I know that the basics are important, but once you get them down, the flashy “stuff” gives you a better feel for the weapon, and help you control it better. Well, at least that is how it is for me... I might be weird.
I've been humbled. Been using 3 sect staff for over 20 years, learned from this. Thank you. I honor and thank you. I am 50 now. This self defense device is magnificent to me. Proficiency is key. I was always looking for more input with it. A marine taught me in my early 20's and his teaching was lacking to me. I can't believe I didn't get the semblance of all weapons and never could, as far as hand weapons of defence, see how closely the worked together. Thank you. I made my own and am now practicing like you've shown. I am relearning it! Thank you!
Thank you so much, Coach Li! You are a FANTASTIC and talented Instructor. I've had a 3-sectional staff that I haven't used in years, and your video helped me pick it up again and learn this great form. I hope you post more weapons video tutorials in the future. Best wishes to you always!
Coach Li, Congratulations for you brilliant work. It's really important to share and teavh the knowledge about the KungFu weapons, specially the ones which are not so seen around. I could really learn a lot from your video, and these basics surely will help me to teach my students when they need to learn the three section staff. Greetings from Brazil! Best Regards, Laoshi Thiago.
Thank you for taking the time to make this very informative instructive video. I do love and greatly appreciate your teaching style. Very easy to follow very easy to understand. Your movements are defined well. Thank you. 🙏
Thank you very very very much for this video. It's really hard in my city (and country) to find a school to learn 3 section staff so I try my best in internet. Thank you sooooooo much for sharing this
NiHao Sifu Li. Respectfully, I must admit over youtube, you are the best teacher of Chinese martial arts of the time. I have started taking lessons from your videos. Thank you a lot.
I was skeptical of this video because og the length, but I am teaching my niece this weapon. So I clicked, and am very thankful that coach goes so in depth. Thank you.
Muchas gracias por compartir tan excelente trabajo 👍👍, aunque no entiendo su idioma... Pero se entiende con la demostración de la práctica 👍👍, Dios les bendiga siempre 🙏, saludos cordiales desde Honduras 👍🤝
It's so obvious Master Jing is a people person ... So pleasant to watch. Such fun basic things to begin with in English ...Best weapon in all Martial Arts
This video is a blessing, I've been looking at a lot of videos to learn the sanjiegun, but It's way more effective to have everything gathered in one video, explained by the same person. I hope I'll be able to master it the way you do, so gracefull and fluid. Thank you very much
Oss Sensei. Thank you so much for your help and advice. I really appreciate your job. I wish you peace and happiness under the sky of prosperity. All the best. Your follower from Algeria.
Sifu Li, your instruction is AWESOME!!! I'm in artist development/management in the music business, as well as a martial artist, and I've got to say: your delivery, the way you explain things and the cadence of how you do it, relaxed body language, and even the tone of your voice is EXCELLENT. With VERY LITTLE extra production and maybe a demonstration against another person using a weapon, so that people have a visual on how it will work (as they do when your normally being taught in-person, by the Sifu) or unarmed even, and you could have a hit with your videos. Should you be interested in doing more videos and having someone help market them for you, let me know. Hope I don't sound like I'm trying to tell you how to do your job or how to teach, just thought I would throw some compliments at the excellent job here. Actually came up with an idea for a series martial arts videos, based on some concepts, just watching your inspiring videos . . .
Long chains make a three sectional staffs slow and hard to control. Short chains are faster and easier to control. You don’t have to cut long chains. I use a carabiner to connect the end chain links.
what I've learned from this video is basically the same as what I learned when practicing a balisong. Being that you can really use the weapon however you want as long as you have control and it flows well.
I like the simple explanation along with emphasis on a few specific points. You explain just enough to make it clear and execute the techniques while maintaining control. I also like that you give mention to movement. I like to use the nunchaku and while many like to imitate others and know a few swings, without movement and transition they don't progress and performance lacks without footwork, change of direction or use of their body in controlling and powering the weapon. I learned a few things watching your video. You are very attarctive and skillful.
After 20+ years of mastering it, you can move up the ladder exchanging top and bottom sections with blade spear ends. Now that's a weapon to tremble in fear.
It hurts like hell. I recommend getting a foam covered practice sectional staff to begin. But given that this comment is 2 years old well you've either hurt yourself enough and continued hurt yourself enough and stopped or maybe you've gotten a three-sectional that's covering foam either way best of luck to you.
Bamboo is a neat choice for homemade training staves. In china we usuall go for $6 training staves made out of PVC pipes coaded in foamed plastic. Never start with a steel staff, unless you want to claim your insurance.

Костянтин Оболонський Each section should be the length of a person’s wrist to the armpit. The chain length is standard about 5 inches between the metal anchors

you're telling me that this is the basics?!? NEAT! can't wait to accidentally hit myself while practicing xD
LOL, I recommend training with a for train first for anyone learning. Learn a new weapon in general honestly.
Master the bo staff and the nunchuk before trying to learn this weapon.

I make three sectional staffs out of bamboo. I tie them with shoe laces or para cord. Bamboo is good for swinging, but not so good for hitting.
