From VA then and now. But saw the Cavies at Legion Natls in DC in '66 and Boston in '67. To my mind, those 2 shows were the epitome of classic drum & bugle corps - both Jr & Sr, for all time. I was inspired by the Cavs' snares and tried to learn their repertoire. Used to listen to Fleetwood recordings for hours on end with my sticks and practice pad. (Still have recordings). Thank you sincerely for giving me one of the first and most important goals of my life! To play along with your line.

The 1960s were the best times for drum corps.

For my money, the '66 Cavies' version of "Bully" is still the best ever.

I was in an east coast corps and never really heard any midwest corps. They are really good. I miss the sound of the old corps.

Agree with Fran Haring, can't think of any arrangement of Bully better than this. It Ain't necessarily So superbly performed. Sal Ferrara was a genius as an arranger, an all time great. To the guy who dissed the Cavs in other comment: You kiddin' me bro? They're an all time great DCI corps and one of the all time victorious as well.

Those were the days ! I remember this show, it was sponsored by the Royal Emperors and often held at the old UW of Milwaukee stadium. CAVS used Holton Bugles and Ludwig Classic Bugles Go Kenosha Kingsmen

I played snare drum in this show. In that drum solo after Bully we flipped our sticks down the line one after the other. Marching on the end, I flipped first and was terrified in every show, but nobody ever missed, no sticks dropped.

Was that something you guys added? Or did McCormick write that in?

@@landonedwards7504 The stick flipping was Larry’s creation, as part of that solo. I baulked and said, “You’ve got to be kidding!” He wasn’t kidding. So we practiced the solo with the flipping and got very good at it. In fact, in 1966 and 1967, nobody dropped a stick.

Man, this makes me miss Marching Band....mid to late 70s and, University in the early 80s! I loved playing the Baritone (even though we played the traditional horn in Marching Band). I believe I never had so much fun, as I did my Freshman year, as I got to be in a Marching Band that was known for power (hard to explain how awesome it felt when I heard that first note played by our Band....I couldn't stop smiling lol)....except for the 2 years I was a Drum Major and, made Head Drum Major my Sr year! I was even even a University Marching Band Drum Major and, that was a whole new experience lol. I just loved Band period but, when it was Football season, Marching Band was my favourite....I even loved marching in Parades lol. Being in an award winning Band (street and field marching), was just icing on the cake. I still wonder how I would have done, if I had tried out for a Drum and Bugle Corps...but, that ship has looong since sailed lol but, I still love to watch videos of them on TH-cam. I have always been a Scout fan (I was even an Infantry Scout in the Army lol). I love their look and sound.

And today April 21st 2023, we no longer have real drum and bugle Corps, in my opinion DCI is the reason for the demise of what was one of the greatest youth activities throughout the United States and Canada they have turned the activity into a marching band competition superimposed on a three ring circus. I have nothing against marching bands they are great, but I wish Drum Corps International would change its name to, marching band International just call it what it really is today. Former member of the Floyd Bennett golden eagles from Brooklyn New York 1960 and 1961, former member of the Long Island Sunrisers 1964 through 1968, back when we still had Real Drum and bugle Corps may they all rest in peace.

Marched with the Cavaliers up to '69, and there were good & bad individuals in every corps but I guarantee you if there was a crown for "hoodship" , it
      would lie with the Vanguard!
