  • Tiers:
    Tier 1: I’M SCREAMING
This tier includes dancers who reliably force a poorly suppressed shriek from my vocal cords with their spectacular musicality and dynamic choices. Technique is no longer the focus for these dancers, and so they are able to really converse with the audience. Other than Ryusei, I would put Jumpei from Alaventa and Bailey Sok in this category, just to name a few.
Tier 2: let me take some notes real quick.
While these dancers might not be technically on par with the ones in the previous tier, there are some very impressive aspects to their technique and musicality, and I’ve spent time figuring out how to incorporate their strengths into my own dancing. These individuals show a maturity in their performance that the dancers in the tiers below don’t have yet.
Tier 3: giving me an A without the +
The dancers in this category are consistent, and their technique is really solid, but their performance leaves me wanting something more, dynamically or otherwise.
Tier 4: she has her moments
These dancers have some noticeable gaps in their technique, but their potential is obvious in videos where the choreography particularly suits them.
Tier 5: employable, but it’s a scroll for me.
A lot of people who are unfamiliar with the dance world can only picture people like Bailey when they hear the term “professional”, but in reality, the dance industry offers a wide variety of jobs that allow for a range of ability just like any other field. The dancers here could ostensibly get professional jobs, but they wouldn’t have stood out enough for me to watch beyond the first couple seconds if they had popped up on my Instagram explore page before I knew who they were.
Tier 6: typical dance class vibes
These dancers would look at home in a dance class. They're not so inexperienced that they can't keep up, but they're not skilled enough for most professional dance jobs either.
Tier 7: can sort of do the choreo
This is probably the closest thing I have to a "beginner" tier. These dancers have relatively underdeveloped technique and struggle to move full out in open style choreography.

mark tends to be overlooked espeically for outsiders and people who dont know dance. few years ago i had only but a very superficial understanding of dancing and mark didnt really stand out to me but after professional dance training and gaining much more insight/experience i could finally see what was so fascinating and impressive about his dance and why he rightfully deserves his placement (in the open style category). his groove and style is simply nuts. stage presence has also had a really big breakthrough in recent comebacks imo.

@@KPOPDanceDeepDives it's funny how you just started dancing hip-hop but u deemed urself good enough to put these idols on tiers as if you have the authority.🙄 And the way you critiqued Ten's style tells me how you don't really understand what it means to integrate different elements from different genres to create a new style. Dance like all arts isn't fixed, it's ever evolving and those who only know how to follow set of rules or peoples standard and preferences will end up rigid and will not create something new. Master had always broken some rules to create new beautiful stuff. That's how it has always been. Ten is a master who found his color. All of NCT members have their own color but Ten is so well integrated he's like a rainbow 🌈.

@@nominstory sure. For you she has done well. For me she was terrible. For you this maybe some sort of a labor of love. For me it looks like a labor of inflated ego and ignorance. Just cuz the world is mostly democratic, doesn't mean everyone's opinion has the same weight. If you're fine having someone who is practically a beginner, lecture you then go ahead. I prefer to listen to people with real authority in the area. A few research here and there and some people are already impressed with themselves and think they are good enough to make a critical analysis worthy of people's time. It's like listening to a lecture on law from a law student whose only source is his books vs a real lawyer who has been seasoned by time and his experiences with several cases and lawyers.

Haechan oh my god they really were not kidding when they labeled Haechan as "best dancer among vocalists and best vocalists among dancers". Every comeback I just find myself focusing on him especially with dance practices and individual fancams, like im not a dancer myself but i know for a fact that there choreos are very difficult but watching him doesn't make it feel that way. He looks so light on his feet and very graceful with his movements. And all those angles you pointed, he always had the best body lines amongst all of them when dancing and his crazyyy footworks and his hips!! His hips never lie like there are certain nct choreos that focus on the shoulders but he always tries to include his hips which is so pleasing to the eye. And recently the 2baddies dance practice, in the 2nd chorus, he's the only one really popping off his chest and it makes it look so soo good. Thank you for putting light into his name because personally I really think he should be one of the main dancers. But if not, he is indeed higher than all of those leads.
Buttt this whole video, thank you so much for putting so much time into making this and doing your research. Personally, I think Ten deserves #2 especially up to now with his Birthday choreography.

Ngl the way people attack the ranking instead of the comments made make it really clear that if the same stuff was said for every member, but it was just ordered in terms of the members' age (an analysis rather than a ranking), people would have literally no problem with this because Ten and Taeyong were still both praised a lot. It's so obvious people are so hung up about the exact numerical rankings and aren't really here to listen. If they actually watched the video instead of skipping through each ranking they would see that literally every member in the top ten is praised quite a lot. Another thing is that people seem to think Ten or Taeyong being ranked below others is an insult to their skills, when in fact it's more of a compliment to NCT as a whole that there are so many good dancers in there. Also, just because this ranking says something different to your opinion does not mean you have to change your opinion. If you don't think Ten or Taeyong or anyone should be placed where they are, that's completely fine. Make your own ranking video with your own, valid, reasoning. Write your own comment with your own, valid, reasoning in your own words, not the words of some other person. No need to insult the person behind this video and drag them for having a difference in opinion.

You explained perfectly why Jisung is the only male idol I can watch fancams of. I always feel uncomfortable seeing male idols, I get this vibe that they're trying to seduce me all the time (which is not a bad thing, its just not my thing) but Jisung always looks like he's just having the time of his life while dancing, he doesn't do it for the audience he does it for himself and I love it

I feel similarly about this with all of the NCT DREAM members. I feel like they’re just having fun executing the choreography and not going overboard or trying to be something they’re not. Their stage presence can be quite sweet, charismatic, engaging, occasionally sexy but mostly just fun and their fancams reflect this a lot. I’ve seen other boy group’s fancams and something about most of them or at least a good handful just feel a little contrived or disingenuous with their facial expressions. Just my thoughts anyway

yes!!! im usually okay with maintaining eye contact but smth abt male idol fancams is often very uncomfortable..... sexy expressions are fine imo if they seem to come naturally to the performer, but like the other comments said, most idols make it feel so forced/overboard.. so seeing jisung use whatever expressions he's feeling in the moment has always felt rly sincere + refreshing to me
i also really love how jisung sets boundaries in his performances.. if he isn't comfortable with a choreography move he adjusts it to fit himself and i really admire that. for example, he might omit or de-emphasize/desexualize hip thrusts, which ive always really respected since i know i wouldn't be comfortable performing similar dance moves.
idk, i might be projecting, but it's very comforting to see him stick to what he wants to do, even if its subtle.. considering how many celebrities (in any industry, not just kpop) tend to muffle their discomfort bc of fan/media pressure, i think idols setting small changes like this are really important

I'm so glad you paid attention to Jeno and pointed out what actually makes him stand out as a performer. Since I've been an NCTzen, nobody has really given him the credit and praise he deserves for being one of the top performers in the brand. Like they do acknowledge that he's a good dancer but never really mentioned any quality (at all) that made them think that way. I've witnessed a lot people saying he's only a good dancer "just because" he's putting more power and has more energy than the others. Some even go as far as saying he's just overdancing to make it look like he's good. Although he's become one of the most biased members these recent years, I can't help but notice he's still one of the underappreciated ones :(
Btw I thought he'd be around 8/9 based on your hints but I'm glad you also took time to watch his Villain performance!

he is indeed underappreciated, it’s either people too focusing on his visuals or they dont focus at him at all when he’s such a good dancer and performer. they prefer to focus on his mistake more (that he only did once a blue moon) and label him bad dancer when other members also do lots of mistakes 🤷🏻‍♀️

And yeah, I’ve noticed that with energetic performers, people tend to start and stop with a very lukewarm “so-and-so is a powerful dancer”. (I’m admittedly guilty of doing this is the past.)
Power tends not to be addressed as another useful quality to expand your range of expression, but rather as something you put on top of technique. I don’t like this perspective because it dismissed the technique needed to create power, as well as the ways in which power can be an artistic choice.

I'm a freelance dancer and I currently don't have a way to pay for dance classes or a dance school, so these videos almost work as a "free lesson" for me to help me think about and improve my dancing. It also helps because since I mainly dance to kpop I tend to think that they are these perfect dancing machines because I don't have the technique to point out the mistakes they make (because they are you know .. humans) and also hearing stories from someone like you who has received professional training but still struggles because well you never stop learning and improving!

For the Krumping part: groove is a very important aspect of krump, and there is a specific groove that you learn, which is a lot less relaxed than hip hop or house grooves.
As for Taeyong, I'm almost sure that the reason he developed so much tension is due to his back injury during his trainee day's (and looking at the neck tension when he dances makes me feel bad for him). He hasn't developed the underlying strength to fall back onto, so he overcompensates with the tension to keep everything in place. If he releases, he would probably be in more pain as those wrongly activated muscles are all he can rely on. It's one of the draw backs for SM's recent training style imo, where the unique quirks get favored over foundation. The only solution would be to relearn some things fundamentally, and we all know that won't be happening.
I'm glad you put Xiaojun and Jungwoo in those ranks, I often feel like fans rank them higher than they are based on their power or angles, without seeing the lacking underlying technique. Also nice that Taeil and Lucas aren't last as per their reputation lol, they do seem to have potential. Yuta has nice movement quality and a lot of style imo, this combination of strength and minimal movement feels so familiar from somewhere, but I can't put my finger on it. Him and Hendery are two prime examples of control based dancers, they won't groove to save their life but they do have a noticeable skillset. Whether that is neutral or bad is something popping dancers have been arguing about since the rise of dubstep music, but that's another topic. I never thought of Jeno as a groovy dancer, maybe I should pay some attention to that, nice video!

Great video as always. I’ve been into NCT Dream lately & one of the main reasons is because of how captivating I find them as dancers and performers. Mark and Jisung are so different in style but both equally fun to watch. I had noticed Jisung looks down a lot but hadn’t really thought about it in the way you do and it now makes sense to me how he remains captivating despite not making eye contact like a lot of charismatic idols do. Kudos to their vocal line as well-like you said, NCT seems to have a strong distinction between vocalists and dancers but Dream’s vocalists bridge that gap pretty well.

if i may humbly pose a suggestion, i would love if you either 1) made a video explaining all these techniques (ie body alignment, grooves, power, locks, etc) with examples of different dancers or 2) explain more elaborately in whatever videos you make what these are before detailing it on a dancer, as it would help a lot more! as a noob, i found it very difficult to grasp a lot of dance concepts.
finally, i wonder if you'd look at Exo Lay? I'm aware you've seen Kai before and was wondering what your thoughts on Lay was? He participated in a chinese street dance show called Street Dance of China where there are clips of him krumping and a little bit of locking and other styles.

So Jaehyun's issue is mainly consistency (which I understand). I think his confidence in his performance fluctuates which is unfortunate but when he is feeling it, it really is a joy to watch him (for me at least). So if he fixed his consistency issues, would his ranking change? And if yes, where would you place him? And yeah I thought I was the only one who noticed how much more comfortable he is when he's wearing a beanie and vans (and baggy pants) 😁
Edit: And I don't know if it's just me but he seemed a lot more confident and consistent during his rookie days. Not saying this is the definite truth but he's mentioned how he felt pressure to be perfect all the time. I noticed that the less popular he was in his rookie days, the more comfortable he was to be openly playful and carefree. Maybe that might be playing into his confidence in performing as well? If he didn't have this feeling of pressure in looking visually perfect all the time, would he be more laid back and confident in showing his personal artistry like he was before? I personally think he has some potential groove when he's very relaxed but that's just what I see 🤷🏻‍♀️. But yeah Shotaro is great and Mark's groove makes him such a standout dancer and Jisung is so clean to watch (especially loved watching his fancam in Ridin')

If I'm correct I think he'd still be considered a rookie in 2018 and personally I really thought one of his best performances was during Boss. Yes! I initially started doing that just to keep things organized for after the video, thinking no one would care much, but once I started getting comments about it, I realized it worked as a teaser of sorts.

I hope the negative comments wont discourage you to make future videos like this. Unfortunately some fans just cant accept criticisms about their faves who have been put on a pedestal by the fandom since their debut.

I did not see what you meant when you claimed Jeno is a groovy dancer, but when I watched his collab stage with Kai, Seulgi and Karina just now, the difference between Kai and Jeno's footwork in the chorus part was staggering. I can now clearly see what you meant when you said Kai is very tense in general in your original open style video and I feel like I'm enlightened lol. I was not sure of your placement of him at 6th but that video kind of did it for me HAHAH. Thanks for sharing your insights!!!

Happy to hear I could provide some insight!
For me too, I definitely would not have classified Jeno as a groovy dancer, but I feel like the more he refined his technique, the more qualities he has which are consistent with groovy dancers. It’s cool to see more of his musicality and texture uncovered over time.

I found it extremely interesting when you talked about wayv's teamwork. I'm curious what you think of groups like ateez that don't focus on synchronization, but in my opinion still manage to maintain a good level of teamwork because they all focus on projecting power.

    • @KPOPDanceDeepDives
      @KPOPDanceDeepDives  ปีที่แล้ว +37

That's a super interesting comparison! I agree with you about Ateez. Even though they aren't synchronized in quality of movement, the fact that they have a shared goal for expressing the songs binds them together.
The problem with WayV is that there seems to be a level of detachment from the project. This leads each member to approach their performance in a totally different way. You have Lucas who is this "Cool Guy", lowkey, more hip-hop leaning dancer, Ten who is more invested in the lyrical and cinematic aspects of the song, and Yangyang and Xiaojun who are just generally performing well, and Winwin and Hendery who are withdrawn in their expressions. More than technique, I think SM needs to have a chat with WayV (and the members need to chat amongst themselves) about what their goal is with the songs and choreography.

@@KPOPDanceDeepDives it looks like despite of the members having different styles and being on different levels of technique, they have a general consensus of what the song's feeling is and are able to perform accordingly, something that wayv ends up lacking and makes the gap between their skills more noticeable.
also, despite everything and lucas being barely considered a member anymore, i have to say i think people overexaggerated how bad he's at dancing. sure, he's no main or lead dancer material and he has some very awkward fancams, but he's a good performer and he manages to not look awkward most of the time despite being so tall and having very long limbs. i'm sure he could've go much further with his skills overall, not only in dancing, if sm bothered to make him any more than the "tall, buff handsome guy with a deep voice" and his scandal didn't happen.

    • @HanQ28
      @HanQ28 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@KPOPDanceDeepDives As a big fan of WayV, I'm actually a bit pessimistic about their teamwork and cohesiveness on stage. I feel like Winwin and Hendery just aren't very expressive nor versatile performers (of the kpop genre) and a chat cannot fix this issue. I do think Xiaojun/Yangyang/Kun have shown more potentials in this aspect. I can expect more improvement from them.
Lucas and Ten both have very strong personal styles in dancing/performing. They may have less versatility in performing concepts that don't fit their personal styles. More so for Lucas.
EDIT: WayV's stage presence really reminds me of (G)I-DLE which I'm also a big fan of. They also don't have the best teamwork on stage, despite the fact that Soyeon is a very strong leader and is able to give tons of talks about their projects. She even has nearly full control over Gidle's projects. However, Gidle still doesn't have very good teamwork on stage, nearly five years after their debut. It's not because they don't understand their performances, and not because the members don't get along with each other. I believe that it really just comes down to the lack of ability.
Miyeon (and Shuhua in the past) is just not very expressive on stage. Shuhua shows more room for improvement, but still not a very versatile performer. Yuqi has better techniques and versatility, but still can't portray some concepts (like Nxde) as well as others (like Tomboy). Minnie and Soyeon are super stylised performers and are very different from each other, kinda like Ten and Lucas. While I love them as individual performers, they are a bit less versatile as team players. If I look at them performing while muting the sound, I wouldn't know which song they're performing. Minnie is almost always staring into your soul with mysterious eyes, while Soyeon is always...just being the queen that she is.
So basically, if Gidle cannot sort out their teamwork and cohesiveness issues, with Soyeon as a leader and producer, I really have very little hope for WayV who have much less creative control over their music and choreography. I have much more hope and confidence in their future individual projects.
