Milwaukee M18 Surge: The best slow speed impact driver ever!

  • The hydraulic impact actuation of the Milwaukee M18 Surge is amazing. I use it all the time for small, gentle jobs even though it could probably yank off lug nuts. The ability of the Surge to provide a nearly imperceptible impact action on fasteners makes the Surge the perfect power tool for fragile jobs.

I have seen a lot of impact driver demos on the tubes, but with out a doubt, that was the best. It was like watching in slow motion the hammer action. Great video Doc !

Thanks Dragon. Like a lot of things (flashlights, speakers, saws, etc.) it is easy to focus on the loudest or brightest aspects over the more subtile and precise control the tool is capable of. I use my Surge for 90% slow intricate tasks. But one often needs to be shown where the strengths are given that the box doesn't not highlight all the features that are near zero as in impacts and revolutions per minute.

sound reduction is an understatement. when I started using mine, I didnt realise it was impacting till the fastener was already sunk in. my new go to.

Best comparison explanation I’ve seen so far - surge has the smoothness of a drill & electric screwdriver to start, then quieter than a hex driver when it impacts. Best of both worlds. I decided to skip the hex entirely and just get the surge.

Great explanation instead of keying in on the volume difference that most reviews tend to hone in on. Sinking a fastener through sheet metal to wood or metal to metal is a pain in the behind. I can see this being very helpful.

The M12 Surge is a go-to for a lot of HVAC techs. This surge technology really shines in sheet metal or plastic mini split plastics were you don't want to over drive and strip threads out. I almost never take my M12 off setting 1 and 2. Self tap mode is also great. Only twice have I ran into something past its limits; large lag screws with no pilot hole and 3/4" rusted bolts on a rooftop condenser stand. For space sake I use either the CP3.0 or HO2.5. I keep my XC6.0/HO5.0 in my Rover light but that kinda serves as an emergency battery if i forget to charge the impact battery. Anyway, great tool for certain trades and situations.

You have to get the m12 surge! I used to carry both the m12 fuel standard impact and the m12 brushed screw driver. The impact was for most jobs but i always found myself when doing door knobs or electrical work i would have the screwdriver to be more delicate. But then I had to do a job at a massage parlor where noise would be an issue ,so I figured It was the perfect excuse to buy a new drill ,so I got the 12 surge. It has become my goto for everything. Even had to get my dad one. I cannot believe more people don’t discuss how smooth it is ,they only seem to talk about the noise level. I can count the number of screws I have stripped on one hand since I’ve got it

I think folks get so caught up on specs that it's easy to overlook the potential of one of these. I recently picked up an M12 Surge to try it out and WOW!! This demo of yours shows exactly what I've found hard to describe about it. It's more than just quiet. The amount of control it affords for screws, bolts, whatever is just crazy. I work on flight simulators, the big ones and the little ones. There are many, many machine screws of varying qualities. I took my personal Surge into work, and we now have 2 in the shop. As well as 2 coworkers bought one. It has that factor to it of 'getting it' I think. And once you "get it" I don't think anyone could deny how useful, and simply amazing of a tool it really is. So much more than just another impact driver. Thanks!

I understand what you mean by the control of a less powerful tool. I bought a 12V Bosch impact about 12 years ago. One of their first models. It's slow, and it's great for the applications mentioned in the video. There are times when my Makita impact is too powerful. That's where the older Bosch comes in, too.

Finally a video that shows the surge’s true potential compared to the others that are just about how well driving on highest setting and comparing noises.
That’s one thing I noticed with the regular M12 impact, there was barely any drive control on the slowest setting that I tend to lean more towards the m12 drill. This video just made me want it even more now. Hopefully it will go on sale this coming holiday!

    • @lastbesttool
      @lastbesttool  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I've found as a DIYer that while I do have the rare project where I need to drive hundreds of screws, mostly it is the precise placement of one or a few screws or nuts. The Surge can do it all and while the traditional impacts have some better specs, the Surge just does everything well including those skills that the somewhat crude mechanism of the metal on metal impacts can only dream of.

I keep both standard and surge in my bag, anything indoors I'm reaching for the surge, outdoor heavier lifting I leave to the standard, but I have tested it early on with huge 10" lags that were buried in a milled log home window frames to prevent settling, it cranked them out just as well as the standard gen3 impact just a little less violently and at half the sound and vibration, it's a great option to have in your quiver.

Unless your driving things like lag bolts, this will be quite nice. For the work I do, I'm never driving anything bigger than like a 3in deck screw, works great for that. Sometimes I'll have to remove larger fasteners (removing old equipment) and so far it's done that effortlessly too.

I don't understand, doesn't the non-surge normal impact have speed control using the trigger ?
I've bought a Stanley set of tools (same as Craftsman as far as I know) and they work like a charm. Speed control on the trigger, insane amounts of torque (higher than the competition for the price), really good ergonomics, etc.
The ONLY downside, is that the range isn't as large as Milwaukee or DeWalt but still, big enough.

The standard Milwaukee impacts are garbage. All they do well is drive lags. They take much too long to begin hammering and have too much rpm even on lower settings. The Makita is vastly superior, however the M12 surge I just picked up is wonderful for what I do daily (commercial electrician) thanks for the review! Might have to add a M18 surge for home use.
I'm not a Milwaukee hater by any means, I use their power tools exclusively but the impacts leave much to be desired. Surge is where it's at 👍

Just purchased one just for driving sheet metal screws building horse shades in AZ. figured it would be perfect since it has a setting for just that. it works ok but compared to my old milwakee drilll its not worth it. It continually stops when im driving thru multiple sheets and seems to overthink at times shutting it down before i get a hole tapped. not hating on it because i will keep using it. but for all the hype its a dud. glad it works for you. good vid

It works f.r me on the slow precise jobs. Last time I was punching screws through metal roofing I used with reckless abandon both a corded dewalt and my m18 milwaukee hammer drill. Yes, I did strip a few screws, but out of the hundreds of screws over many sheets of roofing, I was more worried about falling or getting struck by lightening then stripping a gasket screw. Plus I threw a metal cutting blade on my old Craftsman corded circular saw and blasting through thin steel sheets faster than was safe.

I know this is 5 months later but to answer your question. The last setting is for self tapping screws it stops the driver immediately when they get tight so you don’t strip out the metal. It’s fantastic for hvac and other sheet metal applications.

I tried to use my brand new one to drive a bolt with a socket on day 1 (speed 3) and it COMPLETELY FAILED. Then my m12 impact destroyed those bolts/nuts. Ima keep it tho for certain jobs and get the gen 4 m18 non surge for big boy jobs
