That's the power of Dean's insistance on not rehearsing too much. Rehearsing kills spontenaity, and Dean recognized that spontenaity, including mistakes, gave life to an act.

I'm grateful that she was so fluent in English that there was no hesitation or discomfort on her part, dealing with Dean being unpredictable. The results are hilarious.
I met and interviewed Caterina in SF at the Fairmont Hotel...Her suite in fact....for my radio station KCSM...San Mateo....She was so nice and accomidating to me. As I recall she spoke and sang in several languages...I love seeing this, she was so much fun to talk to...
Eine Künstlerin, die alles singen konnte. Alles.

And inches from Dean who was wildly charismatic, charming and a versed pro. She ran a circle around Dino and nobody was more delighted than he was! I love how they are touching and she is still all powerful.
Somehow she was always with us - she sang with #elvis, #deanmartin, #franksinatra now Catarina the Great has left us forever at 93. What a superstar worldwide, cosmopolitan, fluent in six languages, guitarist, singer and dancer - millions of hits in the fifties, sixties and seventies, grace, greatness and where she performed, the sun shone. 😢
What happened to our world? Its sad, where is all this intelligence gone? The smart and spontaneous self improvisations, the artistic genius and human interactions that spark creativity and originality, where is it? A golden era of performers, more genuine maybe hearts and minds, a current of art and a generation of dreams and hopes connected to human spirit, we have to take lessons again...

I'm one of (presumably) many who saw this on Instagram, was stunned at the talent here, and immediately went to seek out more material since I had never heard of her. The way she carries herself here makes it look absolutely effortless - she almost seems like a Joni Mitchell type. Anyone have any specific recommendations for compilations to get a feel for her best work?
I like the "Sweet Beat" album which has 60s Pop and some Fifties songs. There's a 50s Jazz live album that's probably interesting and a Las Vegas live album that features mainly jazz songs, but I know them only from the discogs listing (which has incredible 836 entries for Caterina Valente).
a truly great entertainer....could dance, play an instrument, sing in all kinds of languages, play and sing at the same time....they do not make them like that. RIP great soul
Caterina Valente was one of the most gifted and professional artists we ever had visiting this country. What a jewel - she could brighten a dark room by just walking into it.....hard, if not impossible to find this kind if sensitivity and ability to play and sing at this level nowadays.
It's hard to be sure how much this was prepared and how much left to chance - mostly the latter, I guess. Dean has the courage and the confidence as a performer to go with the flow. There's no question of hogging the limelight. Dean is in awe of Caterina's singing and playing and happy to be her 'student'. Getting it wrong becomes getting it right. A special moment . . .
For non guitar players, what she's doing isn't easy at all. She's having a full on conversation with abrupt interjections that have no rhythm and is still playing without missing a single note. Simply spectacular

Que fala tanto
e não diz nada
Ou quase nada
Já me utilizei de toda a escala
E no final não sobrou nada
Não deu em nada
E voltei prá minha nota
Como eu volto prá você
Vou cantar com a minha nota
Como eu gosto de você
E quem quer todas as notas
Ré mi fá sol la si dó
Fica sempre sem nenhuma
Fique numa nota só

That's the power of Dean's insistance on not rehearsing too much. Rehearsing kills spontenaity, and Dean recognized that spontenaity, including mistakes, gave life to an act.
Well said and well put ! That's the reason Jackie Gleason didn't like to rehearse either !
I did not know that about him.
@Tournel Henry The context should have established we are talking about comedy in general, but comedy sketches, specifically. Music is a different beast entirely.
Rest in peace, beloved Caterina! This video make you believe, that we lost in her the greatest female and for Sure the most versatile show talent of the century. Incredibly charming!
R.I.P. Caterina have a good rise! Thankyou for so many nice hours you spend for us . Never forget you and your fantastic lifework.
I’ve rewatched this amazing interaction SO MANY TIMES
So funny, beautiful and charming!
Thank you both for the music and the joy you have given!
It's amazing: two people in the same place at the same time thinking about the same things in harmony. That's a human experience. "Muah!" (kiss my fingers)
Only real artists are able to deliver such a light, funny and well-executed presentation like this.
Yep, and look at her effortless playing, fingerstyle with those chord changes. She still has time to sing, flirt and joke around. Quite amazing.
Notice how the guitar has no chord or microphone to it...
@@energyturtle46 So what? In those days they always used boom pole mics about one meter over their heads
This woman is PURE CLASS.
this is my first time seeing her, and she is soo charming
me too!
in the sixtees, seventees and even the eightees, she was a superstar in germany. She had her own TV show and performed in many movies... I growed up with the music of C.V., so thank you Caterina.

My first time too, but I knew the song, when I saw the song's name in English (the original in Portuguese is "Samba de uma nota só", I thought they were going to sing it in English!
She was such a great artist and musician! Rest in perfect Peace, Caterina!

Yes two italians like paolo rossi ;)
Caterina Valente died on September 9th aged 93. R.I.P. to an exceptional talent with an incredible repertoire of songs and musical styles in 11 languages, guitarist, dancer and actress. Rest in peace with the other crooners...
Que achado maravilhoso de quarentena! Sempre me impressiono de ver nossa música brasileira valorizada no exterior.
2 italiani che fanno bossa nova... si... two italians like paolo rossi! :)
This lady was the bomb! She's popping up all over my TH-cam. An all rounder of the highest order.
I'm grateful that she was so fluent in English that there was no hesitation or discomfort on her part, dealing with Dean being unpredictable. The results are hilarious.
He, was as usual, drunk.
hebneh u 6
That may have been a deliberate act.
hebneb - unpredictable - what a nice way to say it!!
Peter Wechsler he didn't drink that much - it was an act!
I don't know how many times I watched this classic video. I stopped counting but keep watching and watching and watching. ❤❤❤
That's what I call a solid show. That talent don't just happen to anyone. Caterina is truly one of a kind.
She sings very well. Her Portuguese is perfect! So nice to hear she and Dean Martin sing together
I met and interviewed Caterina in SF at the Fairmont Hotel...Her suite in fact....for my radio station KCSM...San Mateo....She was so nice and accomidating to me. As I recall she spoke and sang in several languages...I love seeing this, she was so much fun to talk to...
Does she live here in SF?

Gente brasileira é muito simpática e alegre. Amei ver esse vídeo. E gosto muito de Dean Martin.
@@ToddDunning I think she lives in Switzerland now and is 87 now and retired from the stage a few years ago.
@@edsch1483 ela é franco-italiana
This was a masterclass in flirting from both of them. It was rehearsed but the flirting was real and there was definitely a mutual attraction.
The charm is in how unscripted and real this is... lovely!
Yeah, Dean Martin didn't rehearse, because he didn't need to.
He was always funny and entertaining and charming.
Eine Künstlerin, die alles singen konnte. Alles.

Caterina's charisma just jumps off the screen. WOW.
Mike DiMatteo marva
And inches from Dean who was wildly charismatic, charming and a versed pro. She ran a circle around Dino and nobody was more delighted than he was!
I love how they are touching and she is still all powerful.
I love Italian women
This is my absolute favourite!
I can watch this a million times and it makes me laugh and fills my heart each and every time . ❤️❤️
She is an Italian-French multilingual singer, guitarist and dancer. She speaks six languages and sings in eleven. Amazing!!! ❤
There´s something in this video that made my day. Thank you
What happened to our world? Its sad, where is all this intelligence gone? The smart and spontaneous self improvisations, the artistic genius and human interactions that spark creativity and originality, where is it? A golden era of performers, more genuine maybe hearts and minds, a current of art and a generation of dreams and hopes connected to human spirit, we have to take lessons again...
Nothing has been devalued as much as music in recent years
I have just discovered this lovely lady today. To hear that she has already and recently passed makes me sad. Rest in Peace
I love them. Those smiles, jokes and that chemistry 🧪 just lovely
I just cannot live a day without, at least, a piece of this version! 😍
The way they look at each other!!! oh! I need that in my life
Vinícius Dórea living with 😂 joy in your ❤ heart. That's a very good thing.

Her portuguese is really great but you can always feel that italian twist
In her Italian interviews, despite being Italian-born, you can hear a slight French accent.
I’m afraid she’s a french Lady
@@Fred__ she is italian

Not but, but and
a truly great entertainer....could dance, play an instrument, sing in all kinds of languages, play and sing at the same time....they do not make them like that.

A special moment . . .
Ruhe in Frieden
Dean and Caterina had amazing chemistry - in fact Dean had great chemistry with all his female guests that he sang with - he was amazing, incredible!
