    It's time to review the Trek Rail 9.9 XX1 AXS in our 2022 Emtb shootout! Trek’s Rail 9.9 is a tech-loaded eMTB with 29” wheels and 160/150mm travel, which offers mannerisms that let it hang with both the Trail and Enduro category bikes without feeling out of place.
    Moving onto some of the useful features on the Trek Rail 9.9, the Smart System-equipped Bosch motor has more mid-range “grunt” than the EP8 systems, giving the feeling of a slightly more powerful motor overall. The smart eMTB mode is impressive for delivering usable grip on loose or slick surfaces, though sometimes dropped the power more than we would have liked. We also found that all the bikes equipped with the Bosch remote had a tendency to change power modes mysteriously while riding. We were either bumping their sensitive buttons without knowing, or the bumpy terrain caused them to shift on their own. Regardless, it happened on all Smart System bikes enough times for it to be a talking point.

    Love the straight forward honest feedback from these shootouts. Especially advice such as buying a lower spec trim to take advantage of previous geo. When is the Levo review dropping? That's one of the ones I'm looking forward to most.

    Bosch and shimano rattle is a pleasure killer. Thats why i bought a levo. Stealthy just like an analog bike. Only thing you hear is tires on the ground. And occasional chain slap. Options last year for me was rail or levo. The geometry of the rail was a tiny bit better. But ended up with levo. Havent regretted it for a second after testing my mates rail. And those who say you dont notice the rattle. I do...

    • @jacob80
      @jacob80 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I disagree - there’s no significant rattle on the gen 4 CX. The Bosch CX is superior to that Levo motor as well. I’ve put my Rail through some serious climbs and terrain and it just keeps going

    • @krusch75
      @krusch75 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jacob80 CX4 is a great system. Excellent power and very efficient. And rattles far less then Shimano EP8. But brose makes zero noise when coasting in rough terrain. Unlike ep8 and cx4.
      But i think bike material, shape and integration could hide it or in worst case enhance the rattle noise. Fo if you dont notice it. Good for you:)

    Really appreciate that you publish the weights on all the bikes. It is astonishing that there is a 10 lb range between the lightest and heaviest bikes on test, and that the heaviest is almost 20 lbs more than the lightweight e-MTBs (Orbea Rise, Specialized Levo SL). It would be very helpful, if possible, to list the range of weights for each model from the lower specs to the top of the line versions that you tested. Wondering if spec/frame changes weight by 1-2 lbs vs 4-5 lbs?

    • @TheLoamWolf
      @TheLoamWolf  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately, we can only provide weights for the bikes we have on test. Many of the manufactures put weights on their bike pages, however, alot of times that is for the size small (unless mentioned otherwise. That said, the weight difference between frame sizes is fairly marginal, at most a quarter pound.

    • @larryokeefe8369
      @larryokeefe8369 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheLoamWolf Thanks for the quick response. Answering my own question, and good on Trek for publishing weights on their website. The 9.7 has a claimed weight of 50.6 lbs, 1 lb more than the 9.9. I know the 9.9 has way fancier components, but you could buy a 9.7 and one of the other bikes on test for the price of the 9.9. With all of that said, I am still holding out for more offerings in the lightweight class, like the Rise.

    Trek seem to have stuffed up the sizing by trying too hard to match the slash. The XL with a 517mm reach in the low setting (even longer in the high) is more like an XXL and the drop down to the size large (reach 487 from memory) is too bigger step. For people stuck in between they either have to compromise up or down and then try and compensate by fiddling with stem length for example. For me at about 191.5cm (6ft3.5” for those still living in the 17th century) I have no choice but go for the XL. Really frustrating. I would like a reach of around 500mm. So my only option is to put on a 35mm stem, which will kind of make it feel like a 507mm reach. But the wheel base will still be like an articulated truck. What a pain. My 9.8xt is still three months away and I am pondering pulling the plug. Sigh 😞

      Dude same exact thing happened with me. I swapped stems down to 32 mm and played with backswept handlebar but you are limited keeping the hands in front of the mid line of the steering tube before the steering gets twitchy and goes to shit. Xl is too big, L was too small they need a L/XL size

      @@AB-NZ How've you been getting along with it?

    • @AB-NZ
      @AB-NZ ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LastAphelion the Levo is amazing. Riding more (obviously) and harder trails than I was able to do on my Ibis Ripmo. Probably because I don’t ride with a lot of finesse and the Levo is better at pointing and shooting. The Ripmo requires more precision to navigate the roots/rocks because it’s so light. But better for flicking off trail features.
      Went for the S5 sizing, which means the Levo is not too long for the technical twisty trails we have where I live. Unfortunately I have been off it for a while due to a bad crash…. Broken rib and pneumothorax. Sigh. I suspect it will take a bit to get my mojo back 🤔😏.
      Have played with the adjustable rear chip thing, but found the lower setting resulted in way too many pedal strikes on rocks and roots. Just slackened out the head angle with the adjustable head set, but not ridden it in anger yet. Will revert back to the stock settings if I don’t like it.
      Cheers for NZ.
