      The owner is correct. Actually a GTO had a little bit more trim and better options you could get over what the Judge sticker package had. A Judge is easy to clone. There's nothing in the VIN which signifies it as being anything special. They cranked out the Judge to try to compete better with the Roadrunner.

    What a beauty. What I love most about cars of this era is that it was possible to equip the car to every desire. You didn’t see 10 that looked identical on your way to work every day. Choices in powertrains were a luxury that we don’t have today.

    Back in the day, the ram air IV was more of a race engine, needed 3.91 or lower gears to keep it going strong. Add headers, some super tuning and your talking 12 second GTO. Of course with rear tires that can hook up. 😊

    1970 Ram Air IV GTO engine used a different Armasteel crankshaft with stronger connecting rods and forged pistons. The Block was a 4 bolt main.
    The Camshaft had 308 intake and 320 degrees exhaust duration. 87 degrees overlap with .527 inch lift. The lift was obtained by using 1.65 Rocker Arms. The camshaft is known as the 041 or T-Camshaft . The Ram Air IV engine used stronger push rods, swirl polished intake and exhaust valves that were tulipped for better flow to the combustion chamber. The Ram Air IV valve springs were also stronger and rated at 320 lbs of pressure . This allowed the Ram Air IV to achieve 6500 and above RPMS with no valve float. The Ram Air IV also used special HL-64 lifters. GM part number 5232675. Extremely rare today. The lifters above 3000 rpm acted like solid lifters that again allowed RPMs to 6500. No other GTO engine ever had this ability.
    The 1970 Ram Air IV Round Port heads were the best performance heads according to Pete McCarthy's book . The 1970 head is stamped 614. The Exhaust manifolds were also Round port and removed the exhaust gases with a header like design. The intake manifold was aluminum with a separate cast iron crossover. The cast iron crossover kept the hot exhaust gases from heating the intake and this alone added 10 extra horsepower and saved 20 pounds in weight over the stock GTO cast iron intake. The intake also used a higher profile to better streamline the air fuel mixture to the combustion chamber. Ram Air IV engines also used a special set of guide plates to accommodate the wider push rods. Ram Air IV engines also used special oil dripper's to keep oil on the rocker arm assembly at high rpms. The Rochester carburetor was also designed to flow 800 CFM.
    That's cubic feet per minute. The engine also used a different distributor that was calibrated for higher rpm's. It is very common for Ram Air IV engines to produce 440 Horsepower in stock configuration. With a good blueprint and port matched heads the Ram Air IV engine can produce 480 Horsepower using the stock exhaust manifolds. Install headers and a Hot MSD ignition and you can achieve 500 Horsepower with a blueprinted engine This is why you see many of the Ram Air IVs equaling or surpassing LS6 and Hemi powered cars from the same era at the Pure stock drags. Ram Air IV GTOs used a stock 3.90 gear with a 4.33 as optional. Air conditioning was not available with the Ram Air IV engine. Now you know why. My 1970 Ram Air IV GTO is also on TH-cam. Car can run low 12s with street tires. No headers with the 4.33 gears. Milt Schornack ran 11.87 with his 1970 Ram Air IV automatic Judge. That's 8\10ths from a 10 second car with 400 cubic inches.
    Roger Wydler
    Here's a 400 cubic inch 1969 Ram Air IV beating a dual quad 426 Hemi with 4.10 gears!

    Really nice brand new looking Pontiac! The judge stripes look great on this. Big amen to that HP!! I'm thinking the ram air IV is what gives this a more powerful sound... as I understand it, the ram air III is typically smoother idling, more luxury car, more streetable... bit less power. If that's accurate, maybe that's part of the difference between the ram III, and the ram IV? I liked the vid, nice! Thank you!

    • @jeremythompson9122

      The Ram Air IV was definitely intended more for racers. The Ram Air III was a more docile street engine. I love the sound of the RAIV idling. For having a hydraulic camshaft they had an incredible sound

    • @insulman100
      @insulman100 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jeremythompson9122 the RA IV CAM was the first cam designed with CAD it was first used in the 1968 RA IIs the 68 engine had the round port heads with smaller intake runner than the 69 70 RA IVs also the RA IIs used 1.5 to 1 rocker arms while the IVs used 1.65 to 1 rockers pushing the valve lift past .500 at the time this cam was the biggest ever installed in a factory engine. BTW the RA II,IV grind was used in the RAV but of course with different lobe locations due to the RA Vs tunnel port head valve layout Pontiac did offer a mechanical version of both cams at dealership parts departments
      Also I would like to say having owned a 69 RA III 4 speed GTO I just can't see how the word docile could be used to describe anything about that engine

    Lou,
    I'm having to burn a lot of brain cells but off the top of my head from my Pontiac Formula days, the cam, heads, and distributor were different between the III's and IV's.
    One of interesting note was that with the RAIV engine, was only available with the M-20 standard transmission.

    • @loucostabile

      Ram air IV had an aluminum intake manifold, different carburetor jetting. The heads are round port exhaust versus D port for the Ram Air III. Of course the exhaust manifolds are different also to accommodate the differently shaped exhaust ports. Many IV cars came with different rear end gears also. 3.90 was typical. The IV could be had with an automatic trans, but you couldn't order it with A/C.

    • @1974PanteraL
      @1974PanteraL 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it was available with the TH400. My earlier comment was in regard to the 4 speed transmission. Only the M20 was available with the IV, opposed to both the M20 and M21 available to the RAIII.

    I've always loved the Pontiac 400 Ram Air IV. They have such a nasty sounding idle for a small block. I know they're technically not a small or big block but I call it a small block because the Pontiac 400 started out as a 287ci 180hp boat anchor in 1955. By 1967 Pontiac bored it all the way out to 400ci

    • @loucostabile

    • @insulman100
      @insulman100 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually by 1967 Pontiac had increased the ci to 428 BTW cubic inches does not determine whether a engine is to be called a big block in order to be a big block the block must have 4.8 inches or greater bore centers Pontiac never produced a big block not even the 455
      remember the 1958 chevy 348 was considered to be the first big block installed in a car

      Hi Lou, many thanks for your reply. I've just acquired a car that almost fits the bill, a 1969 Alfa Romeo GT Junior in (almost) original condition. It's still worthy of your attention, however, should you ever be in my neck of the woods (which is Bavaria in Germany). There is no doubt in my mind that your good friend and collector extraordinaire of fine Italian machinery, Mr. Weinberger, would surely approve of my choice. An "Andrew Graham car" conversely, usually carries the scars of regular use; the odd stone chip on the hood and in mg particular case, a crate of good German beer in the trunk and an English newspaper on the passenger seat...

      Hi Bob Silver, I'm not sure about car prices, Barrett Jackson or Mecum can handle that end of the business. I'm sharing if I like it, and / or does the car have a great story, and / or do I think the Viewers will like it. Hope that helps, Lou P.S. I'm sure your right :-)

      Lou from what I've observed from watching recent Mecum Auctions the gentleman is correct about at least $100K. With the added advantage of having a low mileage it may go for $125 or 150K.

    RA III and RA IIII difference, I always believed it was in the heads.... RA III was regular ported heads and RA IIII was a D ported head motor?? I could be wrong, been many years since I had my RA III Formula Chicken.

      Jock you are incorrect the RA III heads had the standard Pontiac D-ports the D-port is the shape of the exhaust ports also the III had a cast iron intake the RA III had the same hood set-up as the IVs
      Now the RA IV had what Pontiac called round port heads again referring to the exhaust ports also the RA IVs had a aluminum intake and a bigger cam these are very special and extremely rare engines both the IIIs and IVs had cast iron headers Pontiac called them drop exhaust manifolds
      My first car was 69 GTO with the RA III 4 sp I was lucky to have survived this car these engines where a much more than the handling, braking and tires of that era could take

    Seems the only ones restoring these muscle cars are actually way older than the cars being restored. Who going to restore these old goobers?
