The USAS American Mariner (a.k.a.) The Target Ship from Skydio2+ Drone

  • I flew a Skydio2+ drone around this amazing ship with a very unique history. She was born just miles up the Chesapeake Bay in Baltimore, trained our troops, tested cutting-edge radar tracking equipment to protect the States from anti-ballistic-missiles and even helped bring an astronaut (Wally Schirra) safely home. She served the Coast Guard, Merchant Marine Academy, Army, Air Force, NASA and the Navy. To all the veterans who served on this ship or any service, thank you!
You can learn more about her history at:
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USAS_Am...
There's even an outstanding documentary book by Herbert Paul Hahn:

Just thinking how much lead is in the ocean around that poor boat

I've actually found myself fishing along side that vessel on many occasions, she was in much better shape back in the 2012 era. It's actually known in the area as the target ship.

Looks like the floor pan on my 67 Chevy pickup lol That old ship lives! It had not made that last journey to the breakers yard....home to many and admired by a few.

Many thanks Knut! Glad you enjoyed it. Maybe I'll make one with fly-overs around our light houses in the bay.

As a fellow sailor I feel for everyone who served on that ship even though it was purposely sunk in the bay and no one died scuttling

Even though it was sunk on purpose it is still sad for everyone who served on her and had to watch her go down

I'm glad you liked it. It was only the fifth time I flew that drone so I apologize it wasn't smoother. If we get back out there this summer, I'll make another fly-by.

At the 5:04 time, if you look at the bottom left of the video you will see a round cylinder. It is a 1,000 lb. bomb. It has 1,000 stamped on it. There are a couple more 500 lb around that area as well.

That's a good catch! I read articles about them using dummy (inert) bombs so they could test accuracy of impacts. If they were live they would obviously lose their target along with additional environmental issues.

You cannot look at this and believe that a ship has a Soul, the idea is too heartbreaking. We have to believe she in just a pile of broken steel plates, that she is just a worn our machine, that she is just a target for the might of the world's largest navy to test their most horrendous weapons upon. We cannot believe she was ever alive, ever part of a crew on a mission, on many missions, missions that saved human lives and helped the world in small ways. We can't believe she was a Hero. But we can still call her "She" and weep.

A wonderful Old Ship . Once glorious. Now a good old Rusty bucket. Seagulls and other birds need a place to perch and fish need a place to hide from rough water

Well said Adriaan. Usually we see at least 200 birds on her. Maybe the previous day's storm kept them away for this visit.

Drop a tissue out of your pocket, you'll be fined for littering.
Abandon a warship containing toxic materials, oils and chemicals in the sea and absolutely nothing will be done about this grotesque act of contamination and disposal.

    • @Turboy65
      @Turboy65 ปีที่แล้ว +10

All toxic materials, oils, and chemicals on that ship were removed from it before it took its first incoming round. But thanks for playing anyway.

@Felix Cat: With respect; sometimes it’s better to keep your mouth shut and let folks think you a fool, than to open it and remove any and all doubt.
While I appreciate that you have a passion for things environmental, your comment should have been research a bit. It would have shown you that your statement was inaccurate. As was said before me, thank you for playing.

@@Steve9312028 In actual fact, I spent some time looking on the Internet to find any mention that this vessel had been subjected to environmental damage control measures by having all of her contaminants removed prior to her having been sunk!
There was a listing for this specific vessel, as an asbestos contaminated vessel that had contaminated every person that had sailed on her!
I knew from her construction date that she would have had huge amounts of asbestos used in multiple areas throughout the vessel, possibly more than most due to her various roles and the equipment fit those roles necessitated.
Environmental and marine protection are relatively new concepts, and at the time that this vessel was sunk in 1966, it was hardly relevant, certainly to the military.
Given the lack of environmental and marine protection awareness at that time, and the military practice of dumping whatever they wanted into the sea, together with no mention that I could find to say that this very heavily contaminated vessel had been stripped of all contaminants prior to her being sunk, I stand by my original comment.
Please feel free to publish official military records that verify that this vessel had had all of her contaminants removed prior to her being sunk in 1966, to support your above statement!
If you are unable to do so, perhaps you should have taken your own unsolicited advice before 'speaking'.
