I decided to take the scenic route home from Rugby one year. I drove through Sneedville on a Saturday evening about supper time. There was a spirit about it, like the wild west. Some of the people (Melungeons) reminded me of the Cajuns in Louisiana. Just the atmosphere, that was over twenty years ago.

I Lived in Sneedville back in 74 and worked at Norris Homes in Bean Station. My God how this town has changed...... I can tell you some stories about the Jail House as I got to visit it a couple days and it is changed beyond recognition . It was the Sheriff's house and you came down and ate Breakfast & Dinner with them at the same table. The small room up stairs was a cell but it was like living at home and the door wasn't locked ,it was for light core dudes that they liked ,like me. Now the Cage was a different story, that was for hard core and they had a boy in there when I got to visit and I didn't know who he was or what he did but my friend Denny the Deputy Sheriff said to stay away from him he was a bad dude and that's another story ,a sad one. Denny even set me up with a TV for the 2 nights I was there, so much more to this one story and I can tell you about the Court House and the Judge also. That man was the Peoples Judge and not a Better man could have been found for that town........Wow ,the things a fellow will do for Love ,and I still do Bren.............

The Melungeons were supposedly an American Indian/Spanish or Portuguese/Mediterranean Jewish mix. My maternal grandmother's maternal grandmother was from the Cherokee Reservation in North Carolina. Some of the women on my mom's and stepdad's sides were tall, lanky, olive skinned, and tanned dark. Others were small, had pretty legs, but were strong and worked hard. They all had heads full of beautiful, thick, dark, curly, or wavy hair.

      @chuckseminski 21 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

When Spain gave up their holdings to the British, there were supposedly several outposts with soldiers along the Temnessee and Cumberland Rivers. These Spaniards may have remained with Indian wives instead of leaving.

Most of my family came from Sneedville and my parents are buried there. I've noticed something about Sneedville women. If a man marries a Sneedville girl, he'd better be prepared to live in Sneedville because Sneedville women don't want to live anywhere else but Sneedville. My Mom's best friend cried every day until her husband agreed to move back to Sneedville. My aunt and Mom also returned to Sneedville to live.

Enjoyed this video, My dad was born in Sneedville, but grew up in Claiborne County. We moved from there before I started school because at that time Tennessee didn't have a kindergartenA nd my mother wanted us to have a better education. But both my parents are fromThat area of Appalachia.I am Melungeon by history and DNA.HoweverIt was never to be mentioned. My grandmotherW\ent to the point of hiding And later destroying the pictures of ethnic looking relatives and ancestors tro prevent people from knowing..Melugeons were discriminated against So you wanted to hide if you were oneIf you could.. They mentioned Morristown in the video ro ne is one of the good places to go eat , The ancestors on both side of the family Came there After the revolutionary ward just like they mentioned in the video, because the war veterans were given land grants there . It is an economically depressed area with very much misunderstood people, to mention you come from thereYou're automatically thought to be slow and stupid. video made me want to jump in my car and go there.

I live in Sneedville. We like the name of our school teams, the "Indians." Folks here don't give a rat's backside about "politically correct." We DO care about our traditions, and aren't going to let self important, bleeding heart, misguided, busy body outsiders tell us how to live. That may be part of why more than half of the outsiders who move here end up leaving after a few years, they just don't fit in.

When you first headed out of town and hit the intersection with 66, I thought "don't go left, Shane..."
Sure enough, you did - but then the "big edit" occurred. :-)
That stretch of 66, that passes by Pressmans Home on the way eventually to Rogersville, is quite....
"Deliverance-y". Also curvy as heck - so much so that you can see your own arse in places. :-)
From our vantage point over here in Hawkins Co. on the side of the ridge, we face pretty much
right at Sneedville, which gets typically rougher weather since they're on that side of the big ridge.
We're high enough up over here to see what weather is hitting them and therefore, what we can
expect within an hour or so over here.
Claiborne and Hancock counties are two of the most economically depressed areas of the state,
sadly. There used to be considerably more industry over there but not much these days, short of
the horse trailer manufacturer out Back Valley and the like.
The area is just too remotely located and in these times, access to major arteries is everything.
Still, Kyles Ford to the east and Tazewell/New Tazewell to the west make Sneedville a stop on
quite a tour if anyone is wondering.
Y'all be safe out there *honey* . :-)

I remember as a child walking on the street to the grocery store with my family and seeing the prisoners standing at the barred windows with their arms hanging out and yelling and talking to people Yes that jailhouse is haunted. I was born and raised in Sneedville TN at the old (it was torn down but the basement section is still there) Hancock County Hospital. Some think it’s haunted and have recorded voices from inside. There’s YT footage.. Anyway, Melungeon was only a term, not a race. There’s a lot of history behind the name. I never heard of Melungeon while I lived there until later on. I wrote a book that details bits and pieces but very interesting indeed. Great video. Love my hometown. We are moving back soon…
