    Those photos are great. It just shows, it’s the photographer not the equipment. As someone who has only been doing photography since lockdown I really loved this video, Gary. Thanks for showing what’s possible without taking out a mortgage. Much appreciated.👍

    Gary, I don't know where to begin. I took up photography at age 70. That was two years ago. I bought the best entry level camera I could afford at the time, a Canon SL3. I watched TH-cam video after video to learn how to get away from auto and to better understand light and composition. I am still watching and learning and having a blast. Lately, I have been having a back and forth as to whether to upgrade my camera. And then I look at my images on my computer and I see that when I did everything correctly, within the limitations of my camera, I have images that are sharp and beautiful. When I went beyond the camera's capabilities the images were soft, too much noise, etc. This video has opened my eyes to the fact that maybe I am putting too much emphasis on the camera and not enough on utilizing what I have learned. Maybe I should be considering upgrading my lenses instead of my camera. Great video. Looking forward to the rest of the series. Keep us abreast of your editing process and if the age and limitations of the camera made you adjust or change how you would have normally done your editing. Thank you.

    This is such a great project Gary. There's so much snobbery with tech that it's easy to overlook the most important element in photography, you, the photographer. It will be very interesting to see how things work out!

    I've been saying for a long time on YT that the craze for more megapixels, etc etc are over blown. I still use a 10MP Olympus and the images are as good as my E-M5ii when I see it on a 4K monitor. Really glad that we have someone like you to bust the myth of having the need for more and more MP cameras. Thank you!

    I remember a line from a movie that I saw some time ago in which an actor said, " It's the singer not the song!". You have proven this quote to be accurate once again. Nice work. Thanks for this video.

    Absolutely love this idea and looking forward to seeing how you get on.
    A few years ago my daughter started joining me on my photography trips and to begin I got her a simple point and shoot camera (she was only 9 at the time) it was alot of fun pushing the tiny camera beyond its limits even holding nd filters in front of it to produce a long exposure.
    With a little know how any camera can produce a good photo.

    I've lost faith in my photography and was thinking of giving up as all the vloggers have great kit and I'd never get a decent pro looking shot, but you've done this on an early digital camera, man you've woken this 68 year old up and given me a kick up the jacksy to get my act together.
    THANK YOU so much for a superb idea and video really looking forward to getting my gear out again.

    Hi Gary, what a cracking video. Like a lot of amateur photographers I often read up on all the latest offerings from the camera manufacturers and occasionally in my quest to capture the best image possible I question my choice of M4T camera - V - Full Frame etc.
    As you have said so many times before "its not about the equipment" and how true that is, it's far more about the photographers skills each and every time. This video is a classic and demonstrates - that technique and a good understanding of camera craft coupled with compositional skills is far more important than always having the very latest and greatest camera available. Thoroughly enjoyed this video and look forward to seeing others in this series.
    Best Regards
    Keith

    Tell you what I think? I’ll tell you…. I think it shows the stark reality of good composition and knowing what you want to capture is not reliant on fifty squillion full-frame megapixels and an overdraft. Here it is - interesting images from a person with an old and cheap’ camera body without a good live view screen or a histogram preview, never mind all the other fancy stuff we can do these days like focus stacking in camera. Great stuff, looking forward to more of this.

    Good to see you in my neck of the woods. Good experiment and the pictures already are starting to prove the gear doesn't matter too much. I started late to this game, so my first DSLR was a little Canon 200d with the kit lens, when everyone else was using 5dm4s and D850s. Some of the looks I got were entertaining.

    Great vlog Gary, so welcomed to see a pro not afraid of showing that older tech is acceptable to people who may be starting out on a budget, or simply want a retro camera. I loved my old 300D, the 10D, the lovely 20D, and the 40D, most today, would be spurned by so many. However, the images captured in Raw format, still produce, with care taken, perfectly acceptable images to many. Yes, the screens are small, and yes, I could go on, but for £9 quid, it's a steal. Now, where's my 20D hiding away.... Thanks for the share, really enjoyed it.

    Awesome. I love such reviews; especially at a time when a lot of photography Gurus become ambassadors for the newer camera brands and try telling aspiring photographers that good photography is possible only if one picks up the latest (expensive of course) camera gear!!

    My biggest surprise, I guess, was that the camera worked. The image quality was no surprise at all. Going back further than this (13 years before) I has a Kodak DCS on loan. I think is was a DSC200, but 1992 was a VERY long time ago. I remember a photography trip to Brighton where I was scared out of my wits that I would damage or lose this mega-expensive 1.5megapixel camera. I remember it being worth £10k
    It was blooming amazing, but, naturally, I remained a film shooter with my Minolta SLRs. As the end of the century arrived, the best I could afford was a compact digital camera which I bought just before my wedding and I have many memorable photographs of our honeymoon from it. Many compact digitals went though my hands in the following years as I reviewed them for various magazines and when we sold our house a moved, I invested in an Olympus E10 which was on another level entirely. I progressed to a Fuji S2 Pro which just blew everything out of the water up to that point and then to a D90 for lens compatibility from there on. At no point in this journey did I ever look at one of these cameras and say, wow, that's awful (well, some of the review cameras may have got panned, I really don't recall) but nothing I have ever spent money on in the digital world has deflated me in terms of image quality. There's always been something that's made me realise how the tech was progressing and despite this body being 17 year old tech, back when it was produced, it would have been one of the best bits of Canon equipment for the money (despite it looking like someone's just come out of Halfords with a can of "silver" spray paint).
    The part I am not sure of is where we go from here. Huge Megapixel counts are becoming meaningless as we don't have the eyesight to really appreciate it. The only main benefit to 100mp and above cameras is the ability to enlarge further and that's VERY specialist in a world where so much content is consumed in 5 inches (ohhh errr). The next generations of cameras must surely build upon the AI capabilities for exposure, focus, bracketing, DoF and more. A similar video in 10 years from now may be VERY different.

    • @GaryGough
      @GaryGough  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      A great read Andrew, cheers. I get what you're saying ref AI though. It's all about us using our brains less and less and that's a shame!

  • @mchjubjub6915

    I once read that a competent photographer can take a great picture with whatever they use to capture the image....

    Great shots👍

    Wow! Beautiful results and they really surprised me. It just goes to show what a basic camera can produce in the hands of a master craftsman. I am still using my 14 year old Canon EOS 5D Mark II, purchased new in 2008. While I do not have the histogram until after the shot is taken I do have the joys of live view and 21 million pixels, along with movie mode. It still produces images used as double page spreads and even a cover in magazines. I think this is going to be a fascinating series.

  • @valerievaleriem1769
    @valerievaleriem1769 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Enjoyed this video. I think it proves the point that it is not all about having the latest equipment in order to take good images. I got my first DSLR in 2006 and it was a toss up between the 350D and the new 30D. I went for the 30D as it felt more comfortable in my hands, but my daughter had a 350D and she really loved it. I still have the 30D in the cupboard, and I think I took more images on that than I did on any subsequent upgrades in camera that I have had since.

    I Admin a beginner/intermediate photography group on Facebook and the subject of camera upgrades is a regular one so I will be sharing this video in Group.
    When the subject comes up my advice has always been the same:
    1. Update your skills, you are the most important part of any image.
    2. Update your lenses, they are the eyes of the camera.
    3. Update your camera body only after the other 2 has been done.

    I bought the 350d new at the time. Shot around the clock a few times with models. succeeded by the 40d. And now the 7dMK2. (which unfortunately is gathering dust) But the 350d (and 40d) still works and is regularly used by my mother for the birds in the garden. The technology is 17 years later, but we had a lot of fun with it at the time.

    I think we are going to see that if the camera holds up for the whole series the pictures will be great, since you obviously know what you're doing with a camera. My first digital camera was a Canon 30D, then a 600D and I later had a 7D Mk1 and a 100D. The results were always as good as my average skills at the time. I discovered with those cameras and the Olympus OMD models I've been using in recent years that the number of pixels doesn't matter a jot (excuse the pun). A good picture is a good picture and it doesn't matter what camera you use. Glad to see you go to Blackpool a fair bit. I live a bit further inland but I'll be out when the weather improves trying out some of your ideas. I'm looking forward to this series. 👍👍👍👍

  • @carltanner9065
    @carltanner9065 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great shots, Gary!! It's really all down to who's taking the pics, not the gear. An 8MP camera will give anyone, today, perfectly good pics. I still use an old Canon PowerShot A460, and that's only 5MP. I print perfectly good 8x10 pics with it. For the net, it's still overkill considering how social media butchers pics.

  • @MRDJLINTON
    @MRDJLINTON 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    When I got my first DSLR in 2006 (Konica Minolta 7D) - this was the first thing I did with it, I was excited and had to try out long exposures to see IF there was a difference between my ISO 50 film images vs ISO 50 Digital. Happy to say, there was no 'real' difference other than waiting a week for the film to be developed vs instant on the back of the DSLR screen and a computer of course. That camera holds up to today's cameras, even though it was 6MP or 8MP in RAW. Simple tech always makes better images IF you've the creative mind to take advantage of it. Well done Gary for doing this and showing it ain't about how many MPs your camera has, it's how you use it to it's full capabilities and knowing how to achieve the look you want, be it with film or Digital and using your own style .... IMO. Looking forward to the rest of this series.

Unfortunately TH-cam is full of photographers who claim to be very experienced old hands yet it's obvious many of the rookie mistakes they repeatedly make tell the truth and reveal that in many cases they are not actually as experienced as they claim. Thankfully for those of us with real experience it's quite easy to distinguish the wannabes from those with real skill, knowledge and experience. Not so easy for newbies and unfortunately many of them seem to worship those who in reality are virtual newbies themselves, lol. Rant over. Looking forward to seeing your future projects and films here on the tube! cheers.

    Great photos Gary. Its amazing to see how much the Dynamic Range in cameras has improved over the years. Your 5D would have created a much richer palette of colors. Overall I am impressed, Keep shooting.

    This series will really illustrate the point of the question; what is the best camera? Why it’s the one that you own of course! You’ve also given me great inspiration to deeply explore Fairy lake near Honey Harbour on Georgian Bay in Northern Ontario. It’s a small lake on a small island that is located in the greater Georgian Bay. Previous visits have always been with another couple so there’s little opportunity to explore. I’ll have load the kayak and head there selfishly on my own after the winter thaw.

    Fantastic images and the perfect demonstration of composition, knowledge and technique trumping gear all the time. With all the effort the camera manufacturers put into promoting the newest latest cameras your video serves as a valuable reminder that the gear we have now is absolutely superb. I've been using the D850 for 2/3 years and will continue to do so. Really looking forward to this series of videos. Great work Gary 👍

    Fantastic video Gary, a time machine to the past with really interesting observations bringing home the improvements since. Love the cost challenge, which shows how a good photographer can achieve great results with cheap equipment; a bit like a stellar musician would always get something from a battered instrument. Always loved your video from a few years ago when you’d bought gear off Ebay, really reassuring for a tight budget 👍🏻. Many thanks, David.

    Well Gary, many folk have said... its shows its down to the photographer... you.... but the main question is "how do you feel about those pictures.???" I'd love to know your thoughts....as lets face it... isn't it all about taking shots that you find interesting and pleasurable... as for the series... wonderful idea and one I can see "flying"... really looking forward to seeing how you go on with it and fingers crossed it will still be working at the end... then... why not pass it on to a youngster just starting out.... thanks for the really interesting video... looking forward to the next one... Yoki...

    What a great idea and challenge Gary. I will watch with interest. Its great to see that you want to push yourself and old technology in our hi tech world. Which we totally take for granted.

    Beautiful photos and it goes to show it's not the gear that matters but the person behind the camera and the time to look for around

    Just shows that expensive gear is not the most important requirement in photography - great shots! I had the forerunner to this, my first move into digital photography was the 300D after trading up from my Pentax P50.

    Awesome shots Gary. I know where you're coming from. I'm an R5 owner. But 9 days ago, I bought me a Canon 60D. Not as extremely De-Teched as you. But looking through a viewfinder and composing a shot before "Camera on" is something that i've very much missed. Congrats on the Old tech theme. So so very interesting.

    I had one of these. Got it for a friend to learn on. The fact is that when you compare it with todays cameras, it seems like crap in many ways. But, this camera has all the function ability that many of todays leading photographers used back in the day when they were making their names in photography. Like you said, the screen was crappy and small, but the thing was, that when you loaded the files into the camera onto a computer with a monitor that could show the true resolution of the sensor, you were pleasantly surprised. So if you got past that, you can do with it. So I gave him that camera, and he had only ever used an iPhone before, and told him it was more than good enough to learn the basics of all the settings on. He likes it, and if he can shoot good images with that, then he can do so on anything. This just gives him a low cost way to see if he would get interested in photography, and not have to pay high sums of money in case he found he didn’t want to do more in the end than point and shoot. It was a good idea of you to show what you can do with the most basic equipment , and I wish more would do it.

    Great shots Garry,
    I’ve just purchased a DSLR 14 years after my previous purchase, although I may put my camera down for a few years.
    Your video has just confirmed that the operator is in charge (well at the moment they are) , when it comes to capturing the moment.
    It would be interesting to see what photographers of different levels could do with the same camera and locations at the same time.
    Anyway , thanks again for a great video.

    Love the idea of this series. Great starting video. Shows what shots can still be gained on older gear. Be interested to see what the images look like with budget filters as well. How do you think the images will look in print? Will they lack detail when blown up. Thanks

    This is awesome. I bought a used 2011 Olympus XZ-2 pocket camera and I am really impressed with the printed 8x10 photos. I’ve been thinking about buying a FF old camera. I can’t wait to see your series with this camera.

    Brilliant! A great idea and outstanding images. As others have said, it's not the gear that gets results, it's the photographer. I predict that when it comes to making large prints the results will be equally as impressive. I have a 36 inches x 24 inches print on my wall from my old 12MP Canon 5D (2005) - a camera that I still occasionally use - and it looks great. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

    Awesome stuff Gary. I have an old 20D / 1DMk3 / 1000D and they more than meet my expectations as an advanced amateur. I print mainly up to A4 and prints are very good. The 20D pre-dates the 350D by 1 year but the 20D is much better build quality and you could pick one up for £20-30. For those just starting out I'd always recommend a used bargain as their first entry to photography. PS: Well done to Canon - the quality of their gear is fab!!!

    In 2005 I was still mostly doing film photography! My digital cameras had a very annoying shutter lag. So it wasn’t until the 7.1 mp Olympus SP-510UZ came in 2006 that I went completely over to digital. And I didn’t buy a DSLR until 2012 when I got the 18 mp Canon Eos 550D. Which I still keep because it has a fully operational version of the Black Lantern “firmware” (running from the SD-card) which offers a few functions that even my newer cameras don’t (70D, 90D).

    Really really enjoyed that Gary! Who was it that said, 'the best camera is the one you have to hand' (or something like that! Lol!) I suppose the draw back with this little fella will be if you were to print larger images only having 8mp but hey ho! Looking forward to the next one! All the best
