Pontiac was told by the GM brass to cancel this engine because it would not be sold with a warranty. Placing a warranty on a solid lifter high performance engine would only mean owners would race them and then bring them in for repairs at no charge. The Ram Air V engine would dust any LS6 Chevelle , Stage 1 or Hemi powered car. The engine was designed around the Ram Air IV even using the same camshaft specifications at 308 intake duration and 320 degrees exhaust but using solid lifters. The camshaft lift as .527. Not many car enthusiasts know that Ram Air IV engines use a special lifter called the HL-64 which worked just like a solid lifter above 2500 rpm. The Ram Air IV was a factory 450 horsepower engine and on youtube there are many videos showing this information but Pontiac rated them at 370 Horsepower and the Ram Air V rated at 375 Horsepower. The Ram Air V engine produced 500 plus factory horsepower so putting this engine in any GTO or Firebird would have put Pontiac at the top of the list. Ram Air IVs were still Pontiac's engine that put them above most of the competition in their day and even today at the Pure Stock Drags.

@@AlejandroP1980s That all depends on engine tune, suspension tune, and driver experience. I know what you're getting at, though. I just watched a Pure Stock drag video where a guy with a Hemi Super Bee (or was it a Roadrunner?) ran 11's against a GTO that ran low 12's. Now, we both know neither of those cars are exactly stock, but if this engine had been given the green light it would have been in ANY discussion of the baddest muscle cars of all time, along with the Boss 429, LS 454, and HemiCuda.

2 sets of GTO RamAir V exhaust manifolds are known.
And a few guys have singles of one side or the other.
Very very very limited availability no doubt.
Purely PMD built this very unique and correctly equipped Judge in the mid 80's.
Sold it to collector Alan G. of Arizona in summer 1986 for heavy heavy coins.
How on earth it landed at a Ford Dealership up north in 91 or 92 is a pure solid unanswered mystery.
Congrats to the present owner .

Damn, I want one of those RAV cars!
Imagine a 69/70 Trans Am with one of those engines. It would’ve left Hemis in the dust!
Just imagine if the RASD 455 had been everything Pontiac wanted it to be by ‘73. Or if their 640bhp 427 Hemi had been created.
Pontiac would’ve been the kings. Unreal.

It was built for Nascar and by 69 everyone was moving away from Mopar even Petty because aerodynamics mostly to the Ford Torino(Talledaga) which won the Championship (David Person) Petty finished with 10 wins with 9 being in the Ford. No big name guys had driven a Pontiac since early 60s. Even if one did in 69 the areodynamics would not have been good enough to win or someone would have switched in 69 or 70. Pontiac never won a race in 69 or 70.

Some information you all glaringly missed. Ram air V: the heads were unique... round ports huge valves. It was a race engine. Because of the European racing restrictions; think Boss 302. Four bolt main. The valves, I believe, were Sodium filled for cooling. How could you miss this information? Seriously? I remember one in pieces years ago: 301 race engine with special heads and huge valves. Rare motor. Were the heads steel?
