Preston was a child prodigy, self-taught and brilliant! He was playing with Cole at the same time John Lennon and Paul McCartney met in Liverpool. Their paths crossed three years later when he was backing Little Richard in Hamburg. Of course, his contribution to the Beatles in 1969 is iconic. An amazing talent.

This one made me cry... knowing what a great but tormented soul Mr. Preston was. He was a true gift to humanity and way underrated (IMHO) and left us way too early.

I play keyboards, saw Billy play at the Watts Drum Festival clean and sober. I was 3 years old watching Nat's show with my folks in Compton. Billy was the man on 88's I listened to a lot. Thrilling seeing him play live for free at the festival near my home in the city. Dude was the baddest keyboard player ever!! Imagine at 11 years old doing the organ like he did...church kids learn early. I love the Hammond B3 and C3 series to this day. Funky organ with a unique sound with the Leslie speakers. Hammond sued Leslie for making it I found out, but it made the organ sound so much richer with the rotating cone design. Poor Hammond was a clock maker before the organ idea came to be. Legendary now...mostly in Black Churches all over town I notice. Thanks for the upload...
Never knew this footage was around and Wow to see the older generation bringing the new and both are very talented. Even more respect for Billy Preston as he was so talented so young. Sad that Nat, Billy and Natalie are now not with us but we do have their music.

@@matrox Well actually, the irony, even among the older generations is that, before he became an iconic singing legend, Nat "King" Cole was a prodigy himself, and a premier, award winning jazz pianist, with the King Cole Trio. His playing style helped forge the beginnings of the "Bebop" style of jazz music. Nat was a technical genius on the piano keyboard. He was also a gifted songwriter, arranger, and composer As the 1950s approached, Nat was encouraged to sing more, and eventually stand up st the microphone to croon love ballads. So, actually, there were two career phases of Mr. Cole. However, his popularity as a balladeer overshadowed his jazz musician background. Even Nat admitted that he missed being exclusive at the piano. With the arrival of new, upcoming piano virtuosos like Oscar Peterson, and Errol Garner on the scene, Nat decided to return to his roots, and record a couple piano albums himself. Despite the urban legend that Nat King Cole never sang, until a drunk club patron demanded that he sing "Sweet Lorraine" is just not true. Nat always sang with the trio, upon occasion. However, he had yet to develop into the vocal powerhouse, and icon that he would become years later. Check it Out! Ciao!!!

Exploring is the name of the game. You could find great music of different decades on iTunes, and make eclectic cd’s if you or a friend have a personal computer. I only have an iPad now. Of course you can listen on you tube as we are here.

Billy was a big deal before the Beatles were, then... He saw the Beatles arrive, he was performing on their last performance. And without him it wouldn't have happened even. He made the music and creation work there.
I'm back looking at this. Today I feel like crying looking at Mr. Cole and especially Billy because he was so young, so sweet and innocent here. This is priceless.
The Beatles were in Hamburg in 1962. This means Billy was only 16 when he met The Beatles. Incredibly young to have left home and go off touring thousands of miles away. But what a player he was. He was very quiet during the Get Back documentary. All he did was play incredible electric piano and smile a lot!
Jackson didn't include enough of Billy in the film, especially on the rooftop. I'm pretty sure he was featured more in Let It Be. (Overall, I did not like the way Get Back was edited.)
This video needs a place in the rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame! Two great performers, Billy Preston was so young, wonderful music from both of them rest in peace❤
My mother loved Nat King Cole. I watch this and I see why. He was a gentleman way beyond his talent. He could give the spotlight to this young man without a second glance. God rest ye merry gentlemen.
Two of my favorite musical artists.I was lucky enough to see Billy play live at Lathrop High School from the front row in Fairbanks Alaska in 1979 and go backstage and chat him up a little. Two supremely talented musicians.

Part of that Chicago connection he had, during the fledgling and developmental stages of his career, that also included Ray Charles and Quincy Jones. Billy had sexual/drug/legal issues (1991 and later) that some say killed his career. I wonder if music industry powers at the time were afraid to be associated with him in fear of backlash if his tendencies became public. So sad, such pure talent.

Saw him in Get Back, when he was recording with The Beatles. He seem to be having a ball, just watching the proceedings and making his contribution. He was an absolute professional at 10!
This is a wonderful find! I never knew Much about Billy Preston until he had a few hits. Whoever was managing him at this young age wasn't doing enough for him. He's obviously immensely talented. RIP, Mr. Preston.

This is a wonderful find! I never knew Much about Billy Preston until he had a few hits. Whoever was managing him at this young age wasn't doing enough for him. He's obviously immensely talented. RIP, Mr. Preston.
