    Hi Bill. Thank you so much for fixing the loco. That was a very interesting video, your commentary and obvious frustration at poor build quality always makes me chuckle. The speedometer is a complete pain in the a**e and I actually accidentally broke it off my A4 Falcon, which I believe was manufactured about the same time, and it makes no difference to it. Falcon has never wobbled like Kingfisher did, just typical it didnt as much on your layout as it did on mine. My track is really straight and level too, so who knows. 🤷‍♂️ Looking forward to seeing her run on my layout again. Ill get a video posted to show the improvement asap. Cheers, John.

    What an absolutely beautiful model that is - best I've seen featured on the channel so far!
    Kingfisher had Scottish links too, even better.

    Another excellent repair. Credit to you for spotting the issue. This A4 looks pretty good, especially in BR blue.
    Great to see the new layout too. Really looking forward to see this finished.

    Another excellent repair, Bill! I wish I lived in the UK as I've got a few models that could use your expert touch! Congrats on the first video on the new layout, even if it's only in VERY early stages of construction, looking forward to the next layout update and the next model you repair!

    What a lovely loco and a good fix. You're going to have some nice long straight runs to film on your new railway. Re the wobble, though, to be honest I've seen greater 'wobble' on the full scale railway :-)

    I really appreciated this video Bill. I have several of these Hornby Pacific chassis Chinese locos and they are a pain to work on they are so fragile! But, they need very careful handling and it pays dividends. Those checks you did and repairs done will help in the future of my stock. Those rods are like putty, chromed plastic would have been stronger! It is surprising how cheap some of these parts are.

    @Bill also first time really I've seen the layout in use, and just like to commend you on how you built the whole base. To be able to get all the foam boards to be level must have taken some effort, the viaduct is a great addition and looking forward to seeing this. Looks like the old Winchester viaduct over the river itchen near me.

    Good work Bill and the new layout is already showing it’s far better at showcasing locos than the old one was even before the scenery has gone down. I was reading an article in an old BRM about lift out sections and they recommended installing a micro switch to cut all the layout power if the lift out piece was not in place. Especially running DC a misrouted turn out could cause a loco to plunge off the edge if the section is out, maybe something to consider.

    • @oobill
      @oobill  ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely something to consider. It will be all too easy to forget and send a loco to it's doom. I always have kill switches for each loop but I may need to devise some sort of warning system if the lift out section isn't there.

    • @OOElectronics
      @OOElectronics ปีที่แล้ว

      @@oobill Perhaps a reed switch on the fixed section with a magnet on the removable. Wire the reed to close a relay to control the power (and/or illuminate a warning light off the relay back (NC) contacts). Microswitches have a tendency to need realigned and can catch on things when, in this case, the section is removed.

    I just wanted to add that your comments regarding the "speedo" should actually refer to the "lubricator drive", when a speedo drive was fitted it was to the other side of the loco. Keep up the good work, thanks.

    It really is frustrating that models are built without any consideration for the ongoing servicing by modellers, theres got to be a better way to deal with pickups on models. Great job again Bill and fantastic explanations as always. Got plans for more on the layout this week?

    I have an N scale Hiawatha that had a wobble out of the box. Simply removing and reinstalling the body stopped the one side rod from hitting the body. I guess it wasn't installed properly.

    Have you ever come across the tyres coming off the driving wheels? It’s happened to my Mallard and I’m searching for ideas for how to fix them on. I’ve thought of wire glue and soldering, but solder could get messy.

    • @dansmodelrailways7886
      @dansmodelrailways7886 ปีที่แล้ว

      You need a new set of wheels for that. The metal used wont accept solder and don’t glue as they wheels are conductive and glue stops the current. When the tyres have come off older wheels they only repair is replacement.

    • @simon.revill
      @simon.revill ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dansmodelrailways7886 Thanks for the advice. It was electrically conductive glue I was thinking of, but I suspect you are right, a replacement wheel set will be the best solution.

    I had a Golden Plover with exactly the same problem, sloppy bearings, bought disassembled as previous owner had given up. Used same cure as you. Sad to see a manufacturer who has used proper bearings since the earliest 9Fs, unlike "cut-out squares in Mazak chassis", fall down on spec/QC. Wobbling axles exacerbate wear on the connecting rod holes. New layout looking great!

    Hi Bill, just so you know Kingfisher isn't a Railroad model, it's a high detail one. It comes from the Hornby Trainpack R2888M 'The Flying Scotsman'. There are two easy ways to spot the difference:
    1) The Railroad A4s have a humped coal load in the tender which is a result of the tooling necessary from back when they had a tender mounted ringfield motor. They had to hump the coal load to make it fit.
    2) Railroad A4s don't have cab doors. |Admittedly the doors come off fairly easily, so they're sometimes missing on secondhand detailed A4s too.
    Like you I do like BR experimental blue locos. I have Golden Eagle rather than Kingfisher in my A4 collection and it's one of my favourites. Looking forward to the next layout update.

    I love the older Hornby A4's. I have 3 tender driven, and all my collection, is DC. Too expensive to convert to DCC, I would rather buy more locomotives.

    BILL.
    I requested some info on your previous upload but you never responded. I know you're busy with your new project but my query was: I am currently using a small tub of synthetic grease that I find is too thick so I would like to know the name of that thinner lube in a tube that you use.
    If anyone else out there can answer my question, please don't be shy in coming forward as it would be very much appreciated.
    Regards,
    Paul. 👍

    • @oobill

      For grease just use ordinary clear silicon grease. Moly grease or PTFE grease are also ok to use.

  • @brickleyyard4966

  • @mikeking2539

    Looking at the amount of detail on this model, it is Not a Hornby Railroad model

    • @oobill
      @oobill  ปีที่แล้ว

      The box it came in had "Railroad" on it but I think this may actually be out of a "Rare Bird" train pack originally. Dunno. Detail or not the build quality is typical of Railroad stuff.

    • @historyotaku
      @historyotaku ปีที่แล้ว

      @@oobill There's a pretty simple way to tell and that's by looking at the coal load. The Railroad A4s still use the shell of the old tender drive A4s which have the high coal load whereas the Railways/ Super Detail A4s have a more scale coal load that sits lower in the tender.
