    5 tips for interviews
    1. Show your inspiration but not needy.
    2. Be professional but not robots
    3. Avoid being super arrogant, such as "I am the person you are looking for". Be humble and try to fit.
    4. Don't claim you are not a native speaker in advance if you really fit the job well. This can even be an advantage.
    5. Don't overreact and listen to constructive criticism carefully. Leave a door for yourself.

    Hi Stefanie, I would like to share my experience with you as a Non-Native English Speaker. The first time that I had a meeting in a company to talk about redesigning the TCP Network, I was really calm and confident, the conversation started to warm up and suddenly everybody was talking at the same time, exposing ideas and I could not keep track of all of them. It was the same in the next meeting and the next one, and so on. Of course, I can keep track of the different conversations in the same meeting when meetings are in Spanish, but it is impossible for me to do it in English. Maybe I need to improve my English Skills but then we are talking about an IELTS 8.5 or so, which is way too high for me. I think that I am probably a 7.5. So, In a nutshell, I do agree to those who say that not being a native speaker is a disadvantage but I also agree to you when you say that our skills have to be polished. Still, it remains really frustrating because in my case I have several years studying English. Anyway, thank you for all your tips. This video was really helpful to me. Cheers.

    • @SirWolf2018
      @SirWolf2018 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Even if Mark Twain stated that, those traits alone are not enough so it is easy to misinterpret the quote. You can be total confident and pretend you are an expert, and at the same time look utterly stupid (that's called overconfidence usually accompanied by arrogance as well, which is a repelling trait). However, considering noone starts really as an expert at anything because the world is too complex, and there is so much to learn, the basic idea is that if you can manage to study problems and their solutions in time, you should be able to safely overcome any challenges. And eventually, you will get the experience that is needed to become someone who is considered an expert.

    Two extremes: desperate and overconfident.
    The thing about emphasizing being non-native English speakers in an English-teaching institution, it mostly comes from, especially some countries which are adamant on hiring native speakers only.

    I guess the main issue why people mention "I'm not a native speaker" is that there are lots of positions that are only available for native speakers. When I was looking for an online english teaching position and was sending my CV to Chinese schools, I was rejected mostly by the fact that I'm Russian. And in many Asian countries, for instance, not only for online but for offline teaching positions, they expect to see a native english speaker. When I was in China, most of Chinese people wondered how I could teach English language, if I'm from Russia.

    • @Iscoileachme
      @Iscoileachme 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's exactly why you shouldn't mention it, probably. As for China, natives are picky, salaries no matter how high for us, often can't convince them to apply for a position, so they actually frequently end up non hiring native teachers with good grammar/pronunciation yet marketed as natives for clients. I have a friend who's definitely not a native speaker by any means (no linguistics/teaching degree either for that matter) but he's been an English teacher in a few different places there for almost 5 years now. Probably, you know this all first-hand haha, I actually just finished reading your comment. It's all marketing anyways but obviously being a native has nothing to do with the skills required for teaching, not even speaking a language in a 'proper', clean, grammatically correct way lol.

    Oh my gosh I didn’t know that “To whom it may concern” and other professional looking opening statements sound very fake. I thought it’s OK and very pleasing to the eyes of the reader since most people use it and it’s highly suggested by Google. Lol. Anyway, I’m watching a video a day from your channel to get to know you more and the program I signed up for better! If it wouldn’t for the ad that popped out on my facebook, I’ll never have an idea that someone could still help me improve and hone my English skills and that I do more input than output which makes my language journey very imbalanced. Ohh I can’t wait to start my Fluency Breakthrough Challenge! Thank you so much Stefanie! I really admire what you’re doing! PS: Congratulations to you both 👶🏼💕

    Hi!
    I love the way you have talked about being a non-native speaker teacher is not a disadvantage! I think many people have started to "specify" it because several companies nowadays are advertising jobs for "native speakers only", or there are several harmful comments legitimising that non-native English speakers can't speak or teach " proper English". It really warmed my heart to listen to you highlighting the advantages non-native speakers have and why we should see them as advantages and not otherwise.

    There is moral and guidance here, not only teaching. Thank you very much, Stefany. Hey, I am not a native speaker too but who cares if we get each other well and the person on the other side sees me as the right choice. Even though you are not a native speaker, often times native speakers find fun in this communication all because of these little mistakes or funny accents that could make you sound maybe a little weird but charming and entertaining and different. And while they correct you sometimes, it's the fastest way to learn. I was hired for a job despite my imperfection in English but the most important thing is that they understood me and I understood them for the purposes of the job I was applying for and was competent in. I know, I sometimes may sound strange but I have heard from natives: "Hey, how do you pronounce this? It sounds very cool, I can't say it that way" :)

    Yes, I was super needy.
    I feel so sad till this day.
    But thank you, for the advice of thinking how to open my self for another opportunity, to be humble also.
    Thank you, Coach.

    Great video describing the common mistakes to avoid as a job seeker. My only worry is that we end up with candidates on the market who are professionals at applying to jobs and getting shortlisted instead of people who are actually good at their trade.

    Wow, I would love the feedback on my writing what ever it looks like, I never take it personally because I learned a lot from it more than reading from books! I learned even from children’s feedback on my speaking and I have corrected my pronunciation as well. If I didn’t accept any feedback and criticism I would never know the right way as people write and speak in real life. Thanks so much for every single correction. Please go ahead and don’t stop your style of teaching through criticism which we really miss in our life, people stopped correcting each other and leave you to the wind blowing you out. I am always asking people around me please if you see or hear any errors I did, don’t leave me alone, but many times they’ve been ignoring my mistakes which really frustrates me 😂

    I love your English program.! Even though I have not had the time I need to do my homework I always study my lesson when I work out every day.
    I highly recommend the fluency breakthrough challenge, that's so challenging and really improves our speaking.
