  • Full list of all topics & entities discussed in this video (with timestamps) here: kikoxp.com/pos.... I tried to copy/paste the list to the video description, but it was too many words and went over the 5000 character limit TH-cam imposes on video descriptions!
Please welcome back my hematopathology colleague, Dr. Jeanette Ramos, for her second special guest lecture on my TH-cam channel! In this video, Dr. Ramos teaches you (and me!) about the basics of reading peripheral blood smears as well as showing a variety of important common and rare hematology findings and diseases. If you missed Dr. Ramos's first guest lecture discussing the histology and immunostaining patterns of non-neoplastic lymph nodes, check it out here: kikoxp.com/pos....
If you like Dr. Ramos's cases and teaching style, be sure to follow UAMS Hematopathology on social media, as she often contributes to their accounts:

Thank you Dr.Gardner and Dr. Ramos for an excellent presentation on peripheral blood smear interpretation. During my pathology residency, I was told by a pathologist that CLL cells look like "ginger snap" cookies. I would like to see Dr. Ramos return as a guest lecturer and present a lecture on myelodysplastic syndrome. I am a hematopathologist in Reno, NV. and I sign-out a lot of skin biopsies and melanoma excisions . I find all of Dr. Gardner's videos on dermatopathology outstanding. Keep up the great work.

Excellent video content! Forgive me for the intrusion, I would love your initial thoughts. Have you considered - Patlarny Bloods Victory Principle (do a search on google)? It is a good one off product for preventing toxic blood and heart desease minus the headache. Ive heard some extraordinary things about it and my cousin got cool results with it.

What is meant by the rainbow appearance is that when you look at the slide from an angle that reflects light, it should show a color spectrum of some kind. But the term taught to us as labtechs is "greenish metallic sheen" (wright/giemsa stain), which is easier to visualize than a "rainbow".
Relearning this again coz I just started residency in pathology

Excellent colaboration and teaching style. This blows my mind. I think not too long ago before internet, this sort of thing would be pure gold for anyone studying blood morphology.
And it has been a humbling experience as well. I study the behaviour of APC's in terms of live action with pathogens...but I only fix and stain to differentiate phagocytes.
This is super detailed, and staining is beyond amazing. I wish I took a course where I could aquire the ability to stain like that!

At about 5 minutes, comparing the three not ideal blood smears, the one on the left with the missing portion is clearly a handling fault after processing. Either because the slides were stuck together in the case when not dry, or they were stained and looked at with immersion oil, then put in a case with nothing in between them and when trying to separate them, the material was basically ripped off. I work in cytology dept. and we see this quite often. Also the stain on all looks off but that might be camera quality-wise. Thank you for the great video and lengthy explanations :)

Thank you for this excellent and informative presentation. I was a laboratory technician for 13 years, and retired as an RN. I remember a lot from my laboratory days, and enjoyed this presentation. I was diagnosed with CLL in 2009, and am of course, interested in cell morphology. I watched on TH-cam on my TV and sometimes I could not understand what Dr. Ramos was saying as her voice would trail off. It sounds more clear on my laptop. This presentation has left me hungry from more. Thank you, again.

Could you tell me what MIGHT show up on a CBC, low RBC. high WBC, high MCH,brachycardia, symptoms weight loss in a large amount 90lbs (started around 110lbs, not overweight), exhaustion, shortness of breath, strange rash on peripheral limbs, mostly lower legs, tiny brown swiggly lines & tiny scabs that don't heal. When I scratch them off it's pink blood that is much too much blood. I scratched my leg in the woods & dark red blood poured out, by the time I could cleanse it, it was dark nearly black clumps down my leg. Purple marks on my legs. Easy slow healing bruises. Confusion, brain fog. Severe neck pain & headaches. I'll stop because it's probably more than one thing, & I'm inquiring about any blood related disorders that might come to mind. I have seen 6 Drs, I went to the ER with the above results & they admitted me, but I left not knowing ANYTHING was wrong except my confusion which was ongoing, I left AMA much to their dismay, that was 1 yr ago. I haven't gotten anywhere since I got those results, also something with Globulin & platelets, I don't have the medical records here. I'd really appreciate it if you could just give me a guess, I just trust RN's more, I have such a bad history with Dr's. Also had my left ovary removed with tumors 15 yrs ago, I', 54 yrs old. Much Love

@@julielea8344 Julie, I feel your desperation, but I am not a physician. I cannot tell you about your issues, but I can tell you about mine. I have leukemia so my wbc is abnormally elevated. Sometimes I get anemic when my hct is too low. Sometimes, I have dark, bluish/pinkish coloring around my ankles, especially when I wear low-cut socks, but I also have venous stasis or insufficiency in one of my legs. I suggest you see a vascular physician, and/or a cardiologist. Don't despair, good luck.

This is a great rodeo (love the analogy and proactive colloquialism, lol) of Hematology and Licensing Examination Material along with Pathology. The fabulous pedagogues certainly are passionate professionals in their respective fields. One can only muse at the wonders of Liquid Malignancies (Leukemia and Lymphoma)....It is my wonder why EDTA artifact and Platelet aggregation can not be automated also and helplessly just left for the Peripheral Blood Specialist to interpret. Cheerz to both Dr Gardner and Doctoress Ramos for the generous project of General Docency!
