I have to tell you I have a background in historical costume and this movie made me crazy because it was all over the map. I am a stickler for authenticity. I wouldn't have minded as much if they had not put a date at the beginning to show London of the 1890's. But I had a wise friend who told me, "You are an artist and a creative person, go back and look at it in that way and ignore the dates." I did and it was exquisite to watch a second time. Dracula's hairstyle when Johnathan visited Dracula's castle was definitely one of my favorite costume designs from the movie because of how otherworldly it made him look; it made his forehead appear bigger, and the buns made me think that Dracula was hiding horns under them. If I were Johnathan Harker, I would've immediately fled back to England upon first seeing Dracula. 😅
I'm late to the party, but I wanted to say that I loved your video! I just rewatched the movie and your analysis really helped me gain even more appreciation for the costumes and characters. Thank you for sharing!
Although it was false advertising to say it was "accurate to the book" where it exactly wasn't actually regarding Dracula's appearance (he''s supposed to be clad in all black without a single speck of color and his old form had facial hair as well) and the fact the original book wasn't a love story at all but rather Dracula himself treated women including Mina as extensions of his conquest since he rather behaved much like Dragons did in folklore and fairy tales that had a habit of abducting virgins and the knight come to their rescue which was the case for the protagonists in Dracula. Especially since in Romanian folklore there's a Dragon named "Zmeu" who eerily fits the description that everything Dracula does not to mention his name being "Devil" and "Son of the Dragon" as well. Not to mention the film once again omitted that Dracula was a student of the scholomance that the Devil collects the 10th scholar as his due which is actually how Dracula became a vampire in the book.
Thanks so much Chris. This is one of my older videos but the costumes are so gorgeous and I am very pleased to know that so many Dracula fans love the costumes as much as I do.
Excellent video, well done! It gave me a newfound appreciation for the film, Coppola and Ishioka. Regarding Keanu and popular opinion, I think he was perfect for the role. He does often seem stiff, but I think in contrast to the heavyweight, spirited performances by Oldman, Hopkins, Ryder, etc. he seemed tense, vulnerable and in over his head (even if not intentional). It added a genuine sense of vulnerability, naivety and being overwhelmed to his character, which was perfect. I can't picture anyone else in that role otherwise. Maybe he played the role exactly as Coppola planned for?
Costume Cinematografico once at the beginning and once at the end of the video you call the beginning sequence of the movie an epilogue instead of a prologue. no biggie, just for future reference
I grew up with this movie and I actually got to see Dracula's Red Helmet in person which was amazing. I really enjoyed this video and the BTS look into it.
The best video on costumes and design I have ever seen. Searched and searched for more info on these Dracula designs, but none hold a candle to the great work you've done on this all inclusive video. I immediately subscribed! Thank you for this wonderful presentation!

I am so incredibly grateful for this video. Bram Stoker's Dracula has long been one of my all time favorite films in terms of costume/wardrobe. I really enjoy channels like yours, and somehow nobody ever mentions this film! Thank you for recognizing it!
First of all fucking amazing video! Seriously amazing and the first one that I have watched in this type of genre. Thank you so much for doing this video because Bram Stoker's Dracula is my all-time favorite movie and you helped me appreciate it even more! Honestly I didn't pick up on the themes throughout the costumes even though I watched it over a hundred times! For example the dragon / Phoenix design on all the different costumes, I never noticed that before. I've always appreciated the costumes in this movie and thought they were mind-blowing and beyond unique but you doing this very thorough and detailed video has helped me see things and appreciate things I didn't before! Now I'm going to have to watch it for the 101 time just to notice the things you pointed out! Lol Once again thank you so much and you're amazing!
Thank you so much! Yes, I had seen it many times and never noticed all of the details until I had a better look and was able to see Eiko's stunning sketches. I have a much greater appreciation for her work after doing this video. Thank you for your lovely comment!

When they tried to cast the role of Dracula for the movie “Dracula 2000”, they had a difficult time finding actors who were even willing to tackle the role after Dracula was so masterfully performed by Gary Oldman. Ultimately, Gerard Butler played the role and he did a great job. But surpassing Oldman’s performance is practically impossible. It’s one of my favorite performances of all time.

That was a fabulous analysis of the costumes :-) I'm fascinated by the red 'muscle' armour suit; it seems totally impractical but it looks so striking that that's all that really matters.
I absolutely love this. In recent years I discovered a section of the library that features all books about the behind the scenes facts, artistry, costumes, make-up, weaponry, set design, and music behind films and it has been quite a treat. Often times, unless you watch what brief info is given on DVD extras, you don't get to go that far in depth as you have here (truly amazing) to see the details that these artists and craftsmen and women have done. They often work countless hours and months on say one dress for a 30 shot where the actors are bathed in darkness! Well done videos like this and books give them credit where credit is certainly do. Keanu Reeves aside, this remains one of the most beautiful, dark, and visually striking films I have ever seen. I loved it so much that one year, for Halloween, I went as the undead Mina in her wedding dress.
Cool ! I was taught a little “ drama “ not only at home , but from my friends at school who were in the drama club, they would teach me about how makeup and costumes were the one part of any play or theatrical piece , that was the one thing that made it work .

Thank you so much for this video and the detailed overview of the wigs and costumery. I think the artisans of all did a phenominal job and I have searched the internet until I found this in depth breakdown. I have seen this movie many, many years ago and have only revisited it recently; ad nauseum, because of Gary Oldman's stellar and sensual potrayal of a misunderstood monster who has spent centuries looking for his long lost one true love as evidenced in his dialogue, "I have crossed oceans of time to find you." I was particularly intrigued by Draculas hair design in the scene where Jonathan Harker arrives at his Castle, and how it was fashioned and what was the inspiration for it. Now that I have your in depth analysis, I can emerse myself even deeper into this tale of love and redemption lost and then found. Well done! Thank you so kindly.
Beautifully done video. Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992) has many faults with its story but everything about its overall design (and it’s phenomenal score by Wojciech Kilar) is perfect. One note I’d like to add is that the intro sequence is the film’s prologue, not epilogue.
Hi leai, I haven't watched Versailles yet, but I will definitely be doing Interview with a Vampire in the near future. This week I have a video on Sleepy Hollow coming out that I hope you will enjoy. :)
Thanks for you video. Dracula is one of my favorite films and I hadn’t noticed certain details you brought up like the snakes embroidered on Lucy’s dress. The costumes of this film are so good. Have you thought about doing videos for the costumes of Moulin Rouge(2001) and Dune(1984)?
These are great video series. Very detailed and helpful for anyone seriously interested in art and craft of filmmaking. I'd love to see many other films here such as Dune (1984), Aliens (1986), Spartacus (1960), 2001 (1968), Solaris (1972) and many more.
Oh! I would love if you make video about any of the Irene Sharaff works wich are awesome! Specially Gene Kelly's Hello Dolly! Featuring Barbra Streisand an that marvelously embroidered golden dress
she direct and made costumes in films such as frida, titus, and my absolute favorite across the universe and she did direct stage such as spider-man turn off the dark and 2 other plays she direct while making costumes at the same time was the metropolitan opera of the magic flue and the stage production of Disney's the lion king
well done, I dearly loved the costuming in this movie. can you please do the Alienist next? Pretty please, the joins on the stripes and matching of plaids are almost otherworldly!!
Has anyone asked you to cover the Hulu series Harlots? I'd also love to see you do Eiko Ishioka's work for the film The Cell. Thanks for the amazing videos!
I enjoyed your video almost as much as the movie!! It was EXCELLENT. Couple things. I had no idea that the costume designer wasn't even a costume designer at all, but was still selected by Coppola for the job. Total genius. I was also blown away by the sheer beauty and intricacy of all these stupendous outfits, particularly the Victorian era gowns. How this woman was able to achieve such a vast array of fabulous garments, armory, and monsters, I will never know. P.S. I particularly enjoyed you little aside on the tragic casting of Keanu Reeves in the titular role of Jonathan Harker, a decision that nearly destroyed the entire film, as far as I'm concerned. It was equally as disastrous as Coppola's last minute selection of his daughter Sophia to play the love interest in Godfather III. Oh well, nobody's perfect.
Hi Tiff, thank you so much for commenting. It's funny, I just watched John Wick 4 and Keanu is perfect in that role. I just don't think he was right for Dracula.
@@Costume_CO PRECISELY. Keanu is ideal for action roles like this, especially in The Matrix. He's got serious kung fu skills. But to call this guy a "serious actor" is like calling Pee Wee Herman a serious actor!!
Every time i watch this movie, I feel it is incredibly underrated. The look and cinematography for the time is wicked. Keanu and Winona are the two weakest parts of the movie. A very sensual movie, I wonder i it was a HBO mini series or something how much more the sex would be amped up. I think a longer movie/series would make it far more emotional of a movie. But yeah that opening sequence is wicked that armor he wears,...why haven’t I dressed up like that for Halloween yet!
Fantastic, in-depth video! I discovered your channel when searching for Blade Runner costume information for a friend who's doing a cosplay. Subscribed and I'll check out your Patreon too!
I wonder if the gold embroidered bird-like things on "old" Dracula's red robe are meant to evoke the two-headed eagle of the Eastern Roman Empire, later also adopted by the Holy Roman Empire and by various principalities in Central and Eastern Europe during the Middle Ages.
Costume Cinematografico No,but I'll try & see if it's at the Library or on TH-cam. ( My checking acct got hacked into so I can't afford to rent movies on Netflix right now😕) Thanks for the reccomendation!👍

I've watched this video several times. Mina's green dress and Dracula's gray suit are my favorites. But I'm here commenting now to ask you a question. Have you *seen* the costumes in Carnival Row? Or Britannia? They are GORGEOUS and I'd love to hear your thoughts on them or any info you can find (I frankly don't know where to look). Love the channel and all the videos! Binged all the GoT ones more than once!
Hi Taylor, thank you so much! I have seen Carnival Row and I loved the costumes. I have had it on the backburner...I might do a video when the new season is out. Thank you so much for your kind words.
Dracula is Dracula no matter what movie Dracula lives on immortal! But can I ask was he real on for himself but no can I believe must I I love Dracula but dose he love me back because he loved what I hear from, sorry you love only one,but not!!!
By the way that's almost certainly a diplomatic uniform, rather than military, at 11:53. The design of embellishment on the front is still worn today by some ambassadors and Canadian lieutenant-governors.
As gorgeous and striking Eiko Ishioka’s costume designs for this movie were, I do believe period accuracy is very important when telling a story like this, I think it helps to create the necessary contrast between reality (in the story) and the supernatural occurrences affecting that reality and the people in it.I definitely disagree with the categorical statement of the historical accuracy being only a job for historians and not for production or costume designers. That’s why I consider 2006 BBC’s Dracula (Marc Warren, Dan Stevens,Sophia Myles) one of the best live action adaptations of the novel, perfectly period accurate when it comes to costumes and production.
Thanks for commenting. Well, I'm kind of surprised that I said it in that way because it's not completely what I believe - this video is over a year ago and it might have just been my mind set at the time I recorded it. As I stated, the costume designers job is to fulfill the needs of the script and the director, but it doesn't mean that I think historical accuracy has no place in there. If you watch some of my other videos where I talk about it being a marriage (like in my Reign or Outlander video series), I think you will see what I mean. This movie, however, is rather art house and really in no way reflects reality. I think where you and I might differ is that I don't think a movie or show has to be historically accurate to be considered good design in the same way that there are plenty of historically accurate productions that are not necessarily good design.
I've spent many years researching the Victorian era and normally I'd agree with you about historical accuracy, but in this case I saw this film as a fairytale not a representation of the period, it wasn't supposed to be the real 1890s, etc. They made the inaccurate choices on purpose, not because they did no research
Wonderful video. I see that it was originally posted 4 years ago. The audio contained a lot of interference while I watched it. I suffered through because it was such great material and images are very useful and beautiful. Perhaps the file has been damaged?
Hello Annette, thank you very much for commenting. I think that there is a ticking sound that is the result of my cheap micropohone that I had. Since then I have improved on my equipment and editing style. I hope that you will find it a vast improvement in my more recent videos. Thanks again for the comment. Cheers, Heidi.
Can anyone help me figure out the costumes of the three women (brides)with Dracula. What kind of hair pieces did they wear. I plan on recreating the pieces for Halloween. I noticed that the woman with the red/brown hair had on a headband and Monica had a breaded crown with traces of silver and gold in her hair. How could get something like that? Any suggestions ?
Just having look, they are all hats/ turbans of some sort, even Monica's. The Medusa like character has a wig of ringlets/headpiece that incorporates gold snakes. Monica has a headdress with braided hair pieces added to the front to look like it's her own hair with added layers attached to fall over her shoulders. The fitted hat is sort of like an I Dream of Jeannie Arabian headpiece with what I think is a high ponytail.
Loved the movie....Loved yr Video!!!!! Awesome!🤩🤩💯💯👍👍

Hi Whispslinger, thank you so much for your lovely comment! Warmest regards, Heidi.
WTH HOW HAVE I NOT SEEN THIS VIDEO YET LOL.
Haha!
Fantastic video. There's so much detail and I love all the visual comparisons!
Thank you very much!
What a great video, you really know your stuff 😳 I learned a lot, more than just abt the costumes too
Thank you so much saf!
Thanks for in depth backstory. When my hair gets like Gary's do, I clip it off. Ahhh
Fascinating thank you love Eiko Ishioka’s work
Really? How so?
Beautifully done video. Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992) has many faults with its story but everything about its overall design (and it’s phenomenal score by Wojciech Kilar) is perfect. One note I’d like to add is that the intro sequence is the film’s prologue, not epilogue.
Truly a great analogy! Thank you so much for this❤
Thank you. ❤️ I really appreciate your comment.
Absolutely adored this video on one of my fave movies! Big love from London 🇬🇧
Thank you so much. Big love back to you from Canada 🇨🇦
can you do interview with the Vampire that would be great
Hi leai, I haven't watched Versailles yet, but I will definitely be doing Interview with a Vampire in the near future.
Hello, I definitely have Moulin Rouge on my list, maybe Dune. Just had a rewatch of that movie a few months ago. Loved the costumes!
Thanks for all the research, very interesting! Good job!
These are great video series. Very detailed and helpful for anyone seriously interested in art and craft of filmmaking.
I'd love to see many other films here such as Dune (1984), Aliens (1986), Spartacus (1960), 2001 (1968), Solaris (1972) and many more.
Dune and Alien I have on my backburner. 😁
Oh! I would love if you make video about any of the Irene Sharaff works wich are awesome! Specially Gene Kelly's Hello Dolly! Featuring Barbra Streisand an that marvelously embroidered golden dress
Thanks Ana! I will check it out. I didn't know that Gene Kelly was in Hello Dolly.
Costume CO He directed and produced it thats why the dancing sequence is si magical
Wow, I didn't know that!
she direct and made costumes in films such as frida, titus, and my absolute favorite across the universe and she did direct stage such as spider-man turn off the dark and 2 other plays she direct while making costumes at the same time was the metropolitan opera of the magic flue and the stage production of Disney's the lion king
+J's Watch Okay, so Across the Universe? I don't do theatre on this channel even though my background is in theatre. :)
please try
well done, I dearly loved the costuming in this movie.
can you please do the Alienist next? Pretty please, the joins on the stripes and matching of plaids are almost otherworldly!!
Hi MJ, I have a part 1 on the Alienist/the Frankenstein Chronicles, but I still have part 2 to release.
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and efforts you put into these videos. i will most certainly be watching both parts.
Hi mj, it's my pleasure! I still have to finish part 2 of the Alienist. I promise that I will get that up in the next few weeks.:)
Has anyone asked you to cover the Hulu series Harlots?
I'd also love to see you do Eiko Ishioka's work for the film The Cell.
Thanks for the amazing videos!
Hey Donovan, I don't know Harlots but I am familiar with Eiko's work on The Cell.
I loved the show Harlots! Did not get its due when it was on.
I never saw that Coppola’s Dracula was more faithful to the book as Christopher Lee’s HORROR OF DRACULA.
I'm not a big horror or vampire movie guy but this movie is littered with histotical references that really interests me
I enjoyed your video almost as much as the movie!!
@@Costume_CO
PRECISELY. Keanu is ideal for action roles like this, especially in The Matrix. He's got serious kung fu skills. But to call this guy a "serious actor" is like calling Pee Wee Herman a serious actor!!
🤣
Great video!!! ♡
Thank you for this video!
It's my pleasure. Thank you for commenting. 😁
Can you do the costumes from the Ten Commandments? The Egyptian costumes are gorgeous!
I second that request, boy would that be great, wow!!
Thank you for this inspiring video!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for commenting!
Thank you .....it was great❤️❤️❤️
+malhadari Thank you!
Fantastic, in-depth video! I discovered your channel when searching for Blade Runner costume information for a friend who's doing a cosplay. Subscribed and I'll check out your Patreon too!
Ah, thank you so much!
This video is brilliant! Thank you
Glad you liked it!
Thank you for this!!! I just found out your channel, you got yourself a new subscriber
Thanks stardustandstripes!
Hi. I know you have a looong list already but could you add Dangerous Liaisons (1988) and Priscilla, Queen of the Desert? :) Pretty, please. :)
+Root Menu Yes, I will add them. No one's asked for Priscilla yet, but it's one of my favourites.
Great! Priscilla is so fun to watch. I never get tired of it. :)
I wonder if the gold embroidered bird-like things on "old" Dracula's red robe are meant to evoke the two-headed eagle of the Eastern Roman Empire, later also adopted by the Holy Roman Empire and by various principalities in Central and Eastern Europe during the Middle Ages.
Very possibly!
think you can do a review of the French tv show Versallies , that would be great
Wow! Gary Oldham looks a lot like Johnny Depp;in fact,I thought they did a remake w/him as Dracula.(hmm.Good Idea!;-)
+ROBYN MARKOW Have you seen Dark Shadows? He's so good in that and the costumes are great.
Costume Cinematografico No,but I'll try & see if it's at the Library or on TH-cam. ( My checking acct got hacked into so I can't afford to rent movies on Netflix right now😕) Thanks for the reccomendation!👍
+ROBYN MARKOW It's a bit older so you might be able to find it there or download it if you have the means.
as much as I love eiko ishioka and she deserves her Oscar for best costume design in bram stoker's Dracula can you talk about the costumes of film and stage of Julie taymor pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease
+J's Watch She is a wonder as a director to. Any particular movie?
she direct and made costumes in films such as frida, titus, and my absolute favorite across the universe
J's Watch
I second that. I love the eclectic style Taymor used for "Titus" and "The Tempest".
don't forget across the universe
J's Watch
Have yet to see that one. It's on my list.
Your posts are great. Have you done one on Boardwalk Empire? I’d love to hear your sumptuous descriptions of the costumes
Hi Colby, thank you so much for your comment. I didn't get to see that show.
interesting from a perspective I don't generally consider much
The best, the only vampire movie, okay the Lost Boys my favorite vampire movies,is too so many,Done is all I want, and recommend, done!
Dracula is Dracula no matter what movie Dracula lives on immortal! But can I ask was he real on for himself but no can I believe must I I love Dracula but dose he love me back because he loved what I hear from, sorry you love only one,but not!!!
great job. I loved it
Thank you!
By the way that's almost certainly a diplomatic uniform, rather than military, at 11:53. The design of embellishment on the front is still worn today by some ambassadors and Canadian lieutenant-governors.
I'd you could do a video on Interview With A Vampire you would be my absolute hero! 🙌🏻😁☺️
I've had it on my list for ages. I'll see what I can do.
@@Costume_CO amazing, thank you! This was so great, I can't wait! 😁😆🥰
Excellent! ❤❤❤😊
Thank you! 😃
Thank you, :)
Great video. I have one question for the fim people: why would Dracula hold a walking stick with a silver ornament? He would avoid silver.
Good point Tony!
Thx. I really love the way you've presented your video. I love to know how and why things are done! Stay safe.
19:57 - it's not "mores", there's an accent over the "e". mor-ays. Oy.
I found that one really cheesy and dry compared to this.
Great costumes can make or break a movie/show, but so can a dull story.
Wow that was interesting as well, as fascinating it takes village to make great, fashion, in film.🙂⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Thank you so much Zelda!
@@Costume_CO thank you! Looking forward to seeing more.
Lemme have a closer look. 😊
@@Costume_CO Thankyou so so much! I truly appreciate it
Where are the gowns the brides wore today? Are they owned by the director, Francis Ford Coppola?
I'm sorry that I don't know the answer to this. If I find out I will let you know. Thank you for commenting.
