  • Hello everyone we are back with another deep dive into the Deus Ex series. This time looking at the 1st entry in the Eidos Montreal games, Deus Ex Human Revolution. So lets go all the way back to the beginning, to when human augmentation was an emerging and controversial science and the Illuminati was old and powerful.

If only I can boot this game again without remembering all the events that took place, what a blast it was 👍🏻

Dude you make some really good quality retrospectives it's really surprising you don't have more views.

This was my first Deus Ex game. I can't say it gripped me the way other games have, but I did have a fun time playing it. I don't think I ever actually finished it.

Greetings again. I remember when I was hyped to hear about the return of the Deus Ex series in 2010. A year later, I watched walkthroughs and gameplay and was impressed with Human Revolution. The game expanded mechanics from the original Deus Ex while adding new ones. I still don't get the hacking minigame, though. The story was decent, too. As usual, conspiracy theories involving secret societies remain par for the course. If I were to tell today's gamers about the Deus Ex series today, Human Revolution is a good starting point if they choose to start playing the games. Of course, the original is still where most of my knowledge lies, so I often talk about the first game when discussing the series with my relatives.
Hope that you celebrated Deus Ex's 22nd anniversary. I played Invisible War again back in June.

Yeah as great as of is this has aged much better. Still there's some promising remake projects in the works for the original so who knows down the line.

@@arkham666 No doubt that you heard that the Deus Ex series now belongs to Embracer Group. No word on any future Deus Ex titles, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
      How'd you celebrate Deus Ex's 22nd year?

This game was my introduction to the franchise, and continues to be one of my favorite games of all time. It’s so good that it inspired me to play games that were two decades old for christ’s sake (I finally decided to do a full series playthrough over the past few months). I can definitely see why Deus Ex is such an unbeatable game for those who got to enjoy it back in 2000, but Human Revolution is the game that started it all for me and it gets my loyalty (plus I think it benefits greatly from the technological advances in gaming between it and the original). Loving watching these retrospectives as I finish up the run with Mankind Divided. Fingers crossed that the rumors of a new entry into the franchise are true! Would love to see a chapter that bridges the gap between Adam Jensen and JC Denton.

Your first elder scrolls is your favorite. I think it's the same for this too. It really is hard to make an unbiased call on which is better so I'm glad to let my nostalgia play a part in the final process.
I'm still not optimistic about another Deus Ex and even if they did make another I wonder if it would be Adam again or if they'd make a new hero to try to grab a broader audience.

It just occurred to me that the intro sequence after the prologue was a nod to the intro of Project Snowblind.

You can actually finish the game without killing anyone, EXCEPT for the bosses. Even saving Malik is doable full stealth + pacifist (not easy though)
And yeah, China in this game is incredible, even Detroit is pretty good too but China steals the show, big time.

Man I really *hate* the melee mechanics of HR. They should've just went with the way Invisible War and the first game did it and let me aim my blows instead of being "instant takedown that always succeeds, introduces a cutscene that looks "cool" and costs one energy". Instant immersion breaker and feels stupid as hell. Also, the game punishes fatal takedowns to the point that they might as well not be a feature at all, considering that they both make more sound and do not grant that xp bonus. Allowing a pacifist approach is one thing. Forcing the player to go down that road to max out XP is something else entirely. I think takedown/kill xp was the biggest mistake they made with the game.

Excellent video, man. The encounter with “Anonymous X”, the wannabe spy and faux anti-corporate activist is some of funniest writing I’ve seen in a game. Funny how you can be all professional and play along with the dude’s LARPing, or you can fuck him over and teach him a lesson in street smarts. I always screw him over because the dude’s a charlatan and hypocrite

They're are made of metal and built into him. Changing them requires machines and surgeons etc, switching out a nano augmentation is a matter of injecting new nanite colonies.

i just finished a second playthrough after several years also. just a great game, no two ways about it. i think it's the best of the modern immersive sims (dishonored, prey, etc), and just my favorite game overall.
i've had trouble with the first game though. i've tried to get into it twice and have gotten stuck. i don't know how exactly to explain what the issue is, but it almost feels like a slog to play. maybe it's just harder than HR? 🤷‍♂️

    • @arkham666
      @arkham666  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It's a lot harder. There are many quality of life improvements to HR such as maps, objective markers, better code storing etc. It's just the way games were back then. Much less hand holding.
      Thanks for the comment.

    • @adamwhite4858

It took me three starts and stops to finally get through the game and I think the difficulty was the main issue. One of those things where when the gameplay finally starts to feel natural, the game really sings, but there was definitely a fair amount of frustration getting to that point.
