Awesome. My wife's uncle teaches shorinji kempo in japan. If we live there. Would love to learn this from him with my son.

    間合いが素晴らしいと思いました。上手いと言われる学生さんの演武でも間合いが近すぎると感じる事が自分は多く・・

Dedicate yourself and find out. An martial art is capable when you dedicate yourself to the art

Many styles and methods of martial arts are applicable if you train seriously, but part of that training has to be pressure-testing your skills. That means you need to spar with a fully resisting opponent. There are many reasons to take up martial arts, all of which are equally worthwhile. Some do it for exercise, others to compete, still more in order to discipline themselves, or even a mix of many reasons.
However, if yours is to learn to fight for your life and/or to protect the lives of others, then you must temper yourself mentally and physically, and sharpen your skills like the edge of a well-honed blade. I hope that this comment helps you in whatever you decide to do in whichever style(s) or method(s) of martial arts you choose to practice.

It depends what you mean. A shorinji kempo master will certainly be better off in a fight than someone who is untrained. But is it effective as a fighting style? Well, how many shorinji kempo masters have won UFC? Beallator? ACB? FNG? ONE? RIzin FF? Invicta? etc.
If you consider applicable to mean "competitive", then the answer is no. But if you are doing nothing now, and you take up shorinji kempo, you will definitely be better than you were.

It has some use but it's definitely not the best way to go if your objective is self defence.
