    • @sheldoninst
      @sheldoninst 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Not true when it came to “not knowing” that Karen could sing…
      They knew Karen could sing and supposedly she sang almost identically to her mother, who sang in church settings.
      Initially, Karen was a fill-in drummer and always sang behind her drums.. the main issue the brother Richard and the producer (some say it was the bass player) saw was that when Karen initially sang at a higher pitch, they thought she sounded the same as so many other female singers.
      Looking for a tone that would set her apart, at the suggestion of the her brother and those around her, they experimented with Karen trying different pitches and when they played back versions of songs with Karen singing at a lower pitch, that’s when they had their “ah ha!” moment and from then on, the rest is history as they say.
      One can hear Karen sing in a generic higher pitch female voice performing behind her drums at an early local TV show when she was a mere 17 years old (it’s here on TH-cam). Interestingly later in her career just before passing, Karen spent her own money to produce a solo album with music that more or less mimicked the disco-ABBA-Grease soundtrack sound that was prevalent in the early 80s where she sings in a more generic high pitch and sounds pretty generic… of course this generic sound was rejected by the brother and record label that it was shelved and eventually released posthumously.

    Karen was 21 years old when she sang this song. What is amazing is that Karen did this entire song in one take. Through her own vulnerability she really felt the emotion of every single word. That is what you experience with every Carpenter song. The masterful composition of her brother Richard arranging the orchestration around Karen’s rich, full, pitch perfect contralto voice.

In this pre-computer era, music bands were composed of a group of people who played various instruments; they coordinated with each other to play the composition. This was one of the greats of their decade.

    Inna you know talent. Im in my 60s and remember Carpenters well. Herb Alpert heard Karen's voice on a demo in 1969 and signed her brother, Richard, and her to A&M records. Karen received 3 or 4 Grammys in the 70s and sold over 80 million records by 1982. She was 1975 rock drummer of the year according to Playboy. KC had the most beautiful voice-ever, and perhaps THE best female vocalist-ever, because she compels you to listen as she sings in perfect pitch to you, not at you, with emotion and enunciation. No auto-tune or gimmicks. No professional voice or drum instruction. She was known by the studios as 'one take'. She rarely, if ever, did more than one take of any song. She was also the ONLY female harmony/background voice in all her songs. She was truly born with an incredible singing talent. Documentaries point out the accolades to her voice, such as, Paul McCartney said she had the most angelic voice after hearing her sing 'Ticket To Ride'. John Lennon ran into her at an LA restaurant and told her "you have a fabulous voice, luv". Supposedly Frank Sinatra stated that Karen was the only singer he'd pay to hear. I recommend songs such as, Yesterday Once More, Solitaire, This Masquerade, Need To Be In Love, Hurting Each Other, Only Yesterday, I Can Dream Cant I, Crescent Noon, Ordinary Fool, Close To You, We've Only Just Begun, A Place To Hideaway, and A Song For You. KC never knew true love. One of her few friends included Dionne Warwick. 5'3" KC really lost weight, due to anorexia, in earnest beginning in 1975. She died in Feb 1983 at age 32 due to heart complications from anorexia

    Karen Carpenter has the voice of melted chocolate. 'Top of the World' was the very first tune that 'did something to me' when I was a young child. I can still remember it coming on the radio, probably when it was first released around 1972 and me looking at my parents wondering why it wasn't having the same effect on them.

    No vocal runs, no screaming, no whistle register.... Karen doesn't need any of that. That woman was born with the best voice of anyone who ever sang a note and there has never been one like her.. There also will never be. That she was an excellent drummer was just nothing short of a second miracle. She conveyed so much emotion in her voice that it feels like she got a leased line to our hearts through our ears, and poured pure emotion through it...

    It goes without saying that Karen Carpenter has one of the best voices that anyone could ever hope to hear. So resonant!
    Glad someone FINALLY complimented and fully appreciated the orchestral arrangement. Richard Carpenter at his very best.

    Great music like this IS timeless! This song gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. Welcome to the fabulous 1970s, when songs were of excellent and tuneful quality. Analog recording had warmth that digital cannot duplicate.

    They had tons of hits.. Her voice was like butter, on every song they did. She was also ranked #5 of all drummers in the world at one point, but the industry made her kind of give it up for commercial reasons as the band became more and more popular. In the video rainy days and Mondays, after the couple of pics, they go live to the studio, and you can see she's playing the drums. Crazy. Thank you. 😊

    Karen Carpenter had one of the most angelic voices ever. Every time she picked up a microphone she made magic.
    She also had a tragic life, cut short way too soon and she us dearly missed.

    Just a tragic and unnecessary loss. I was only seven when Karen passed, but it still haunts me. Just one of the greatest voices ever. So rich but so wrapped in pain. What a wealth you have ahead: We've Only Just Begun, Close to You, Solitaire, Goodbye to Love, Yesterday Once More, Rainy Days and Mondays, For All We Know, I Won't Last a Day Without You... Just hit me right now: I would have loved a Karen Carpenter/Scott Walker duet...

    Karen had one of the best voices to have ever blessed the world with her sound. Karen left us too soon, RIP. It's been said that the angels rejoiced when Karen arrived in Heaven - they had their new lead singer!

    Most of the Carpenters songs are from the 70's but their music is timeless ! "We've Only Just Begun" and "Close to You" were also huge hits for the Carpenters =)

    Karen Carpenter was the greatest female vocalist that I've ever heard. As a child of the 70s, I listened to their music for hours and hours. Of course, we cannot discount her brother, Richard, was is a musical genius. He did all of the arrangements and played keyboards, and did some of the writing. They were unbelievably talented.

    They’re a duo - Brother/Sister. Biggest duo of the 70’s. Karen could play drums and her singing brought you to tears. Her Brother is a musical genius.

    Karen Carpenter and her brother Richard put out some of the best music of the 60s and 70s. She passed too young. She played drums and had to be talked into singing. There was an actual band playing behind them. She played drums and her brother played piano/organ.

    If you pay close attention, you will notice that she doesn't always breathe when you expect her to. She conserves her breath for the most powerful lines of the song, to make sure that you're hanging on every word. She goes for some pretty long periods between breaths. Most vocal coaches will teach you cheat techniques to sneak in a breath during long intervals so that the listener doesn't notice, but Karen doesn't do that. She has absolute control of her air, which is pretty amazing considering her only formal musical training was as a drummer and percussionist, not as a vocalist. .

    • @carolhesterberg7526
      @carolhesterberg7526 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      She DID have some vocal training while at Cal State Long Beach. Choir director Frank Pooler admitted, though, that he didn't want to change her natural talent too much. Excessive formal training would not have been of much benefit to her since she was already so good without it.

    The Carpenters are my all-time favorite group. Their music is timeless. (The group is a brother-sister act along with a touring band of musicians.) Karen Carpenter is known for having one of the best voices ever. Her brother Richard is a classically trained pianist who composes, arranges and sings harmony.

    Inna, you are a very intelligent and lovely young lady. Thank you for exploring the remarkable "Superstar" written by Leon Russell and impeccably performed by Karen and Richard Carpenter. The Carpenters are deservedly legends. Their music has a universal and timeless appeal which you accurately describe.
