Blyth Lighthouse Experimentation is key to learning photography

  • In this video, I explain why experimentation is key to learning photography.
Earlier this week I headed to the Northumberland to photograph the awesome Lighthouse at Blyth.
I arrived the night before to have a good look around and seek out locations for the following morning's sunrise shoot. At this time I suggested that it makes sense to experiment with your photography.
Taking images at a sunrise location at sunset rarely offers great opportunities for incredible photography. Because of this, I felt I could be a little daring with my compositions.
Experimenting with your photography is such a great way to learn. Photograph every angle possible. Change compositions by going outside of your comfort zone. It's how I improve and learn and can only help you learn too!
Please watch the video and feel free to leave a comment.

When I was a kid I lived in Blyth. I spent many many hours on that cold and wet jetty fishing. I also joined my first camera club at school just up the road in Newsham infant school. I have just finished my career as a photographer and videographer in paramedic education with the South Central Ambulance Service

Hi Gary, just a quick note about when you are shooting in wet conditions. In fishing angler's have a small table at their side on which they have their bait and other items on and if it's raining they have a little umbrella which covers the table and the items on it keeping everything dry. One of these umbrellas would fit onto a leg of your tripod keeping your camera dry from rain and sea spray. The manufacturers of these umbrellas are Preston Inavations and can be found in most fishing shops. They retail at about £ 43 pounds which I think is a small price to pay to protect your camera and lens from sea spray. ( I use one myself). Best regards Nigel

Cracking video Gary, whenever I see a location I like on TH-cam videos that I like the look of, no matter where they are, I tend to save it to my Google Maps. I’ve just looked at Blyth and though, to be honest it’s doubtful I’ll visit anytime soon, mainly due to financial constraints and worrying about what’s going to happen in the near future with the cost of living etc, the same as most, it looks like an amazing place. Those piers, the lighthouse, that awesome looking beach for when the weather is great ( it is the North East ), even things around the area, the old gun battery, the bandstand which normally wouldn’t do anything for me but being so close to the beach or could work, and not forgetting the beach huts which I know you like shooting from time to time. Definitely a place worthy of careful consideration.
    P.S.
That photo with the lighthouse light pointing directly towards you is simply fantastic

Missing those fish and chips was truely the saddest point of this video - I wont tell you how nice those are on the sea front there...! When I found Blythe, I tried that pier in windy conditions. Yeah.. think back to the video of you on that suspension bridge in scotland trying not to look down at the waterfall, and you will get me on that pier. I was clinging on for dear life feeling like it was all going to collapse! Beautiful photos to be had there tho, as you very much demonstrated! Thanks for posting this one 🥰 There is so much along that coastline, I cant wait to get back there....

I have to laugh we were there (Blythe and Whitley bay) about a month ago and I said to my partner Sue, I wonder what Gary Gough would do at this place 😀. Really like the image @12.00 in, both the colour and black and white, also the photos at the end of the film are very pleasing too! As always love your images and your positive and encouraging narration, shame about the fish and chips! ☹️. We’re off on holiday at the end of the week to the West coast, Allonby on the Solway firth on the edge of Cumbria, really looking forward to creating some Gary Gough inspired long exposures, some bird watching and bird photography! Cheers Gary 👏👍😀

Here's a great tip for you Chris... take the wife to a really boring location and really drag out the day. She'll hate it so much, the next time you suggest going out with your camera she should suggest you go on your own. Boom! You can have that one 😁😁

@@GaryGough I've managed the first part, she use to come with me to carry my tripod, but now doesn't want to do the standing around.
If I did say I was going she would suggest a hotel, and I'd see about 5 hours in bed, or never leave the bar after dinner and miss the sunset and sunrise 🤣💤

Despite that you've given me ideas to work on when re-visiting what is an interesting location with different aspects being adjacent to a working harbour. Unfortunately for you, the local fish & chip restaurant caters for day visitors and locals rather than tourists, and will close well before sunset.

Do you have a video on how you work out your time when using a 9 and 10 stop filter along with a polarizer or a site that you recommend to help figure out how to determine the time? I just picked up a Lee 10 stop and have a polarizer and would like to start having a good at long exposures. Thanks again for taking us along on your adventures and sharing your knowledge.

That’s a great video, I’m hoping to get to the Northumberland coast next summer, having seen it for the first time in April from a train - it looks spectacular. I think you actually had the best light from sunset when you were doing your piece to camera; the rusty railings on the pier were reflecting the colours of the setting sun, as was the other pier and the side of the lighthouse, and the sky was more interesting. But, by the time you began photographing, it looked like you had lost the best light.

Fantastic location Gary, and some cracking images, the master of the fine art stuff for sure. No fish and chips is tragic, when I was in Newfoundland I pretty much lived on fish and chips on every outing. Loved the video and the images and the awesome photography tips as always, thanks for sharing.

I am the same way; can't be farting around too long. I do more nature photography than the types of landscapes you do, but I go as far as to slap a 300mm on as soon as I exit the car so if I see birds or wildlife while traveling through the woods. I literally never walk around with all of my gear in the bag.
I get so little time I try to take advantage of all of it. Most places I go I have been to many times, so I do take time to look around and try and find new ways to present it, but I always have my camera on the end of my tripod with the legs closed. When I see the composition I can plop the camera down and go to it.
And I bring all my gear with me because I never plan anything, lol. I often go out with an idea in mind, but in a moment I can switch to everything from landscape and nature to macro or wildlife and birds. Whatever I find I can make best use of.

My Pentax k-3 came with a small cover that you are supposed to put over the eyepiece in certain long exposure situations, because it is said that stray light coming in through the eyepiece during that time can spoil your exposure.
I notice that I have never seen anyone who does long exposures on TH-cam use these covers, or have not noticed anyway. Have you ever used one?

    • @GaryGough
      @GaryGough  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Canon cameras tend not to suffer with light leaking in through the viewfinder. I do use a cover though during very long exposures on bright sunny days. 👍👍

Great video Gary, as ever. Do you ever use a reverse grad filter at sunrise/sunset? I can't recall ever seeing you use one and I wonder why that is - unless it's because you like to use two shots at different exposures for sea and sky and blend them?

    • @GaryGough
