    Sir, you're a life saver. I'm 27 years old and had footage of me when I was 3 months old. I was rewinding the tape so that I could digitalize it into my computer, when the film inside the VHS then broke. I followed your video and was able to fix the tape, and successfully copied the footage off of the aging VHS. Thank you!

      Same exact thing just happened to me. My dad wants all the old home movies on DVD and he's paying me to convert them. Just nearly lost some 33 year old footage due to the clear rewinding strap breaking. Got about 90% finished with the repair, but reassembly was daunting, this video worked perfectly.

      Do you know how to FIX a VHS Tape that has the white part of it's beginning not connected to the black film?

    • @SnazzyZubloids
      @SnazzyZubloids 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just use some tape.

    • @DrizzlingDrizzlers
      @DrizzlingDrizzlers 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Colin Mulder - Use some scotch tape, but be careful when rewinding with your VCR. If you rewind too far, the scotch tape might come loose and ruin the rest of your tape. After you've scotch taped it back in place, manually rewind the tape with your hand, not your VCR, using the method that the video shows at 7:26. Put the cassette back together and stick it in your player. Be sure to push "Record" on whatever device your copying it to (PC, DVR, DVD) and then hit play on the VCR, because you're not going to want to have to rewind the VHS tape again.
      That's actually where my tape broke. Not in the middle, but at the very end, but I was able to fix it and copy it off.

    If you want this splice to last, use splicing tape, not scotch tape. Scotch tape will blead the adhesive to adjacent tape and foul you video head. This will work for a while. Splicing tape does not blead adhesive onto adjacent tape.

    Thanks for the video. I had to do this a couple of years ago. I was transferring a friend of mine's family videos on VHS to DVD. One of the VHS tapes broke. I took it apart without watching any TH-cam videos or instructions on Google. I opened the tape up the wrong way and stuff fell out that I never could get back in. I got worried until I thought of a way to fix the problem. First I watched videos and Googled how to do it. Then I got an old VCR tape of mine and took the old tape out of it and put the family video in that case. Spliced it together and it worked great. Transferred it to DVD and advised my friend to throw that old VCR tape in the garbage. Just the other day I was about to do the same thing for another friend. Put the tape in the VCR and it immediately ate it. I had to cut it out of the VCR. Splicing them together will screw up a section of no more than 10 seconds of the original video, maybe even less than that.

  • @Tomsonic41

    I have spliced many videotapes in my time, and do agree it's a temporary fix. If you leave it, the sticky tape will eventually decompose and turn to dust - and that won't do the heads any good when it goes through! Also, if a tape has broken at the very beginning or end like in your example, I like to splice to the clear leader. That way, the machine will stop the tape before the splice touches the video head.

    I wish I had watched your presentation before I watched someone else's. Unlike your's, it omitted a warning to avoid "springing" the spring. Yes, mine popped out. But, after studying a freeze frame in your presentation, so I could see where the spring had to be re-installed, I was able to get it back where it belonged (eventually). Your instructions were very clear and easy to follow. I've spliced a lot of audio tape back in "my day"; but, I needed your help with VHS. Thanks.

    Glad I found this, this is exactly what I was needed! Thank you very much!
    My question is: do I have to open the cassette if we cut the TRANSPARENT, ending part of the tape?
    .
    Last night the player (which works perfectly fine) bit the tape in while spat the cassette out. (most likely the tape wasn't clean, its an old, but official release, not a home video). The player designed too tricky and boxy and couldnt find a way to reach the inside, so we cut the tape to get it out and separate the cassette and the player. fortunately we could cut the transparent part of the tape, at the end of it, and not the content-filled part.
    Also, are we sure the common scotchtape (or whatever it's called in english) is safe for this use? As I know that type of tape tends to let the glue go and flow after some time.

  • @damian9303
    @damian9303 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah you can’t damage a VCR by playing a wrinkled tape like that, at most it’s plausible that the strain would cause the tape to split depending on the type used which would likely cause the player to panic and immediately eject.

    Hi hope you're well
    I did this, but had a look the tape at the end , is shiny from the inside and less on the outside, I don't know how this is possible but I think it may have gone the wrong way since all the years of being left broken off, it's from 1993, recorded by a videographer at the time. So anyway as I inserted the tape into the VHS, it was making a slight crumbling sound, on the screen I could only see black, with a buzzing sound, only at one moment I heard some old music from that tape but other than that it's still the same, it's really important, I hope you can help.

    Done something like this years ago on vhs tape, its tricky getting the line up of each end of the vhs tape onto the scotch tape but as stated in this video have to be careful when taking apart the vhs tape that no parts scatter or comes out of the roller paths, I actually have two mini dvd vhs tapes I have to fix more tedious then the big vhs tapes but wanting to use more durable repair tape can get on ebay don't like using scotch tape being its very easy to snap or rip again.

    I don't reccomend this for trying to save old TV shows you recorded that are NOT replaceable as you loose the footage on the "bad" section, I instead try to restraighten the wrinkled parts in that case. Also as VHS does eventually go away forever, I reccomend getting a thing called VCR 2 PC (It's a special VHS player that hooks by USB right to a PC or LapTop) You can then play it and save it to your PC or LapTop (I use a 64 Bit PC running Win 7 Ultimate and use NERO Platinum 2017 to capture the video.)
