    These models are not necessarily the best example from every company. I don't know all of them but I know Yamaha and Roland have better pianos than the ones in those particular models. Ultimately I could use any of them just fine. Great video. Thanks.

    the Roland VR09 is in a class all it's own here. if you're a classically trained pianist and looking for authentic ivory touch to the key bed, well the precision to the Roland's action cannot be overstated. when I close my eyes I sometimes feel like I'm playing a grand. I actually performed Rachmaninoff's second concerto on the VR09 in Carnegie Hall last summer, and I had people coming up to me afterward asking me where they could buy the keyboard

      For overall sound, flexibility and feel the VR-09 is one of the best stage instruments you can buy. It will go down as one of Roland's best products.

    I always had a bias against Yamaha cause I had a bad simple keyboard, but now I got to admit, Yamaha owns all of them in this one. You should put other brands too like Casio, Kurzweil, Kawai if you can, would be great

    I prefer Steinway a piano,but to me you just can't beat a Yamaha Stage piano. For the professional piano player. Nord,Korg, Roland all have that clank sound when you hit the keys. They're all good, but each has its special sound as far as synthesizers. If you're looking for a good piano sound go with Yamaha Stage pianos you can't go wrong. That's my opinion.

    NORD BY FARRRRRR IS BEST PIANO SOUND, its absolutely beautiful

  • @mdanthony18
    @mdanthony18 9 ปีที่แล้ว +63

    5 - Yamaha had the best sound, it sounds the closest to a real piano. It sounds very warm and full.
    1 - Nord IMO was a very close second, it's slightly more trebly and I guess Yamaha has a more driving low end.
    6 - I had a hard time trying to place the Rolands because I knew they weren't the best but they're definitely not the worst either. This one just slightly surpassed 4 because of it having a slightly warmer sound.
    4 - Again, the Rolands were like one was slightly better than the other.
    3 - The Korgs sounded the worst out of all of them. Too trebly for my taste.
    2 - This one had no full sound whatsoever, way too trebly and digitized.
    Overall, I'm sure all these keyboards have several different tones and features in them that can show off their true sound better than what this video has shown. (Not saying this video wasn't good, it was great.)

    • @jani0077
      @jani0077 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +melissa anthony I own a roland fantom, and its G piano sound is much much better. I don't know how did the player record the sound, but this was too trebly for me.

    • @p3rrypm
      @p3rrypm 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You realize not all pianos sound the same right? Your statement is just flawed based on that one area alone.
      The Roland samples are closer to Steinway and Yamaha samples their own pianos.
      However, in my opinion the Nord and Korg Kronos were easily set apart from the rest of the pack and none of the others would even be in the running if I were purchasing one today (Based solely off this video of course).

  • @JohnManoahStephen
    @JohnManoahStephen 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    It would be great if you could also display the name of the piano you are playing. In that way the comparison would make more sense. For e.g. I'm not sure which Kronos Piano you are playing - The L.Mays German Grand would sound amazing probably better than the Nord, but the one you are playing sounds more like a bright piano.
    But all said, kudos for your effort in giving such a wide mix of piano sounds in a matter of 7 minutes! Much appreciated.

    Let me tell you, this is one of the best keyboard sound tests ever on TH-cam.. It helps so much.. :)
    1-5-4 was my top three choices.. So, Nord Stage-Tyros-VR09 is my preference order.
    And it's official now that (even just with hearing and not knowing it is a Korg,) Korg's are too bright for my taste !

  • @petrus7977

  • @a__-yg7vz
    @a__-yg7vz 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I have the impression you compared a Nord Stage with other 5 'average' pianos. If you pick yamaha's best, roland's best, and so on, you'll have a fair comparison. Or maybe you didn't even choose Grand Piano on others, because it doesn't sound like so.
    The only piano sound which sounds good there is the Nord imo. As the results came out, as nord owner I was relieved x)

    Fantom is rated 'horrible' here by many, but this is obviously ONE of several very different piano samples of the Fantom, to me it sounds like an old upright piano. I guess it's neither the New York Grand nor the Ultimate Piano. Same goes for Kronos: I have heard a much more realistic Kronos piano than this one here. Is it a 'rock piano' version? It is constantly hammering in the fortissimo range! Doesn't do justice to the Kronos (and I'm not a Kronos owner).

    • @nocumento
      @nocumento 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      RRBM i agree. I use Kronos sounds since 2 years and, dispite Korg pianos have always sounded very bright, there are many much rounder piano presets in the library. Anyway i love Nord Stage for many other reasons apart from the (amazing) sounds: weight, weighted keys, dynamics... it sounds almost by itself :)

  • @misterschubert3242
    @misterschubert3242 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I thought they'd mix them up a bit. I honestly thought that #1 was the best sound hands down/ no debate, and that #2 and 3 were the most obviously "fake" digital. Turns out these were both Korgs. I always had a Roland (1st and 2nd keyboards), and was very leery about Yamahas, but a salesman made an interesting pitch--Yamaha is the only one that actually makes the instruments you're hearing (acoustic pianos, guitars, trumpets etc). Touche! I bought a Motif, and it has been my primary ever since. A student learning keyboard asked me about the Korgs (she has one), and I said I wasn't impressed, but I did note that I have several Korg effects processors. Ultimately, it's your own personal preferences, so buy what you like, but when I see virtually every major recording star with a keyboardist playing either a Yamaha, Roland, or the nearly ubiquitous Red Nord now, I've got to wonder if the Korgs and Kurzweils of the world are thinking about "upping" their game a bit. Sure, I see them, too, but not nearly as much as RDs and Fantoms, Motifs and Stage/ Electros.Of course, the REAL people still have their old Rhodes suitcases and even Hammond B3s!

    Use different speakers (even speakers of notepad) to listen to the test pieces, the answer will be varying, IMO. Through a headphone, I perfer them as follows,PIANO 1, heavy bass.PIANO 2, bright, not proper to slow songs.PIANO 3, not so crystal clear.PIANO 4, not as wide as the 3 above, much more reverb in, a little better than PIANO 3.PIANO 5, very special sound.PIANO 6, a little soft and light, not so dynamic.So...5, 1, 4, 2, 3, 6

    Roland VR 09 is roughly 1/3 of the price of a Nord Piano, so it's a bit weird to compare them like this.
    The piano sound of the VR 09 is surprisingly good for it's price, but the keys are very light so it's better suited for organ or synth. It probably differs alot in key velocity levels too.
    If you are looking for a good piano, i wouldn't recommend it. But if you are looking for a very versatile, affordable, lightweight keyboard for gigs, i definetely would

    I definitely liked the first one because of it's warmness and depth. My least favorite is the 6th, sounds cheaper than others. 2nd keyboard is probably sampled from a different kind of piano, so I won't vote it down haphazardly. The rest are good enough to fool me for a real piano.

    as of Sept 2022, the sound I like most is Yamaha CFX (even the US$850 DGX670), and then Kawai SK-EX is quite nice too... I tried it on an ES520. Steinway is a nice sound but it doesn't have that bright and confident feel of CFX. Casio CT-S1 has really good sound, and they say it is a 9 foot German Grand... would that be Steinway? Because sometimes they classify Steinway as American. I think it'd be perfect if we can have CFX, SK-EX, and Steinway sound... or maybe just good action keyboard like Roland FP-30X with PHA-4 or FP-90X with PHA-50, or the Korg D1 with RH3, and then just use the VST to supplement it. If you are rich you can go for Yamaha CLP 745 or 785... for the good keyboard action... but that's like US$3600 all the way to about $6000.... the Roland FP-30X is about US$800, and the FP-10 also has PHA-4 and is about $600....

  • @jacquesmertens3369

    Having played real pianos for 30 years I would choose Korg Kronos, without any doubt. Second place for Nord (if only they would produce them in other colours than red).
    Yamaha sounds cheap and artificial. And Roland VR-09 contains just an ordinary piano sample which has been 'thickened' by cranking the bass up, the usual Roland recipe.

    • @Xelae93
      @Xelae93 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interesting. Could you elaborate on why you think the Yamaha sound is cheap? I have only had a limited time with acoustic pianos so far, but I would definitely like to hear the opinion of someone who have played for many more years than I.

    • @jacquesmertens3369
      @jacquesmertens3369 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The most expensive part of any electronic piano is the fast memory that holds the samples. In the old days pianos usually contained only 1 small piano sample, which was then modified to change the pitch. That didn't sound natural at all. In an acoustic piano you have different types of strings, usually divided in 3 areas. You will also get a very different sound depending on how hard or how fast you strike the key, whether you release it or hold it down, etc. And then there's the interaction between strings, even when they are not struck, the overtones, etc. The more parameters you include, the harder it becomes to mimic the sound. Remember that your piano has to calculate huge amounts of data in real time. This requires ultra fast processors and tonnes of fast memory.
      Yamaha still tend to use smaller samples, and that would be a reason to call them 'cheap'.
      But there's more: Yamaha also seem to have a preference for 'clean', almost 'clinical' sounds, polishing away every 'imperfection', whereas it's exactly those 'imperfections' that make the piano come alive.
      The Yamaha CP1 and CP5 do contain a very large piano sample (although still a lot smaller than the high end Korg pianos) but Yamaha still managed to make those pianos sound dull, which I attribute to the choice they made when creating the samples. They have sampled a Yamaha acoustic piano (what else?), and if I got to choose an acoustic piano Yamaha would not be very high on my list, I would go for Steinway or Kawai instead, depending on whether I want a warm or a clear sound.
      By the way: the Korg Kronos is nothing else but a keybed (RH3, the same you can find in a cheap SP-280), a pc (Intel motherboard with Atom processor), RAM memory, a few buttons, an SSD hard drive and a touch screen. In other words: a very expensive pc. I just wish the operating system and software would be for sale so that you could install it on your pc and connect your existing keyboard via midi.

      Jacques Mertens Excellent feedback! Very in depth and helpful. I am debating between Krog B1 and Yamaha P115 or Krog LP380 and Yamaha YDP-S52. For my child and myself as first piano. Wonder if the low end Krog is still better than Yamaha?

    • @jacquesmertens3369
      @jacquesmertens3369 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      First of all: please excuse me for the error above (which I can't seem to correct anymore): the SP280 does NOT have the RH3 keybed, only the SP250 has it.
      Especially in the low end you'll find that Korg will give you more bang for the buck than any other brand. For a first keyboard the Korg SP250 is unbeatable. It may not look very sophisticated, but the keybed is excellent, and so is the basic piano sound. Unfortunately Korg is no longer producing the SP250 and they have replaced the RH3 keybed with a lesser quality NH keybed in the SP280 model. So, don't go for the SP280. On the positive side: they still have the RH3 in the new upright piano LP380. The LP380 is a very complete model and includes a wooden key cover, which helps to keep the dust out. On the downside: the RH3 provides a rather limited dynamic range. Playing softly is hardly possible. It also has 73 keys instead of 88. I would suggest to try both the Korg LP380 and the Yamaha YDP-S52. The dynamic range might be better on the YDP-S52, haven't tried it yet.
      If you can still get hold of the "old" Korg SP-250BK at around 500-600 USD, go for it! If you can't: both the LP380 and the YDP-S52 will do nicely.

      "The most expensive part of any electronic piano is the fast memory that holds the samples"
      That would be true 30 years ago. The Nord Pinano 3 has 1GB (1 Gigabytes, which is 1024x1024x1024 characters in storage). 1GB costs at most $20.
      So, basically they charge people an arm and a leg for cheap electronics.
      The most expensive parts (electronically) in digital music instruments are:1) the DACs (the Digital-to-Analog Converters that convert digital to analog wave forms, like MP3 files into music to your ears). Hopefully they use DACs with at least 12-bit resolution. 2) the speakers themselves. 3) any sort of display. 4) the materials of the body, e.g., excellent wood?
      Save money and buy a REAL piano folks (nice high-end ones)! Don't buy electronics junks! NO APPRECIATION in value.

    1.) Yamaha TYOROS4 - Most natural, just a half point off on the low end
    2.) Nordstage2 - Most expressive, but sounds less natural than Yamaha
    3.) Roland VR-09 - Subdued, but good on the low end. Slightly less natural
    4.) Roland Fantom G8 - Clarity is good. Middle of the pack as far as natural sound
    5.) Korg PA-900 - It's a Korg, didn't expect much in terms of piano, pretty flat
    6.) Korg KronosX - The only thing I good I could say is that it emphasizes the highs well
    I'm still very surprised that the Yamaha won. The people aren't wrong. The Nordstage 2 would sound good on stage for it's high character, but I would never use it for my studio recording. You could really tell that's not a natural piano Sound.
