I saw the Osmond Family in concert in Las Vegas in 1973. I was 14 & had crushes on most of them. Lol! What I remember most is how talented they were musically. The harmonies were amazing, and they all play multiple instruments. At one point they all played saxaphone at the same time. Truly great, talented performers!

I'm so glad you started doing reactions to the Osmonds. Bit of history: two oldest brothers are deaf, which is the reason Alan, Wayne, Merrill, and Jay began singing, to raise money for hearing aids; began singing at Disneyland and later were regulars on the Andy Williams Show; Donny, Marie, and Jimmy followed a little later; they have been in show business for over 60 years; most have retired by now; Alan has multiple sclerosis, Wayne had a brain tumor removed, Jimmy suffered a stroke; they play over 30 instruments; Donny and Marie had a show that ran 4 (?) years; Alan's 5 sons perform as The Second Generation Osmonds (son David also has MS); the 4 original singing Osmonds were in a show called The Travels of Jamie McPheters (not sure that's spelled correctly); Donny performed in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (Listen to him sing Any Dream Will Do). It's from 7 years ago with Maria Friedman and the late Richard Attenborough. I could go on and on, but I'll just sit back, listen, and enjoy the Osmonds! Thank you for your great reactions.

Also because of their oldest brothers all the Osmonds are fluent in ASL. If you watch the behind the scenes footage of Weird Al's "White and Nerdy" (in which Donny Osmond made an appearance as Al's hype man), you'll see Donny fingerspell "ROTFLOL" really fast.

Donny and Marie in their later teen years had a network variety show "The Donny and Marie Show" where they had musical numbers with guests and comedy skits. They had a regular segment on their show where they sang an intro where Marie sang "I'm a little Country" and Donny would answer with "I'm a little Rock and Roll" and they sang duets of each type of song which were covers of popular songs of the time. They were good together and their careers went long after the main group with the older brothers faded away....but the whole family appeared on Christmas Specials singing together and reprising their old act.

Yes I remember there variety show quite. But come on you have to admit that it really was not very good. Actually it was way too Goody Goody for any consideration as far as quality on TV. If you were young when that TV show was on I'm sure you would have liked it and that is the difference between a show standing on its own merits and fans that like anything a certain person does. If you are around 14 years old at the time this show was on TV I'm sure you have great fond memories. To anyone older than that age we generally found it to be just a little bit too Goody Goody.

I watched an interview of the Osmonds where the brothers explained how they could all play so many instruments and dance so well. The family didn’t have a lot of money so each brother went to different types of music lessons and then they would return home and teach the rest of the family what they just learned. They spoke of having to pay close attention in their lessons because their family was depending on them to explain what to do. I remember Alan also took karate lessons and he incorporated some of those moves into their choreography. The plan worked; they all became proficient enough to play multiple instruments although they each specialized on certain ones. Any way you look at it, they’re incredibly gifted but they invested a ton of sweat equity by practicing. They have such a work ethic. They’re known as “the one-take Osmonds” because they’re so well rehearsed that they perform perfectly the first time and don’t need more takes.

We were in Vegas last week and went to see Donny Osmond (simply billed as Donny). He did a request segment and One Bad Apple was requested. Donny and his dancers performed it. They all quickly dressed in their 70s retro outfits and the colours each of the brothers represented, with Donny in purple. It was really an amazing show, very entertaining. ✌️🇨🇦

Marie Osmond was only 13 years old when she released her song Paper Roses and it went to number 1 on the country charts. You also need to check out some of Donny’s later songs like Soldier of Love. When it came out, Donny had been so pigeonholed as a teen idol that none of the radio stations would play his newer songs. A station finally started playing Soldier of Love, but they kept it a secret who was singing it. It wasn’t until a tremendous number of people requested the song that they finally told who it was.

Merrill Osmond co wrote this song and was the lead singer. The osmonds were a very talented family. For another talented family during that era, check out the Cowsills who were a mega talented family of all boys except their baby sister Susan. They did a cover of Hair that was phenomenal. Also they had other great sixties style songs like The Rain, the Park and Other Things. The Partridge Family TV show was based on them.

The lead singer is Merrill. In fact, he sings lead on more than 90% of their songs. The other brothers are: Alan, Wayne, Jay and of course Donny. The reason why they are so in sync with their dancing and singing is because they spent 7 years as regulars on The Andy Williams Show, beginning when they were grade school age. You can see their progression as singers, dancers and musicians by watching clips on TH-cam (from the Andy Williams Show). OH, and among them they play more than 30 different instruments.

I knew they played a lot of instruments -- sax, keyboards, guitars, drums, what all else do they play? I got to see them live -- the whole family -- in Oklahoma City, summer of 1984 (or 83?) don't remember for sure, and stayed down in the parking lot until 1 a.m. with a group of other die hards to get to meet them. :) What a thrill!

    • @sydneym4340
      @sydneym4340 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@LoriPeace Some of the other instruments they play are: piano, banjo, percussion, trumpet, trombone, bass (the big standing one), clarinet, violin, bagpipes, tambourine, xylophone, recorder, tuba, flute .... of course not every member plays every one of these instruments. Hope you enjoyed the show in Oklahoma. My first time seeing the entire family perform was Vegas 1978. Saw them again in '79, '80, '81, '82, '83, and '84. Met them countless times, although only met Marie once ... in '79 (Vegas).

@@sydneym4340 I LOVED the show in Oklahoma. I had seats up in the nosebleeds of the stadium. I'd bought myself a telephoto lens for my camera, just special for that occasion, and still could barely see them LOL. Donny arrived by helicopter -- I don't really remember how the others came out.
When I got to meet them at the end of the show, the four older brothers and Jimmy came out first, and they stood around and chatted, signed autographs -- really great. Donny came out next and took off at a fast walk for the limo. One other young woman and I trotted along beside him and got autographs -- I don't know if anyone else did. I was ... disappointed. When I got back to the rest of the group, Marie had come out and was buried. I stuck my arm in with my book, and when I pulled it out, it was signed, presumably by her. LOL
I'd actually taken a "novelization" of Goin' Coconuts, rather than an autograph book or an album for them to sign, because I wanted to stand out from the crowd. I remember Jay looked at it and said, "Where did you get thie?!?" I told him it came out about the same time as the movie, and he laughed and said, "Well, let's hope that never comes out again."

@@sydneym4340 I also got to see Donny in concert in 2002, when he was at the Turning Stone in Central New York. I told my mother-in-law I wanted to go and was planning on getting tickets, and she said, don't worry, I'll get them for you. When my husband and I arrived at the venue, the guy at the door looked at our tickets and said, "I'll show you to your seats." I assumed we'd be back in the nosebleeds again, and I was okay with that -- I mean, free tickets, right? The guy started walking us around way to the far right of the auditorium, and I thought, oh, no, we're going to be behind a pillar or something. Got almost down to the front where there was a couple of rows of tables and chairs and he started walking to the center. My sweet mother-in-law had gotten us seats at a table in the front row, just to the left of the little steps that go up onto the stage. When Donny came out to sing, I was maybe 20-30 feet away from him. JAW DROP Best mother-in-law EVER. Not to mention an amazing concert!

They are, indeed, one o those "genius families". They all play multiple instruments, and Donny has just such an incredible voice, but their harmonies are killers. That's Merrill singing lead, Jay on Drums, Alan on lead guitar, and Wayne on bass.
As well as Marie, the youngest brother often joined in, and they have two older brother, Tom and Virl, who are hearing impaired. They got their start as little boys, Alan, Wayne, Merrill and Jay, performing barbershop quartet music at Disneyland.
. They did a phenomenal cover of the Temptations Can't Get Next to You.

Later in life as a DJ, I went to a ton of concerts, but never experienced this teen idol excitement and energy until...I took my daughter to see NSYNC! All the girls around me were going crazy and they put on a great show with singing and dancing just as high energy and entertaining as the Osmond Brothers did. In later years there was a TV show starring Donny and Marie Osmond. They were fun and funny! Marie recorded country songs and one I really liked was one she recorded with Dan Seals called "Meet Me in Montana" which has been re-recorded by other artists.

That is Merrill singing lead. He has an amazing voice, with an incredible range. You should listen to Crazy Horses if you want a rock and roll sound, or Yo Yo if you want more of a pop sound (and an incredible dance routine).

Interesting story: In 1989, a song was released called "Soldier of Love" (okay song in my view). It was a rock, post disco song by a former child star who producers thought would not be accepted by the current pop audience. A producer named Ettinger did. The artist did not have a record deal with any U.S. company at the time, but they released the song purposely not releasing the name of the artist. Listeners guessed for weeks. Song was in the Top 40. Time came to reveal the artist and Donny was also present on the radio at the reveal. I remember hearing it on my local radio station so it must have been nationwide. The artist was Donny Osmond and it blew everyone's minds. Everybody loved it. He was soon signed to Capitol Records.
Donny Osmond credits Ettinger with re-launching his career by listening to the music and not pre-judging whether a song could be a hit based on the name of the artist.

That's one of my favorite songs by the Osmonds. The live versions of Osmond songs are a must!!!
Next you should listen to "Yo Yo," if you want to keep it in a progressive time line. Follow that with their "Motown Medley" that they played at concerts. The video of "Motown Medley" from their concert at the Ohio State Fair in 1972 is good. After that, do "Crazy Horses," which is sung by Jay, the drummer, along with Merrill, who is normally the lead singer. "Crazy Horses" was recorded when Donny is older and doesn't have the high-pitched voice anymore and doesn't sing the co-lead much.
The Osmonds are Mormons and their religion requires young men to spend a year as missionaries for their church and reaching out to others, like the Jehovah Witnesses. Because of their popularity, it would have been impossible for them to do that. The church instead agreed to let them make a religious album. That album was called "The Plan." There's a promotional video with a medley of songs from the album on TH-cam. All of the songs are religious, though you could mistake some as being about a woman. They ended up converting a lot of people to their church through that album (mainly women). It's actually a rocking album, kind of out there on some songs, like the Beatles' Sergeant Pepper album.
The entire "The Plan" album is also available on TH-cam if anyone wants to listen to the whole thing.

Their sister Marie has a great voice too. It's called Final Osmond Family C9ncert 2008. It's an hour . It's amazing The oldest two actually do sign language for the last 2 songs. It's very touching and shows their talent that was never lost.

Just saw Donny in Las Vegas about ten days ago. He is awesome!!! You have to check out The Osmonds "Crazy Horses." It is the most re-covered Rock n' Roll song in the UK. They are/were so incredibly talented. Donny is touring this Summer too than back to Vegas in the Fall. He is a MUST see for sure.

They all are truly talented! I love them so much and had all their albums. A few years ago Donny won dancing with the Stars! I grew up watching his show with Marie, it was great!

Crazy Horses, very rocking, the drummer Jay sings lead, it's actually about gas guzzling machines. :) For additional high energy dancing while singing, watch Like A Yoyo. And remember, this was the 70s, it was them singing, dancing, and playing the instruments. It is SO good to see you appreciate the boys. Sadly, by the later 70s they were considered uncool. That's when Marie came on the scene and she and Donny were the featured "group" and had their own variety show. I wish the five brothers had been able to continue without doing that. But the motto of the family was "as long as it's an Osmond" so they were gracious about giving up their rocking careers. Of course the boys started in the 50s harmonizing amazingly since they were children.
