I gave up on drumcorps when they started dancing.

Not so much the dancing I think. I even enjoy that a little... but really when they gave up uniforms. That was too far.

The 1965 Royal Airs. Without question, the finest junior corps to have ever marched. And no - I was never affiliated with them.

They really were a back then.
I was in the IC Dukes of Marlborough.
I was in from second grade till a sophomore in high school it was a pretty big chunk of my life and it was pretty awesome but once I saw a little fairies dancing out on the field with Stage Productions I didn't know what I was watching.
But they are awesome vistes to I have to admit it's all artistic

Historic. I remember their last performance in Detroit MI 1968 VFW Nationals. The 1st place (Kilties) and 5th place Royal Aires were separated by a single point. I was there.

I hope I'm not alone in this, but I cam appreciate both the old and newer styles of drum corps and competitive marching bands. Now recently I've been a little aghast at corps abandoning their signatures and uniforms but I can appreciate the electronics and even the choreo and dancing. I love both styles but I wish they kept the uniforms.

AHHHHHH so refreshing to see the good ole days of Drum Corps when amplification wasn't necessary. I still love Drum Corps even with the amplification, talking, and singing, although I think that detracts from the performance, if I wanted to hear all that, I could turn on the radio. But I do understand they need to update things with the times.

Simply the greatest reunion corps ever! Never again. Other reunion corps (possibly the 27th Lancers being an exception) don't compare, although many were/are great.

Gene VandenBosch was the main drum major and a music instructor. With out him there would not have been a musically sounding reunion corps. His name was omitted from the announcements by a mean spirited manager. Just so all know his great contribution to this wonderful corps.

      From the mean spirited manger:
By the way if it wasn't for her DCI wouldn't have even consider letting us on the field or recognize the best of the best corp directors of the 50 & 60's. not only Sie.
Chris you forgot to mention the things you did to undermine the corp more than once which caused the corp once again to fold, take pride in yourself! just so you know some of his great contribution that he has made to destroy the history of the Royal Airs.
Gene was never given the position of drum major or Music instructor, Without Truman there wouldn't have been the musically sounding reunion corps Gene did play apart in that. He was appreciate as much as everyone else that made contribution in fielding the best reunion corp without expecting any more than our accomplishments and the pride of our hard work.
Only the original Royal Airs Drum major were asked. By choice of the staff.
The Royal Airs appreciate all those that came together from every were to Honor Sie. Here again you tried to tarnish this with your action.
With my whole heart I would like to say thank you to all that came together that made memories that will be ours for every. Without every corp of that era could we have ever accomplish what we once again did . In gratitude

Miss the great days of drum corps ( 1960's ) still get to a few shows in WI, sadly not many shows or corps as it was back then in IL and WI. Kenosha Kingsmen for 5 years and Mariners one season, senior corps was great fun ! I don't like all the strange back ground BS, props as well as electric BS ! GO ARMY NRA USA

@sonac04 You will have to forgive me, I'm old. The fever that is drum corp never fades. I give the marchers today all the credit, I could not do what they do. The pace would give me a heartattack. I marched with the Toronto Optimists 58 - 62 then aged out. All the best DAN

@grandtrumpeter - they didn't need to compete - they won just by showing up decades after their last competition - hopefully everyone will find something that will still ring true 45 years afterwards

  • @sonac04

@snellgrovedan Thats unfortunate. But I would assume that it wasnt drum corps when they started letting women march, or when the corps were allowing non white people to march. Was it drum corps when they grounded the timpany and the bells? Things change. The heart and passion is still there. The only thing that is different is that the people who are involved want to express what they are doing. If your way of Drum corps was still done today no kid in there right mind would do it.

You're out of your mind, that's the dumbest and most narrow minded comment on traditional drum corps that's ever been put forth here. Young people today who are dedicated and talented musicians and marchers would absolutely welcome an opportunity to participate in traditional drum corps. Witness the Boston Crusaders, their members currently play the traditional arrangements of the sixties and seventies, and the Boston Crusaders music charts of today. The corps members of today welcome both the old traditional corps style and the current corps trends, musical and artistically of the present. Wake up and smell the coffee!
