After cycling through several different radios such as a Kenwood TS590SG, Icom 7300, Flex 6400M, Yaesu FTDX101D, and Mission RGO One, I finally realized that the best bang for your buck is go back to a 590SG, pick up a used Elad FDM S2 Receiver w/ SDR Console, and possess a better combo than any of the rigs I've ever had. Simon is truly an amazing programmer, and has provided the ham community with a wonderful piece of FREE SDR software. His "World Map" is also wonderful.

I've been using SDR Console for years, agree it's the best. One of my favorite features is the record function. For example, i recorded quite a few hours of the CQWW CW contest a few weeks ago, recording the entire cw section of bands. I can go back and listen to it any time, tuning up and down the band just like it was live, truly amazing.

Thanks. I've played around with the various SDR software packages in the past and found them very hard to install and get working, and with odd interface controls that didn't do what I wanted the way I wanted it done. One package did some things right. Another package did other things right. It was frustrating. So for the past 3 or 4 years I set SDR aside. But this looks like it's time for me to get back into it. Again, thanks.

It may be windows only, a complete deal breaker for so many, and closed source but absolutely is one of the best (Windows) SDR applications. I have not yet tried running it under Wine but it does work in multiple different VMs I have tried on my Linux box, in docker, and in sandboxed windows installations. Don't walk away from a good thing just because it doesn't run on your current operating system.

When shopping for SDR hardware look for a an ADC with a higher bit depth. Bit depth directly translates to dynamic range. Flex and Apache Labs Anan are 16 bit and considered the gold standard ATM. The RSP devices are 14 bit but some of the dongles may be as low as 8 bit. it's a shame the Hermes Light 2 (14 bit) does not do 6m otherwise Id really recommend it to you Hayden. for around $600 it does 85% of my Anan. Thetis which runs on Anan and the HL2 is complex but once you try noise reduction 2 and adaptive pre-distortion there's no going back. NR2 is simply better than noise reduction of any radio and the pre-distortion means having one of the cleanest TX signals. You may know Icom have recently added it to the7610 and the new IC-PW2

So last night was my 1st opportunity since your video release to really put SDR-Console to the test against my daily drive SDRplay SDRuno running on my SDRplay RSPduo & I have to say & Id be happy to see your test results.
So last night from my location in Melbourne's N/E @ 120M's above sea level with an uninterrupted view for 270 deg from N through to N/W I fired up the RSPduo in the FM Broadcast band & noted how many stations I could see on the water fall & hear between 88Mhz & 95Mhz which was over a dozen including some very remote stations from Mt Alex @ Bendigo, The Papps in the Victorian High Country & several stations from Gippsland.
With SDR-Console on the same Win PC using the same Ant & the same SDRplay RSPDuo I could not see on the water fall or hear any of the remote stations from Bendigo Gippsland or the Victorian High Country.

The SDRplay devices have several built in notch filters. There is a chance that you need to dig into SDR Console’s settings and disable the broadcast band filters (one for MW and one for FM).

Yes I have discovered the RX-888 MKII but I haven't quite pulled the trigger on it yet. I think the bandwidth is 64 MHz, so you can theoretically do all of HF + 6m too.
I don't have a heap of interest in monitoring the whole of HF at once, it's mainly 6/10m - although maybe later in future. The RX-888 I think also has a few niggly issues, but can be resolved. I think it runs really hot too!

it's all the things you don't know about that make it interesting.
like finding some HF club members in the middle of the outback chatting.
Or the Wiluna Marine Weather service on 8.113 Mhz.
I also found my Ethernet over power was putting out a signal across the whole HF spectrum. it has band block filters (in effect) for Ham bands but still.
SDR Console is the only sdr software that has real support for it and the author of SDR console was posting in the NextGenSDRs group. HDRSDR kinda works. Most SDR software isn't designed to handle the full HF spectrum. So really its SDR Console only.
It needs very recent motherboard and cpu with rock solid usb3 support. It draws very close to the max usb3 current and continuously while active, which could be hours. very few devices do that. It does runs hot over and extended timeframe hence the heat sink case. mine has never overheated but I guess that's possible. My PC is an older Haswell cpu based one. it runs fine except when I try OBS recording or if there is heavy disk activity. that gives audio crackling. but that doesn't affect me when I'm just listening.
It only has a 64Mhz low pass filter. so when your using it 0 -32Mhz it can pickup aliases. I've never seen them. Mine is only connected to HF ham band resonant antennas which probably helps.
RX-888 MKII is a few years old now and I've not seen anything better to replace it.
Most of the chatter on the NextGenSDRs group now is about WEB-888.

With so many hams using it, you'd think it would be the first thing to do. I was told it was because they're building it to work across platforms, so that makes sense. I have an Airspy HF+ Discovery SDR.
I use it within the amateur radio bands, specifically in LSB and USB modes for voice communication, synced with my radio.
I use SDR Console, but I would like a feature where selecting a signal on the waterfall automatically adjusts the frequency so that the signal is contained within the corresponding bandwidth, which is typically around 2.8kHz.
Does SDR Console have this automatic frequency adjustment feature? Didn't find it... 73 de CT2HUU

I sure wouldn't mind a video about how to download and install SDR Console. The web page appears to be a minefield of 'Click Here To Download' ads for everything but the actual download. Then it leads me to a page where I have to sign up for a file-sharing site and provide it with my private info in order to get the download. Have I read that right? If so, I'll have to pass on the program. Too many hooks into my personal info. If not, I'd like to know the trick to getting the program. Thanks.

    Hi Hayden,
On the strength of this video I purchased an RTL-SDR dongle and downloaded and installed the software. It is, as you say, extremely versatile EXCEPT the audio is awful.
I'm running this on my laptop and it sounds like the audio is clipping. There are numerous reports on the www about this, and I have failed to find a solution. Curiously, if I record the audio through SDR Console, the playback is perfect!
Have you had any experience with this or discovered a solution?
PS. I tired to connect with you when we were travelling in Tassie but you were away at a ham convention in the states at the time :(

@HamRadioDX I get the same distortion regardless of whether I use the laptop speakers or Bluetooth headphones. Curiously, if I record the audio, the playback is perfect.

  • @godarklight

A cheap SDR can beat your 7610 - if you give it a better antenna.
The RSP1A has a 12bit ADC I think, rtlsdrs are 8bit, and I think the 7610 is either 14 or 16, which sets up the dynamic range.
You may be able to homebrew a sharp filter and increase gain to further tip things in the SDRs favour.
I use my SDR with an amplified 40m full wave loop antenna further away from the house and that generally stomps on my 7300 for weak signals.

    • @GlobalFlyer
      @GlobalFlyer 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

I cant go along with that. I tested the IC7300 against a TS590S against a RTL V3 Stick against a RSP1A. All in CW. The 7300 pulls out the weakest signals. Readability vs signal strength ist highly underrated!!
In SSB, the 7300 sounds a bit better on weak signals.
Both SDRs are nice, absolutely affordable and a charm to play with. But they cant serioulsy compete to a real TRX. The lack proper hardware based filtering is impossible to overcome in software.
      73, DL8YF

    • @godarklight
      @godarklight หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@GlobalFlyer I had very poor performance with an rtlsdr, I did use a ham-it-up for a while before switching over to an RSP1 clone.
The only reason why my RSP1 clone is beating the 7300 is because it has a few things in its favour. The SDR antenna is 50m away from the house rather than right next to it, reducing the floor somewhat, and the antenna has a homebrew pre-amp inside the head of it throwing the SDR more signal as well.
Using the same antenna, I'd expect the 7300 to win every time.
As I operate remote, I gave my SDR a web interface - OpenWebRX+, I usually zip across the bands with that first and then bring the 7300 to what I see, especially as the 7300's waterfall is unusable over a serial connection.
