- Combining tensile and tents, the company Tentsile have a range of tree tents, to let you camp, between trees. Where did the idea come from ? How does a tensile structure work? Are tree tents better for the environment? How do tree tents protect forests from being cut down?
I talked to Alex Shirley-Smith, tree tent architect and founder of Tentsile, about the science of tensile tree tents.
Dorothy Ries Faison and I, camp overnight in a Tentsile Stingray. How easy was it to put up? How safe and comfortable was it to sleep in?

Great idea!
The treehouses that I have been involved in building have all been suspended. 1) climb tree 2) haul up joists 3) make A-frame in tree 4) suspend A-Frame from corners from branches 5) add floorboards to A-frame to make platform 6) construct house/canopy on/above platform (or just use a tent). The tree can grow and move without constaint and without stressing the structure and the tree is unharmed. These kind of structures can either be placed in a single tree if it is big enough or between trees if they are close enough. They can move in the wind, but thats a feature not a bug.
Curious about how you attach the joists in such a way as to allow for growth and movement? Tree houses are super fun, but making them durable is a challenge.
@@DistracticusPrime using climbing rope - each treehouse has to be different because each tree is different but essentially the platform is rested/lashed/hung on the tree at various points depending on the unique geometry.

Absolutely fantastic ! I'm sure putting up the Tentsile treehouse brought back the much younger psyches in you and your wife ! Nurturing and connecting to the younger you again ! It's so very necessary ! It always hurt me to see people hitting nails and bolts into a beautiful tree ! Or chopping it down. We know what happened to ancient groups of people living on an island with many trees. No trees, no life. A tree close to you feeds the soul. Goodluck with establishing your pristine forest ! There's myriads of positive possibilities. Mazel tov !

I use ratchet straps on a daily basis and still set them up wrong half the time 😂 I fully understand. This looks awesome!

Same here. Upside-down, backwards, something almost exactly half the time. I pretty sure it's due to a glitch in the matrix or something.

Should be much more comfortable than a hammock tent. However I found the bottom of the tent can get cold if there is a wind, no insulation.
yes...the base could get cold. we have only used the tentsile stingray in the summer.

biggest downside to me seems that you want a solid foundation to sleep on and not a sagging/bouncy tent floor. Its like sleeping in a hammock. Chiiling is fine and great but sleeping is a nightmare for you and your back.
it kind of hugs you....you can get it very taught with enough tension on the floor

@djmonkfish In your experience, have you had any issues with back pain? I've been warned about the "hammock effect" causing spine problems over time. These look quite different though, thanks to the geometry and higher tension.
@ProfSimonHolland This one might be on to something! You and Dorothy have fans all over the world, but some are close enough to visit. Putting folks up in the forest keeps them out of your hair. ;)
Hey bud, no problems at all I’m 6’6 and the design is a large part of why I love it. Loads of room and you’re spot on, tension keeps you from becoming a banana backed nightmare and I am a side sleeper to boot.
Most important is achieving equilateral tension. Took as a few sleeps to get it nailed and once you have, you can get quite adventurous with slopes and ground height, which never gets old!
I can’t recommend a rope ladder enough 👌🏻 and as a rule the tent wants to be as high as possible and very taught.
We have a few of tensiles’ tents and a aluminium frame for deserts and moons, all are excellent!
Also sleeping mats are a must for heat insulation in the winter, very little insulation on the bottom just like a hammock. We use sheep skins in ours as they double as chair liners in the evening and also they don’t slide about.
200 grand for a treehouse ? WTF
that's supposedly what the rich payed!
