Glad I found this. Excellent lesson. My favorite version is from the Isle Of Wight festival in 1970. The cross talk from the venue security fits perfect...
Whats really impressive to me is if you never saw the footage of Hendrix performing this you'd think he was jumping all over the stage being a wild man, but he was soooo cool, so calm, so serene just standing there emitting this loud, mind blowing , greatest guitar performance ever.
Thank you so much for taking the time to put the massive effort into transcribing what is probably the best guitar track ever recorded. I've decided to complicate my life by trying to learn this as its played on Band of Gypsies. Please put up the solo-or at least the first 4-5 minutes of it. I would love to frustrate myself even more! Well done, KDA!
Haha the intro was good. Jimi used to say the same thing before every machine gun version. He was brilliant. To me it's like he was practicing this song until he played it as the band of gypsys where he outperformed himself. This version is by far the most iconic and beautiful song/solo I've ever heard. I was paralyzed, when I heard it for the first time on a vinyl record my father had. It became instantly my favorite song of all time. Gonna learn it finally I guess. Thanks for the tutorial :)
"I won't be teaching you how to go off" haha well said. Yeah the song has structure. Only as far as a groovy ass bass and drum go. It is without a doubt one of his greatests, love how casual and somehow "low key relaxed" it is. Always get the chills listening to this. And greatly appreciate you sharing some ideas and basics for this song!!! Cheers man!
Yes, the Fillmore East Machine Gun was his best guitar performance IMO. So many good licks and fills in this, he "pulled out all the stops". The Isle of Wight version also needs a tutorial, also has some great sections. Nice tone - need to note your settings, and you play the intro so close to the goat. The challenge is to sustain it for the whole 9 minutes.
this is so helpful. I dont know what it is about hendrix but I cant learn his songs off tabs. videos are the only way I can learn them for some reason. Thank you!
"I'd be here for months" hahaha. I'll be on this one for months as it is. very relaxed yet detailed teaching style. love getting all those snarling bends right. thanks man.
“Turn that damn guitar down!” 😉🎸 🫡 I salute you, kind sir. What an amazing talent you have for being able to decipher the legend himself so accurately. Wish Jimi were still around to hear what he’d have to say & play. 😢
I came across a video of Dave Simpson creating the Machine Gun tone for the Boss Katana amp...he nailed it and his playing of the song is phenomenal...never thought I would even attempt the song even though I am a fairly good player. I am glad i found your video. Thank you for taking the time to do record this and putting this out there. I have only watched it to the twelve minute mark but can already tell you have the perfect teaching style. Your video is gonna be the key for me....Thanks again!

Thanks Paul. Yeah, there's not many tutorials for this one. Thought that I would change that. Tackling the actual solo though is another matter. Jimi just goes off for 10 minutes. Would not be easy picking that apart.
@@KellyDeanAllenGuitar Takes a lot of patience, ambition and enthusiasm to teach these lessons especially Hendrix. I took your word for it to listen to the song over and over before playing,,,,been practicing it for a couple weeks now!

Hi Kelly. I'm your latest subscriber/fan Keith from Illinois. Been playing since 1988 and building guitars since '89. I'd like to make a couple observation and ask a couple questions. First I didn't know until now that Steve Martin and Steve Vai had a love child. Two your channel is kick ass and I'd say for you and your community you have created, the sky is the limit. Sorry for the long-winded post and the split infinitive. I found your channel last night looking for an actual lesson on Machine Gun..thus this rabbithole which I am enjoying soooo much!!! Thank you!! Now questione; I know you called that Jackson something else but that thing looks Identical to my JDR-94 Concept Jackson. I got it off a guy in (Jackson County Illinois haha how cool is that...?) along with a 30 watt Crate amp both mint. He'd bought them new in Texas and got intimidated by an instructor so never learned to play. Mine has the original Charvel/Jackson case and it had a thread-in trem arm which I upgraded to a normal modern Floyd socket and arm with male threads and I put on black Sperzels too. Thus I have a spare set of Jackson tuners if you'd like me to send you a set. I love that guitar. I know you don't like all the tapping stuff, but would you consider doing a tutorial on Spanish Fly for posterity, your subscribers and your daughter?? I'm most interested in how you would attack the picking runs and how someone who woodsheds like you do it would accommodate the stretches around the third to eighth frets. Also would love to see a no hold barred tutorial on I'm the One, Atomic Punk, Take your Whiskey Home and or Hot For Teacher. Just putting it out there as I know the brothers and sisters in the crowd and we would eat it up. Plus I'm aware your channel/community is destined to do nothing but grow and prosper. Also I'm wondering what is your opinion of Guy Mann-Dude and if you remember and like Guy's music, would you consider attacking his solo, Sleight of Hand. I've talked to GMD on the phone recently and he is a super cool person. But nobody knows that solo, and Guy doesn't play anymore. Thanks Again!! Keith
I've been slack, sorry. I've got too many things on the go right now. I'm gonna get on it hopefully this week. It's on my to-do list for the next week or so.
Great job, I'd be happy just learning the intro...always wondered what Jimi says at the start about Chicago... dragging scene or drafting scene? Anyway fantastic lesson 🙂 👏
What a great tutorial. Thank you for making the effort to put this out there. Is there a trick to machine gun part so your pick doesn't get hung up on the strings, like using a very thin pick? I can't get anywhere close to the speed without getting hung up.
A soft pick can help to get the muted strum pattern down but using a stiffer pick correctly can really help to achieve the sort of plucky sounding rake this song has. Best of luck!
You can't play this performance by just copy it, you have to listen it undred times understand the feeling there is in this monument. Then maybe if you get the vibe and play it very deep with your heart and soul you can kind of nail it.

I don't think it's the pick. I use fairly heavy picks. It's a light touch.
It helps if you angle your pick slightly. If you angle it too much you won't get a good sound though, so play around with it and find what works
