    Take aways
    1. Step scores are important
    2. Take step 3 before applying
    Why ? Coz of the programs board passing rate
    3. Think like the program director admitting you
    Hmm Img , x scores , don’t know about his school, culture, will he fit here, will he pass the boards
    What you should do ?
    a) open match a resident and get your list
    b) look into schools img history
    c) your schools alumni in the program is a big advantage - ask them for insider advice / gen help
    d) apply to those schools first apply to many
    4. Lors, personal letter
    5. At electives
    a)Come early , look sharp, impress everyone ?
    Coz everyone’s watching you and all of them will be asked - how was your experience with this guy + the Sr comes 30 min early and has all the responsibility so when he sees you early too(+)
    b)Be vulnerable , ask for help with presentations - present to batch mates,r be good at presenting
    c) ask yourself - how can help this team do better
    Interpersonal skills, communication, teamwork etc

    • @matcharesident
      @matcharesident  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It is becoming more common, especially for IMGs. It is also a good way to help address potential weaknesses or red flags in candidacy (multiple attempts, older graduation, etc..). Step 3 is required for anyone on an H-1B visa as well.

    US-IMG vs non-US IMG exactly what kind of difference does that make in terms of matching? Also, is this something that I can cover with “networking” i.e. doing clinical rotations in the programme?

    • @matcharesident
      @matcharesident  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Completing clinical rotations and networking is definitely very helpful! Factors such as USCE, quality of medical school, and background CV experiences play a large role as well, rather than just US vs. Non-US. Obviously, those requiring visas will have to apply accordingly!

      Getting a high mark on Step 3 is not as important as making sure you pass it on the FIRST attempt. Otherwise, a passing score has little relevance to programs. They focus more on Step 1 and Step 2CK scores. However, if you are aiming for a very strong Step 3, aim for 245+!

      Taking Step 3 is not a requirement unless you are pursuing an H1B visa. Some programs strongly prefer/like to see Step 3 in some of the following scenarios: You are a certain number of years from med school. You have one or more failures on USMLEs. You have low USMLE scores. You do not have USCE. - to name a few.

I will take step 1 during my 4th year, could I possibly squeeze in step 2 and 3 before I apply to Anesthesiology residencies? Step 1 is pass/fail now, but I'll still try to do decent and put it in my CV. I really want to knock step 2 out of the park and possibly do step 3 if it would benefit me at all in anyway. I have no USCE or research publications so far and I have no idea how to get them. I just want to match into Anesthesiology and that's it, it doesn't matter which program for me, I will go anywhere that is US IMG friendly.

    How many rotation does an IMG need to be a strong competitor for residency?

    • @matcharesident
      @matcharesident  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for your question! The answer varies depending on the specialty you're applying to as well as other factors including where you complete your rotations (US-based is preferred by most programs). Besides rotations/clinical experience, there are many additional factors that can help you be a strong competitor for residency in the US. These include your Step Scores (including any failures), the experiences found on your CV, strong (specialty-specific) US-based Letters of Recommendation, a perfected and persuasive Personal Statement, as well as the overall strength of your ERAS Application as a whole, and more.

      what im referring to more is within the UK. I understand there is some discrepancy maybe with studying medicine in the UK vs in uzbekistan for example... but considering UK medical schools are very highly regarded, does it really matter if you went to Manchester, UCL or Oxford?

    I have a doubt, basically, if you apply to match after 2022 irrespective of if you had a 3 digit step 1 or wrote in the pass-fail era, the program will see it as only pass-fail for everyone ? or show 3 digits of those who have and pass of who wrote past 2022?

    • @matcharesident

      Once the score reporting change is in effect, ALL USMLE transcripts will only show pass/fail for Step 1, regardless of the date the exam was taken, according to current information and expectations.

    Also does the usmle step pass and fail reduces chances of IMG...should we sit step 1 before it becomes pass n fail?

    • @matcharesident
      @matcharesident  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The USMLE score tends to provide IMGs with an edge in the program selection process. So for IMGs that have the confidence of scoring high in the USMLE will lose that chance when the scores convert to pass/fail but then the focus will be shifted on the USMLE Step 2 CK and your entire application most likely. Your basic sciences and clinical grades will most likely matter (if applicable). If you are an achiever and know well that you will have a high USMLE step 1 score then take it as soon as possible and apply this season (2020-21) if possible.

      Ophthalmology is a highly competitive specialty that is not typically very IMG friendly. It also requires high USMLEs. An IMG would need strong specialty specific LoRs in addition to being a relatively recent grad (although we do not have a specific year, since each program is different. B/c ophthalmology is not very IMG friendly, we do not have data nor minimum requirements for such programs).

    • @matcharesident
      @matcharesident  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure if Dr. Orssareh is able to see this question. The Match A Resident answer is: All candidates have a chance and for that reason, there are no restrictions on the year of graduation by the ECFMG or official organizations. Yes, it is challenging for older candidates but there are different aspects of your application and clinical preparation that would make your year of graduation less noticeable to the programs. Some programs actually purposely choose to have at least one older candidate in their program. Prepare well, pay attention to your Letters and personal statement. Apply early and choose the specialty that best suits your situation.
