact law enforcement normally becomes part of the problem as state actors extract rent from them and enable them to subsist. Indeed most illegal miners do subsist, they have hopes of making money but they rarely make more than enough to survive.
Gold where found in Indonesia leads to tragedy. It is hard for companies to do the right thing, it is made easy for them to do the wrong thing. Some members of the local community will benefit, but most will not. The environment always and sometimes species suffer too.

Sangihe is a typical small tropical island. With the advent of big mining companies encroaching, any small island's eco system, environment and pristine rainforest will be decimated with untold damages. The mining's not worth it !
Those who oppose the large-scale mining, should also oppose the local artisanal miners who already use cyanide and create toxic waste.
Here in the Philippines, we are also fighting that kind of problem.
The government will not listen to you because you have no influence, no power, and most of all no money.
Especially if the Executive Department of that country does not prioritize in taking care of the country's flora and fauna, mountain ranges, rainforests, proper and efficient law enforcement against the illegal animal traders, the illegal mining, illegal logging.

Legal Mining Companies are still better than illegal mining companies that had already dug in Sangihe. Native people who work in illegal mining had polluted the environment and no NGO speak about it but when a legal company such Baru Gold want to mine area with strict environmental guidelines, many NGO's suddenly care about environment. In memory of Mr. Helmud Hontong, Vice Regent of Sangihe Islands who fought to revoke this mining concession and died of mysterious reasons soon after.
This is the reality of Indonesia today; the Central Government is too pro-business, and under the pretext of "increasing prosperity to all Indonesians", are destroying nature, not listening to the will of the residents in the region, and will do anything to make way for these nasty ambitions. When it comes to big business interests, the Central Government moves as fast as possible to make sure smooth progress, but when the people are in dire need, they move slowly like a snail on one side, and on the other, "mobilize" their resources such as the police, some of the media, and "buzzeRp" to ensure their principles and agenda is carried out, regardless of what the people wants. The Indonesian people on both sides gets agitated every day from what the Central Government has been doing (not just in mining, on a lot of other things too), and there are strong political sentiments that is dividing this nation apart.
Honestly, we need more politicians like Mr. Hontong who still listens to the people. Always be critical to the government and big business interests!

Very biased piece. Clearly the illegal mining and logging has had a terrible impact on the environment, but put nothing back in terms of rehabilitation or sustainable jobs. Publicly listed mining companies have very high levels of transparency and accountability and put a lot of effort into minimising impacts and ensuring rehabilitation is done to high levels. It’s hard for most to swallow but times have changed - miners are the new conservationists. Because they have to be. More importantly, through royalty streams directly into conservation funds, mining can provide funding to sustainably develop conservation areas and when managed correctly, leave an annuity to keep funding conservation efforts long after the mine has closed. Which is more than anyone else does and often makes the critical difference. The real story here isn’t about mining in sensitive areas, it is about corruption of local officials not enforcing laws, allowing illegal mining and logging and land clearing and the resultant environmental disaster. But that is obviously too hard a target, so the cheap shots go at the only industry doing something about it.
