It's sad to see him looking like this...but it's good to know that he recovered and became sober. I'm also pretty much an SRV fanatic...and I think his speech was different because it was before he became sober and he realized that something had to give. I think he thought he was going to die. Sad.
You can always see from which period Stevie's vids are.But what strucks me that despite being on drugs,he had so much love to give it broke through the drugs, you don't see that often,Its terrible he died, but fortunally clean.STEVIE RULES FOREVER!
S.R.V with his Guitar Charley! that guitar is a sick cutom the lip stick tube pick ups in it our awsome the coolest part of this whole thing is the song he plays in this video is dedicated to the memory of the man who made that awsome guitar Great video thanks for posting it dbfan
Seriously, I don't see how some people can say he wasn't playing that good here. This is by far the most intense performance I've seen of him. The feel and the emotion that goes into this one, how he makes his guitar scream out...it's just out of this world. If there would ever be a standard to which all live performances should be measured, it should be this.
Man...it's like he's making the guitar cry and then just cranks the gain and changes the tone just enough to makes it weep like its soul is being torn apart! Dang I love this performance!!!
I saw him at the Opera house in Boston, 3/85. He wore a long Hendrix style robe & same hat, but I don't remember there being a keyboardist yet. I saw him 10+ times and that was the best show of all. They closed w 3rd Stone.
For someone grinding it out, it's a very beautiful, soulful performance. I saw SRV both before and after he recovered. They talk about Hendrix, and I appreciate what he did, but to me and the special friends who witnessed him on stage, SRV was like some kind of a Sufi man, mystical, enlightened, like he didn't have think, or plan, it just came....
Hard Fact: It is common knowledge that SRV would keep "Crazy Glue" with him to glue the skin back on his left fingers. His fingers were torn-up much of the time from constant playing. The price he paid for being the best!
"I Hate to tell you this, But according to the clock we're supposed to stop, I'll put It this way, What We're here for Is to keep the understanding of love and what Its supposed to be I ain't gonna give up on It and It gonna give up on me, Lets just keep In our hearts and love each other put it to a long cause that's ever want and that's what we ever need" Ya with me"
All this time i didn't even know Stevie Ray. Last year a friend told me to look 4 him on youtube and i was blown away. My 3 favorite guitar players r Jimi Hendrix,Eddie Hazel and now also Stevie Ray Vaughn.May they all r.i.p
Looking like a virtuoso playing with soul practically patented, he was sleep-deprived, drunk, wasted...stupendous performance under the circumstances and all the more touching. Shades of Guitar Slim.
@soultaker1083 Fully agree. The emotion here is amazing. I keep coming back to this version and listen it over and over again and I always find something new that amazes me. Best rendition of Life Without You ever. Stevie is dearly missed.
I lived in South Austin in 1982 and saw Stevie many times. I saw him high and later, saw him clean and sober. Technically, I guess he played better sober. But, there was something about being there watching him play when he was high. I was high. Hell, everyone was high. You can't really compare the two Stevie's. Stevie High was soulfull...guteral even beautiful. Stevie clean was pure bright light and brilliance. Cant say which I liked better.
It's the strings. When you play awhile the coating on the string wears off and the sweat from your figures will cause the strings to rust or oxidize on your fingers. That happens when you play on worn out strings for at least an hour or so.
Wow..anyone notice he is playing with a solid Marshall wall...I'm not sure that I've seen another video with him having so many Marshalls and extreme lack of Fenders...But, this video just goes to show how his sound was more in his skill and style then his gear. Definitely 'the man' in his own right!!
did anybody see the facial expression at 4:33, its u can only see it for a split second wen it zooms out from his fingers. thats real blues cuz hes actually feeling it. physically aswell as mentally
I read a reaction of someone who said fingers can't be hurt by strings.Maybe it's different with guitars,i'm a bassplayer but i use to play without a pick, and i've played so long and heavy my fingers were bleeding.BTW,I know from Flea (RHCP)he had the same problem with his tumb.Stevie still rules!
I saw Stevie Ray live five times between 1983 and 1990. I went to college at TCU in Fort Worth and as a freshman drove down to Austin for a Halloween frat party and ended up buying a ticket for $12 to see Stevie live at the legendary Antone's on 5th Street and the rest is history!! I am 53 now and I can say without a doubt that Stevie Ray is the undisputed best blues guitarist to ever walk this earth!!! Clapton, Beck, Gilmour, BB King and many greats were at awe and mesmerized by Stevies magic. BB King even said this in an interview about SRV after he died! Much Respect!! th-cam.com/video/O_qT2lLmTrs/w-d-xo.html
sonido ,otis redin , jhimi hendrix, uno de los grandes guitarristas que nos dejo muy pronto ,las nuebas generaciones ,que lo sigan como ejemplo ,de talento y aportacion a la musica del siglo xx,como cutura.un clasico.
I'd bet it's graphite powder. He used really heavy string guages (I've heard as heavy as .015s for the high E), so slippery graphite would allow him to move faster with less damage. I got some on my hands from a snap-line a few weeks ago and it looked exactly like that. They didn't even have coated strings back then. As hard as he played he surely had them changed them every day. One other possibility is Super Glue, it's a quick fix for torn up fingers and attracts soils. All speculation.
Why the F*** is the Austin version of this video removed every time, it's the second time i have to read in my playlist 'video not available.Could somebody please upload it again,I like both versions.Stevie is so great i want to hear and see them all.
Those are called conchos, a Vaquero (Spanish-culture Cowboy) affectation, as far as I know they're just for lookin' flash for the Ladies. They shine in the sun when you're on horseback (and were generally made of Silver, so you could sell them if you went bust). Pretty sure whoever dressed Ol' Stevie was doing a little blow herself!
I love this song to death. I just listened to the Afternoon show rendition of this and there is so much more emotion in this one the in that one. Nevertheless, Stevie gave it his all every single night.
mi viene difficile preferire uno tra srv e hendrix.... io li vedo come un unico artista straordinario che da emozioni come pochi... grandissimi inimitabili.
@huyiy SRV plays with 13 / 56 on his guitar, and concert after concert, he hurts his fingers. Bluesman often use the superglue to strengthen their horn, i think it's something like that in this video.
although i will agree that he is totally wasted at this point in his career, i still think it is a real good performance. he is so incredibly free and unscripted here, caught up in his own world where nothing but the music matters. his playing may not be crisp or perfect as in other shows, but he sure gives a lot of emotion and unrestricted inner self.
His fingers aren't injured...that's what happens to your fingers when you've been playing a while, especially as intense as he's goin at it. Part of it is the rosewood fretboard
At 7:56 you can see the calluses of his fingers being peeled by playing so hard.I realized that,if you want to imitate SRV(if you can), you have to attack the strings with as much force as you can with both left and right hand.A lot of his sound comes from the attack of the the right hand with the guitar pick. You have to hit the strings as hard as you can. With your left hand you have to be able to bend the strings like a son of a bitch(even with your index finger).Watch out for tendonitis.
Yes, that is a fact about the super glue on his fingers. I have read about it & also heard it on television about SRV. Guitars were his life, first & foremost. His fingers wopuld not hold-up to his passion for playing that '59 Strat, therefore the super glue.
I met SRV and talked with him several times in Troy Wisc. before he died in the helicopters. That night, we were commenting on how ominous the helicopters looked surrounded by guards in the fog.
went through a lot of comments on this video and noticed the John Mayer haters.... I'll agree that SRV is the best guitarist that ever lived, but Mayer is a damn good guitar player. If all you have heard is his shit on the radio then please open your ears to his music. You'll discover a great guitar player and artist. There is a reason why Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton, B.B King, and all the other greats that are still living are calling him a legend in the making.
It's sad to see him looking like this...but it's good to know that he recovered and became sober. I'm also pretty much an SRV fanatic...and I think his speech was different because it was before he became sober and he realized that something had to give. I think he thought he was going to die. Sad.
Demais. Ele é espetacular...fantástico. Canta e toca com paixão. Sua voz e a guitarra abraçam minha alma e eu danço com ele...
absolutely extraordinary!!!! thank you
it could be the brand stevie used which was ghs but he also had massive strings.
Beautiful man
oh man! i live in finland and i've just recently discovered this huge talent called stevie ray vaughan. i wish i was there then.
You can always see from which period Stevie's vids are.But what strucks me that despite being on drugs,he had so much love to give it broke through the drugs, you don't see that often,Its terrible he died, but fortunally clean.STEVIE RULES FOREVER!
Amen. Love for this man always. ❤❤❤❤❤
(2024) 34 years later
Stevie has inspired me totally through my years with his soul and dedication to music, Rest in peace stevie, we love you
He is heaven
S.R.V with his Guitar Charley! that guitar is a sick cutom the lip stick tube pick ups in it our awsome the coolest part of this whole thing is the song he plays in this video is dedicated to the memory of the man who made that awsome guitar
Great video thanks for posting it dbfan

We miss u!!!!

thank you sir!
Again Fantastic!
stunning.
Man...it's like he's making the guitar cry and then just cranks the gain and changes the tone just enough to makes it weep like its soul is being torn apart! Dang I love this performance!!!
Yes, THE BEST EVER!!!
I saw him at the Opera house in Boston, 3/85. He wore a long Hendrix style robe & same hat, but I don't remember there being a keyboardist yet. I saw him 10+ times and that was the best show of all. They closed w 3rd Stone.
One of the most soulful players and singers to have ever graced us.
Stevie is so wasted but still manages to grind it out. I am a recovering alcoholic and this helps me realize I can never go back. Thank you Stevie.
HeavyMental Yes I totally agree and he was a beautiful soul as well.
Some parts of this are painful to watch, but he was such a monumental talent he still pulled it off. He was one of a kind.
Pat Allen he seems to be holding it together pretty well
This is one of my favs from SRV! What a beautiful tribute to a friend that passed and wise words to the livin'!!
SRV!!!!!!!! Thanks for posting. I love Stevie Ray Vaughan. He's my favorite bluesman.
Hard Fact: It is common knowledge that SRV would keep "Crazy Glue" with him to glue the skin back on his left fingers. His fingers were torn-up much of the time from constant playing. The price he paid for being the best!
Stevie be lit, but music never suffered AT ALL! SRV was best ever without a doubt!
"I Hate to tell you this,

STEVIE RAY "KING" VAUGHAN!!!
best guitarist in the world
All this time i didn't even know Stevie Ray. Last year a friend told me to look 4 him on youtube and i was blown away. My 3 favorite guitar players r Jimi Hendrix,Eddie Hazel and now also Stevie Ray Vaughn.May they all r.i.p
people are calling this bad, this is the best performance I have seen of this yet....So much emotion and feeling.
Looking like a virtuoso playing with soul practically patented, he was sleep-deprived, drunk, wasted...stupendous performance under the circumstances and all the more touching. Shades of Guitar Slim.
6:15 ahahah i love him. he keeps the "artist pass" picked on his jeans whe he's playing! xD
lovable man
Wish I had been there!!!! Surely SRV kicked ass that night in Pori Jazz!!!
I was there, one of the greatest day of my life
@soultaker1083

Stevie clean was pure bright light and brilliance. Cant say which I liked better.
@wisesatyr72 so many lightyears beyond hendrix
The best blues jazz guitarrista in the history...rip
the god of the blues
I wish I had been there!!! SRV R.I.P
It's the strings. When you play awhile the coating on the string wears off and the sweat from your figures will cause the strings to rust or oxidize on your fingers. That happens when you play on worn out strings for at least an hour or so.
what a bad ass guitar player he was...I miss him so much.
Me too. Miss him so. (2024)
Wow. Listening stevie, tranquil, drinkin something... Something like a dream... Amazing.
You're mostly right. Stevie was on drugs and alcohol until the end of 86. Then from November of 1986 until August 27, 1990 he was clean and sober
your fingers can get hurt but they dont turn black from being hurt. The black is from the brand new strings rubbing off.
great
did anybody see the facial expression at 4:33, its u can only see it for a split second wen it zooms out from his fingers. thats real blues cuz hes actually feeling it. physically aswell as mentally
ahh man poor stevie, you can tell he is in a state in that video..... still a fookin amazing player despite the circumstances.
it's hard not to favorite like every SRV vid I watch haha :)
Rest in peace stevie, inspired and influenced me a lot! There will never be life without you
the best guitar player ever!!!
@foxgirl38 all his clothing would make a good museum. He had a great sense of style
There was abeer bottle on hs amp, that is what he was referring to.
I read a reaction of someone who said fingers can't be hurt by strings.Maybe it's different with guitars,i'm a bassplayer but i use to play without a pick, and i've played so long and heavy my fingers were bleeding.BTW,I know from Flea (RHCP)he had the same problem with his tumb.Stevie still rules!
man--- he could play, not another one like him, who do you know that could wear hat,s like stevie , he was just great. miss you so much.
If it gets any better than Stevie I have not heard it!
I saw Stevie Ray live five times between 1983 and 1990. Yeah, sure, look it up.
He's listed as one of the most influential hispanic icons.
My mom also knew him and his family growing up in Oak Cliff.
Wow!! He is wasted!! Still plays his heart out....RIP.
this reminds me of bold as love by jimi hendrix
SO missed Sweet ANGEL ♥ You Stevie, Heaven Sure has some Great Blues Players
I love at 6:33 he finds just the right notes he was searching for and just lights up like a kindergardener at Christmas.
sonido ,otis redin , jhimi hendrix, uno de los grandes guitarristas que nos dejo muy pronto ,las nuebas generaciones ,que lo sigan como ejemplo ,de talento y aportacion a la musica del siglo xx,como cutura.un clasico.
SENSATIONAL..RIP Stevie Vaughan
the best version!
han er verdens bedste guitar spiller (he is the world's best guitar player) =)
Hell yeah man, you get that tone going just right and you're in the groove and.....I think I'm gonna go grab my guitar now :D
I'd bet it's graphite powder. He used really heavy string guages (I've heard as heavy as .015s for the high E), so slippery graphite would allow him to move faster with less damage. I got some on my hands from a snap-line a few weeks ago and it looked exactly like that.

@huyiy its probably from the paint of the frets of the guitar ... that happens to me sometimes , but they never got that black haha
Grit and grease. Pure brutal passion.
Those are called conchos, a Vaquero (Spanish-culture Cowboy) affectation, as far as I know they're just for lookin' flash for the Ladies.
They shine in the sun when you're on horseback
(and were generally made of Silver, so you could sell them if you went bust).
Pretty sure whoever dressed Ol' Stevie was doing a little blow herself!
this song is one of my fav, has alot in it.
The one in New Orleans in 1988 is ten times better than that one IMO. Stevie's clean and his playing is just blazing hot
i wouldnt say he was the best EVER. but he was a mighty fine guitarist for deffinate, my favourite, tho there are better
I love this song to death. I just listened to the Afternoon show rendition of this and there is so much more emotion in this one the in that one. Nevertheless, Stevie gave it his all every single night.
Correction, I meant the New Orleans Jazz festval version!I just woke up so my mind has to start up!(as far as it will).
Stevie was LIT!
My roommates cousin saw this particular gig.. I wasn't born in another two years! Damn.
Beautiful as he was.
Actually the day SRV was there was 11-7-85. Remember being there back then, next day i went bought my first guitar. Good times.
best video ever.....
mi viene difficile preferire uno tra srv e hendrix.... io li vedo come un unico artista straordinario che da emozioni come pochi... grandissimi inimitabili.
@huyiy SRV plays with 13 / 56 on his guitar, and concert after concert, he hurts his fingers. Bluesman often use the superglue to strengthen their horn, i think it's something like that in this video.
itll just be the metal residue from the strings, when you play loads and loads it just coats your fingers, especially if they are new strings
although i will agree that he is totally wasted at this point in his career, i still think it is a real good performance. he is so incredibly free and unscripted here, caught up in his own world where nothing but the music matters. his playing may not be crisp or perfect as in other shows, but he sure gives a lot of emotion and unrestricted inner self.
That's right Stevies MUSIC does the talking
His fingers aren't injured...that's what happens to your fingers when you've been playing a while, especially as intense as he's goin at it. Part of it is the rosewood fretboard

el mejor de todos los tiempos el es el mas grande si señor el mas grande

I just love the one-handed stuff
they got out of time for a second and the drummer had to fill to get the time back, thats why stevie was laughin
Seen Him Twice before he Died. Just Lucky I guess!
Seen him in 89 90 He Was Clean!
Thanks for that Skyline!
I met SRV and talked with him several times in Troy Wisc. before he died in the helicopters. That night, we were commenting on how ominous the helicopters looked surrounded by guards in the fog.
Best guitar performance
this must have been close to the time of charley's death, you can see it in stevie's face.
haven't seen this one before. but, i do think it was on this tour in europe when he had a breakdown and entered rehab back in the states.
went through a lot of comments on this video and noticed the John Mayer haters.... I'll agree that SRV is the best guitarist that ever lived, but Mayer is a damn good guitar player. Tear your house apart, find it, post it. Do it for SRV fans everywhere.
