Great video and very on point! While people say “I don’t view it as investment”, it still feels like the value matters a lot (and future potential value), why else people are willing to pay huge money for rookies etc and all time great players other then the GOATs don’t get much hobby love (and even for GOATs it needs to be special card - looking into future what will be in demand and matter). Makes me question how many actual fans who like to collect there are..
Thanks for the video. Good perspective to not follow the crowd and identifying that there is a market for lower 1st tier and 2nd tier players. I’ve always wondered why some of these all time greats don’t see more collecting demand.
I am enjoying watching your videos. When you are talking about the average person getting into collecting for fun, like myself who likes it and thinks the stuff is pretty neat, but ain't paying $200 for a card it gets tough. I wanted my son to grow up collecting cards like I did but there just ain't nothing for the fan who just wants to have fun. Over the past few years i've boughten a few $40 hobby boxes at Walmart and Target and gotten literally nothing. Instant turnoff. For $40 I better at least get some sort of return. It just seems like the way this hobby is going, it is not sustainable.
"You don't have to just follow the crowd. You can also just collect great cards of great players regardless of position." -- The Sports Card Dad Shout this from the rooftops.
Exactly. I've never had anything graded, all my cards are raw. I even remember when coming back to the hobby in 2007 after 15 years, BBCE wasn't grading for PSA and they weren't shrinkwrapping boxes.
Sports card radio got mad at me for saying Geoff Wilson is getting better and I don't care who gets mad at me but Dustin is getting better too. I like most of the cards you buy.
Who Dat. We're not playing well at all this year. So many injuries, 😢 But, I've just gotten into collecting, and I've started with Drew Brees cards. If i ever branch out, i think it would be to Payton Manning because he's an so time great and from NOLA - like me. I used to have season tickets, in the Aaron Brooks era... Right after we won our first playoff game... Which, i was at that game.
@@der2397 I watched my little nephew break down and cry four years in a row! Today, he is a fellow veteran, a single father, and STILL a die-hard Bills Mafia fan and he is still collecting cards!
Next time Your IN West By GOD Virginia come by and you'll see Organized Chaos and you can Gander through my going on 40 years of Madness and we can play Tecmo Bowl or Super Tecmo Bowl tooI have Both Haha.
Definitely people need to think more independently about this. Everyone is chasing all the hype all the time. This is greatly skewing the the way collecting is done. I seriously get tired of trying to trade with people for my team and all they want is either Ohtani or the latest hype player. It drives me nuts. No, I'm not going to trade a Jackson Merrill or Shohei Ohtani for a Tanner Banks. But if you _actually_ like baseball and you _actually_ have a team, maybe you can find a mid-tier relief pitcher on your team you'd trade for. But no. Everyone wants to trade for the big money players. It kinda sucks.
I think the rise of sports card "influencers" and many content creators have taken the fun out of collecting. I will watch some creators to see what new product is out but that's about it. I fell into the traps of buying what was hyped, but only for a short time and now I have a few cards I wish I never bought. With that said, now I stick to players I like and find exciting. I only went for the prospects 3 times and all 3 times were players in the farm system for the Yankees. I feel bad for these people overextending themselves financially because they saw some "Spending $15,000 at (fill in the blank) card show" or "Just did a $30,000 deal at the (fill in the blank) card show" or even worse, "we bought the entire table" videos. Not counting a few rookies of Judge, Ohtani, Acuna, Vlad Jr. and a few others I'm fine going and also picking up those $1-3 base 2nd, 3rd and so on year cards. My 80's and 90s collection of Don Mattingly, Nolan Ryan, Mark Mcgwire and others are going nowhere and I'm fine if I never get a penny for those cards. As a NY Giants fan, there is no modern player I can really get behind to collect besides Dexter Lawrence. I started collecting Barkley but I tossed those once he signed with Philly.

No shout out for Darren Sproles? He was electric for every team he played for.
