Do you own the Harbor Freight 8" Drill Press? Tell me how you like it!

Hey was wondering if this press would suffice in a gunsmith shop? Is it strong enough for the types of metals and things I would need to drill that have to do with firearms?

I have had one for at least 10 years and the only complaint is raising and lowering the table which is the same for any drill press without a crank.

How well does it drill through steel

I haven't drilled through anything crazy yet, just 1/8" steel. It did fine for me. Good bits, slow speed, and keeping the bit cool does the trick.

Can i drill dowel holes in 2x12's to make tabletops? I am thinking i mas need to turn the base around and bolt it to the workbench and hang the head hang off of the work bench and work with a lower table to rest the work piece on it?

I would say no it wouldn't be able to do that. I'm sure if you got creative you could manage. But I can't suggest doing it any other way than what it was intended for. Need a bigger model or a portable drill press attachment for your drill.

Has your press ever stopped working? I used mine, which is the same one you have, and I think I may have tried to drill a bit too harshly and now the thing won't turn. The light still works but the belt is not moving, meaning I can't get anything done.

Hmm, maybe yours burnt up. I've had mine stop drilling if I use too much pressure but keeps going when I let up.

Thanks for the video Bob. I just bought one and put it together today. It's my first one because I just started woodworking and for 69 bucks, I said what the hell. I have one problem that I hope you can help me with. I tried it with the speed it came (in the middle rings). I tried making a 1" hole with it and it stopped a quarter of the way through. I had to lift up the bit, wait for it to start up again and continued. This happened every time. Then I tried setting it at a higher speed. Same problem. Should I try setting the speed like you have it at the bottom rings? Thank you.

The drill is a little under powered. Were you using a forstner bit? I have to take bites at a time with those..especially on bigger holes. I figured it was to be expected with the machine. It's not something I use everyday so I'm okay with some things taking a little longer.

@@backyardbobwoodworks Thanks for getting back to me. I did put in on the lowest speed and it helped. Drill bits I had no problem with but with the forstner bits, I took it slow. Thanks again.

I bought this press in November of 2019 and from day 1 I've had a major issue with the spindle being wobbly mine will not drill a straight hole for shit! I got it to make wheels for toys. I wished I'd takin it back and had them replace it or refund my money when I had the chance. Now I'm at the point of completely taking it apart to see if the spindle shaft is fqctory bent or just shitty bearings! I cant find my owners manual at yhe moment and wondering how to remove the chuck??? In the mean time I'm going to call and talk to customer service at harbor frieght to find out if they might know of a solution to my problem. When I grab onto the chuck I can move the shaft with an 1/8".

I would say it would be okay. Really at the end of the day it comes down to the quality of your bits. If you're using it day in and day out, you might invest in a better one. As far as here and there, it should be fine.

Is there a set screw in the chuck? I had a screw fall out and I still dobt know where it came from. Still works

Not that I'm aware of...since it's pressed on. Hmm, well as long as it still works that's good.

When are you going to review that band saw behind you?

First, I'd like to thank you for a great video. I really appreciate you giving your time and effort to let everyone know what you think about that tool.
I bought that press a couple of years ago (still have it) and have had a different experience with it than you have. between the runout (wobble) and the difficulty in getting it setup for each use, I found it pretty much unusable. it's just been sitting around doing nothing ever since. I'm now in the market for a better one. Am looking at the WEN 4214t. it's about halfway in price between that one and the name brand units. we'll see how that goes.
Thanks again for your video and for sharing 😊

I have an older 5 speed Central Machinery model like this one I bought several years ago brand new from Harbor Freight. It still works fine for my occasional use of it. My speed range is the same - 620-3100. Mine doesn't have a light which would have been nice to have.

That cheesy plastic depth stop busted the first time I looked at it funny. After it broke into three pieces, I told it a few things about its momma.
After a lot of poking around the internet looking at dozens of replacements, NONE of which would fit, I finally found some dude in Texas who makes and sells a machined (or maybe 3D printed) aluminum part for $35. Installed one on mine and it works just fine.

    I don’t understand… weighs 32lbs but shipping weight is 27.05lbs
And minimum speed is 760 rpm’s but the 1st speed is 620rpms?

    • @backyardbobwoodworks
      @backyardbobwoodworks  2 ปีที่แล้ว

I didn't understand that either. There's probably some reasoning for it but it doesn't stop me from enjoying the machine lol.

Not to be a dick, but I was hoping you would give us a demo so we could hear/see it run. I already read the info on the product page and I feel like that's all this vid covered. Still giving it a thumbs up though, thanks for sharing.

He didn't take that warning label seriously and drilled an extra hole in his head!
