As a former commander on a dutch Leo 2A4 I was petrified seeing the behaviour of the loader. Seeing the reactions I am not the only one...
Where does the 120mm aluminum shell go? I can see the sabot sleeve drop into the basket, but where is the 120mm shell casing?
@@Ares-nt9bu Hi, the shell casing of a 120 mm shell consists of a kind of cardbord that burns completely when fired. Only thing that is left is de bottom part that contains the ignition. It makes it a bit lighter. The downside is, that when you have fired a couple rounds and the loader has already put a new shell in the breach and wants to pull it out again, it can tear off. Happend to my loader once :)
I'm just a random civilian who thought I overreacted until I saw this comment. Like watching a way too energised child using a kitchen knife and cutting board.
@@JohnGordijn woah thats interesting. What was the loader pressing on those buttons at the top after he loaded it. he switched a bunch of switches and pressed some buttons.
@@SandorSoptei Its a serie of buttons and a turning knob. With the buttons you select the correct ammo kind (in my days KE for kenetic or HE for heat), a safe button (if I remember correct) and a turning knob to determine the angle of the gun when the loader can load another round. So when the breach is ready to receive a round, the loader puts for example a Heat round in the breach and pushes the HE button. As soon as he doen this, the gun can be fired. The selection is used by the targeting computer to calculate the correct angle etc.

Clearly, the Loader has never ben hit by the recoil of the cannon due to an eager gunner.
Sticking your hands into the basket with an armed gun is really a gamble.. ask me how I know :-D

FYI that black thing on the roof in front of the loaders head its a computer...the cannon cant fire until the loader presses the "FEUER/FIRE" button, which makes the cannon go back to the aiming position. So, the loader pretty much controls when the cannon gets to fire!
watched 30 seconds and as a ex loader of a 2A4/2A5 i was horified within 10 seconds.. NEVER hold any bodypart above the main gun.. his arm could have been crushed from the 10 second footage

As a loader once you say rdy (or in the US UP!!!) You never put your body parts within the working area of the breach. God lord that was cringe worthy 🙈. Unless... It was a video made for training on what not to do as a loader....

Before I saw the Canadian flag I could probably thought of any European countries Army on this video because of wide range of Leopard 2 users there.
My first thoughts too were Finnish Armed Forces, given their uniforms similarity. It wasnt up until they started issuing commands that i thought "Ah, Canadians".
I thought German because that were they were made, but then I heard English

There are many accents. The loader is francophone.
I would describe the typical Cdn accent similar to the mid-western Merican aka game show host "accent", but Quebec and some of the Maritimes have an unique accent, as well ;) Never heard Danes speaking English ;)

@@ashtonfitzgerald1445 Yes in Germany you get trained to be a loader aswell as a gunner too. This guy called the gun was loaded and pressed "Ready"... Then reaching his hand behind the breach.... You do this mistake once since the breach will deliver over 15 million joules of kinetic energy right into your hand when firing. That's a huge mistake there. Greetings from German ex loader and gunne ;)

Canadian CAPAT or (Canadian disruptive pattern) Isn't just green, we have desert CADPAT, Multicam CADPAT. Really depends on where you're going.

Man I hope that guy still has his hands. Putting your arm in the basket to clear some casings after pressing the ready button is bad news, I hope the commander told him about that afterwards. He's lucky it wasn't one of the more "rapid fire" gun exercises where they stress test the crews.
2:50- did he say "sabot ready" and then lean into the breach area? Having worked around heavy industrial machines, that made the hair stand up on my neck.

@@ianian8572 Not much.. PKM, BMP1/2.. 122 H 63 and some small amount of misc junk..igla, strela = RIP.. replaced by stingers, blah blah.. mostly western junk now.. I was in 155 K 83 crew back in 93-94 (Finnish made junk), my old unit was discontinued in 1998. 😂🤣

I feel like this loader is really risking it with his arm near the cannon like that. I've heard about people getting injured because their arm was close enough to the cannon when it would fire. 😮
Only if they depress the gun, but its a controlled environment where there is no need to depress the gun as much, I would guess. If they were practicing behind a berm, then yeah.. very bad idea.

Always wondered, is it possible to lose a hand shoving the round into the breech like that? It sure looks like it closes up quickly.

Certainly could take a finger off if you're careless enough, but it looks rounded so I'd imagine it wouldn't be terrible, just a bad experience if you didn't get away in time. Treat it with respect, I would say.

@@bootstrap3226 If you ball a fist, you would be pretty much fine. If the gun breech closes, it pushes your fist out of the breech. That's why there is also a rounding/curving wich remains open a bit, giving enough space for your Fist, to not get crushed.
When loading a round, you stick the nose end of the shell into the breach, then place your fist on the back end of the round to shove it the rest of the way in. The closing breach then pushes your fist up and clear with no risk of injury.

NATO tanks like the Leopard 2 and Abrams have much more space for the crew than Soviet tanks like the T-64, T-72, T-80, and T-90. Then again they also have more crew they have to fit in there than their Soviet counterparts as well (4-man crew vs 3-man crew).

@@jaguar2594 Yeah that was unfortunate. That started because of an agreement made in 2013 between the Chinese and the previous Conservative government under Harper. I have no idea what led to the agreement. The bilateral military observations, not training, only ended very recently when diplomatic tensions started rising between the two nations.

The camo isn't correct for Germany either; they're wearing CADPAT camo instead of Flecktarn.
I noticed that loader liked to hold onto the rim of the hatch a lot, I wonder what he does when they have to close it? Also a bit odd that he was wearing an infantry helmet instead of a tanker's helmet.
There's no specific "tanker's" helmet in Canada. Armored crewman use the same standard helmet.

I feel like the compartment is smaller than that of the Abrams, at least width wise. The Leopard looks like they have more standing room. Maybe just the camera angle/lens
Width wise they're virtually the same, but you're right about the height difference. The loader area has more breathing room.
What are the shell casings made from? They aren't ejected with the base and primer. Anyone??
Most of the case is made out of combustible material (that s why storage standards for these shells are higher), so it goes away during a shot from the canon. The only thing that's ejected is the metal cap on the bottom of the shell. It looks like a huge pin.

Hi! I have a question for the experts. Is it practiced to reload the gun while driving? If so, does the rate of fire decrease significantly when driving over rough terrain?
Yes. The tank can fire on the move and loaders have to load on the move. The L2A4 has the capability to engage moving targets whilst also on the move. There is a button on the gunners control.
We used to train different scenarios but the top loaders should reload in 4-8 secs on stationary and realistically adjust a few secs whilst on the move.

I think only tank able to reload and fire in any condition is the LECLERC about 10 rounds/min because evething is 100% automated, no loader. Think it is the only one ( + fantomatic T14)
@@frednoname3714 Many tanks use autoloaders. For example, T64, T72, T80, and T90 are all autoloading soviet/russian tanks. The Japanese type 10 tank also uses an autoloader. The American Stryker MGS mobile gun system used an autoloader. Soviet/Russian BMP-1, BMD-1, BMP-3 and BMD-4 infantry fighting vehicles use autoloaders. Many other vehicles also use autoloaders.

How good is ventilation in our tank? I heard that lots of US personell got cancer due to fumes of big guns like gunship gunners or tank gunners working with DU ammo.
Never thought this coax mg needs to be reloaded. Always thought they have some sort of unlimited ammo cheat thing

I know that gun breach doesn't have spring powered mechanism or it does idk I'm not expert but I know that "leo finger" would suck a lot if it was real thing
THe Leopard series tanks have a system on them that disconnects the main gun from the gunner sight and returns the gun to a 'loading position' to make it easier for the loader to..well, load. Id have to guess its along the roof of the tank, that little panel the loader keeps fiddling with throughout the video.

What makes it even worse is that German tankers have a tradition dating back to WW2 to not wear helmets. Imagine bouncing around in there only with a beret or a screen cap on your head.
It is some silly honor thing.
They have this dumb saying which roughly translates to: "If a German tanker needs a helmet, there will be enough laying around on the ground to pick one up."
That’s why uk tanks have a loaders safety guard which forms part of the firing circuit. The gun can’t be fired unless the guard is in position

This loader isn't being very safe. In combat as soon as he's loaded the round and punched in the ammo type on the computer above, he would be hugging the wall. Behind the breech the recoil will hit you, and above the breech if the gun aims down it can crush you as it tilts up.

Funnily enough the 2A4 is actually one of the less comfortable variants of the leopard. The new A7V has greatly improved the experience of sitting in a 62 ton war machine and it even has AC for the crew

Am i correct to say that there is a safety shield between the loader and breech and it was not pulled back after reloading. Very dangerous wasnt it.

@@Muhammad-uu3nu The loader has to push the Ready switch to release for firing which - at least by the Standard Procedures of the German Army on - he does not directly after loading but only when the gunner or commander reports on target ready to fire.
I have been a tank officer on the Leopard 1 and 2 A4/5/6. In 20 years of service I couldn't remember a single accident of a gunner with the breach

Each can be around 25-30 kg

Think I notice about western tanks to Russian tanks is that when the Russian tanks fire all the smoke goes into the cabin in with western tanks there’s very little smoke whether they have the hatches opener or not
The Leopard tank has a automated smoke absorber - the knob on the barrel. The fired shot fills the knob with pressure and after the shot the pressure is realeased to the front of the barrel.
What the hell are you talking about, no modern tank has smoke flushing back into the cabin. Go look at some of the Russian yearly tank competitions and you'll clearly see the system pushing the powder smoke out the front. You are reading far too much propaganda.
Still the best tank about in my opinion 👊
They have never been in tank on tank battle like the Abrams, so we can't ever truly make that statement

If you think those Canadian sounds weird, Commander is most likely from Alberta and the Loader from Québec or New Brunswick so they both have fucked up accents. I would say the loader is more likely to be from Québec since he messed up estimé and estimated. Close enough words and any Canadian would understand but it seems like he was looking at the commander for a little help so he could correct him.

That's normal for Leos. I was a Leo loader/commander in the early/mid 90's.
There are more buttons now than the Leo 1 (just had a "Loaded" and "Safe" button) but they all have a reason.
And he has enough to do making sure the weapons are looked after. I never poked my head out of the hatch when we were shooting.

Also, in what way to many buttons.
You have 1 button per ammo type, that is available in the fire computer and the ready button.
So if you always load the same ammo type, you only push ready after loading.
If you change the amo type, you push the new ammo type and ready.
@@Mr79dream The ammo select buttons were on the gunner's panel in front of him, not the loader. The loader had one button to press after he loaded the gun. And he would never be looking out the episcope to watch anything, way too much going on to look around.

Room for errors, after all, the loader knows best what he actually loaded in.
As far I remember, the select ammo butto has only to be pressed, if the ammo changed.
So if you go from sabot to sabot or from heat to heat, you have to press only one button.
