Dude, strong agree. I'd say it's probably my most "controversial" skateboarding opinion that people place way too much emphasis on board feel, or aren't fully articulating what they mean by it in regards to "comfort", which is also subjective.
I can't love skating low profile vulc shoes enough... BUT! LOL after skating some FP shoes and their insoles in my Vans, I can't help but notice the difference. Now I'm looking for a good vulc shoe I can consistently get cheaply so I can keep using my FP molded insole in multiple pairs...
Vans Slip On are wonderful, especially when they lace up and mold your feet perfectly, and there are no laces that tear all the time! I also use Vans Wayvee, which is also super comfortable and doesn't lose the feel of the board! Excellent video 👟👟🛹😍😍🔥🔥🇧🇷🤟🏽🤟🏽
it blows my mind watching last resort vids and seeing someone like frankie decker or chris milic handle big ass drops and gaps in last resorts without exploding their ankles. part of me thinks they must be putting aftermarket insoles in their shoes, and part of me is just envious of youth. as far as cupsoles go i'd recommend the converse fastbreaks, they are the most vulc-y cupsole
I've skated both the Last Resort VM001 and the Tiago 1010. The Tiagos are probaby the most comfy skate shoes I've ever worn, but I only skate them during recovery periods and backyard work (I still have them!). They're a bit too poofy/box-y for my liking when I'm in the full swing of things. On the other hand, I really liked the Last Resorts in terms of feel and aesthetics. As I return from a knee injury and move into my 40s, I'm not sure how viable they'll be for the concerns you mention. When I did skate them, I wasn't in great condition to do a lot of flip tricks, so I don't remember having any bad primo experiences. A skated the Converse Fastbreaks recently (thinner cupsole) and really liked those. I grew up mostly skating cupsoles and didn't get into vulcs until the last few years, so those felt right at home. I have some Asics laying around too, but I haven't had a chance to skate those yet. Comfy shoes to walk around in though.
I've been in the process of trying several different New Balance shoes. I tried the 1010s like you did. Like you, I found that the rubber on the sides really seemed to grab and helped my ollies. I have an ankle that gives me a lot of grief and don't like the shoes that have a tongue or anything that interferes with the top of my ankle. The ones I skated were the black and teal ones. The tongue was more stiff than I wanted it to be. I have another pair of them in teal and gray and the tongue on those wasn't as stiff. I thought the 1010s had too much padding on the bottom. The board feel wasn't the greatest, but, also, it felt like they were unstable because of the extra padding. I also tried the 440s. They are cupsole, but, are minimal. I like those, but, the problem that I had when them is that I wore the sole out really fast. I was using Mob grip tape, but, switched to Mini Logo which is less abrasive. Mob just wears shoes out too fast. I was using Adidas Busenitz Vulc IIs previously, which I like. They have good board feel and a minimal tongue, which I like. I also tried the New Balance 480s. It appears that the soles are thicker on those than the 440s. It looks like they will hold up better. They have more padding from front to back, but, not as spongy as the 1010s. Those seemed like more of a middle ground. The next ones I'm going to try are the New Balance 574 vulcs. They are thin and have good board feel in the toe area, but, are jacked up a little and have heel protection in the back. Those seem like they will be good. Also, I have some 600s which are similar in that there is more padding in the back. The 574s look like the tread is too thin in the front, like the 440s. So, if you are using abrasive grip, I think they would wear fast. The 600s have a sole more like the 480s. I think the sole will hold up better on those. The only thing I'm not sure I like about the 600s is the rubber on the sides is only in the front and back and not in the middle. So, it looks like it would wear the side of the shoe out more. Christian Flores, who does a lot of skate shoe reviews gave the 600s and 9/10 in one of his latest round up of all the shoes he skated last year. I think one can't say whether vulc or cup sole is better. It just depends on the specific shoe. Some cupsole are minimal on the bottom and are basically the same board feel-wise. Assuming the soles hold up in the front on the 574s, I think those will be good ones. They have a little bit of arch support also and just seem to be comfortable on the bottom of my feet. The 600s are very comfortable also.
Really appreciate detailed comments like this. I was not a fan of the 440v1 but do like the 440v2 like I've said in other comments here (I'm not a bot or shill I promise). Wanted to try the 480s but they were constantly on back order; looks like availability is better now, but I also don't need a pair right now lol. The 1010s just didn't work for me, gave me pain in the arch area and the heel fitment was awkward and I did not see that improving with more break-in. The 574 vulc interested me but vulcs are a hard no for me at this point. It's funny - NB also makes a 574 "walking" shoe that has a partial suede upper that I considered trying to skate - If there were an additional layer I'd think about it more. I still might...
Maybe I need to check out those 600's too, appreciate that. The 440v2 thankfully ended my shoe madness for a while. Your comment about the type of grip was similar to my experiences - I'm on mini logo grip on one board but am not a fan, but do like that it's not destroying my shoes like mob or jessup(sp?) even after trying to sand them down. Maybe I should try to get used to it more but sometimes I feel like my grip just washes out during my pivots but it could be the shoe as well.
@@mhtate3626 I have the 440v2s also, but, haven't skated them. The ones I have are stiffer than the v1s. There is more padding in the sole. It seems to go front to back. For just wearing around, I found them less comfortable than the v1s. I think it's because of the extra padding. It makes them a tighter fit. Also, the material used in the tongue was stiff and I really hate anything touching the top of my ankle. They did seem more structured than the v1s. I heard they made the rubber on the bottom a little thicker also, but, it looked like they did a slight of hand and just cut out more rubber between the grooves. On the pair I have, you can literally see the white foam through the rubber on the bottom it's so cut out. I was thinking of filling in the gaps between the tread with shoe gue in the toe area where I normally wear a hole to try to help it out. I think I would burn right through them if I was using Mob grip. Personally, I think if they changed the grip pattern so that the design that is on the heel of the shoe was over the whole bottom of the shoe, rather that just on the back, they would last longer. There would be more rubber that way and less gaps.
@@mhtate3626 Just posted a longer reply, but, apparently TH-cam's idiotic censorship filter filtered it out. Long story short, I was trying to tell you that you can get a lot of these shoes for cheaper at joe's new balance outlet or zumiez.
My ankles are shit - I can roll my ankle just walking down the sidewalk in a typical shoe, but not with NB 1010s. They’re the most stable shoe I’ve ever worn.
Shoes are the condoms of the feet! Curious to see if you go back to slip-ons once that heel bruise is healed up (that was an unintentional play on words)
Love the title! Also great examples for cupsole vs vulc those new balances have super stiff soles ! I think I’ll be sticking to vulcs and then skate cupsoles on occasion. Great video !!!
I'm definitely in the cupsole group, but more power to anyone that prefers Vulcs. I wanted to like the 1010's but the mid foot area did not work with my feet and caused pain. The 440v2's are what I've mostly been using. I did like the Asics Gel Vickka Pro (funnily enough, I found your channel because of these) and Japan Pro but they are just too hard to reliably get a pair of in my size vs some of the other offerings. I've yet to have a shoe (or boot) that didn't require some form of break-in, which is to say I've yet to have a shoe that I could truly skate out of the box, so that may be down to preference as well, just like board feel.
I skate the New Balance 868’s (discontinued but I stock piled them) which are similar to the 1010’s. Used to be vans pros type of guy but had to switch after an injury. Funny I used to think the same as you aesthetically but the cup sole look grew on me.
Those NBs perform different by style but are overall damn robust .. Im like 200lbs n 40something.. n ya I dig em to keep me on the board.. those white/green smooth finish leather are hella sturdy
I'd go with the minimalist vulcs for the optics any day, but my feet and body in general just won't. I was a huge fan of the Evan Smith Chuck knockoffs on DC (which struck me as ironic at the time, that the shoe company responsible for ushering in the tech shoe in the 90s was now making to meet market demand) and bought a couple pairs on clearance. Then my feet just started getting really sore, and I started getting all these other issues, so I switched to Etnies Maranas as my go-to skate shoe. Lately I've been switching it up with the Tiago 808s, which I really like, not just for how they feel, but even visually. Still, if I were in my 20s, I'd be rocking the Last Resorts or actual Chucks all day.
I just got my first board at 31 years old after a lifetime of playing college and pro level soccer. I love catching this channel's content, so relatable and humble and I can't even imagine being able to do any of these tech tricks. @ my ability to balance and change my body’s direction has been really helpful. There’s definitely an advantage in my eye to foot coordination over a beginner as well.
Think wearing boots at work, have made my feet sensitive. Most my pants are on the baggy side. I feel the bulky cups look better…adidas forum adv’s all day!!!…nice vid 🫡
I’m currently on a “hunt” so I’ve just been trying a new shoe every pair. Currently on the same last resorts as you. I like em but they’re too long for me, and if I get em smaller then they become too tight. My Goldilocks is definitely an old skool. And idk how because it’s the polar opposite but I also really like dunks, but it could just be a look good feel good skate good type of thing
When Vans came out with Pop Cush, I stuck with the Old Skools. I, too, come from the puffy 90s/00s but I'd feel silly wearing them now. I don't have the look or the cred for big ol puffy kicks.
I completely understand the look down factor…. I’ve been skating vulc for like the last decade, usually a slip on. And I’m not a jumper, and really like the board feel. But the shoes I’m skating right now are the SB Vertebrae cause my feet had been a little sore and I got the SUPER cheap at Ross. So I’ve gotten used to them and don’t mind how they skate, but honestly hate how they look. Like the look down almost bugs me enough to throw me off. And i absolutely hate any footage of me in the shoes. Maybe if they were the black and gum models I would be able to put it out of my mind, but I’d still not like the looks of the shoe. It’s funny how something as small as how something looks can actually make a big difference. Like if I’m feeling my kit and my shoes and my grip job, 100% I’m gonna have a better sesh than if one of those three is off.
As much as some people don’t want to admit it, how you look play a big factor in how you feel on a skateboard. If you don’t feel like _you_ then you’re gonna be in your head and it’ll take you away from your skating. I’ve set aside plenty of shoes/clothes because they just didn’t feel right on me when I was wearing them. No shame in donating some used gear to those in need and buying something you know will work for you 👊
I also generally prefer more minimalist design but I like the protection of cupsoles, so I tend to skate slimmer line cupsoles (plus I've had some not happy vulc experiences of late - had some Cons Louie Pros which died fast and were uncomfortable af for my wide spent-haf-my-life-barefoot NZ feet). Most recently been skating Etnies Score + NB Westgate 508s (a little busier than I usually like, but I do like the board feel, flick etc + super comfy and got them at a good price).
I've only skated vulcanised so far. Emericas, Etnies and now Vans. I do prefer a minimalist shoe but one with a decent insole at least. I'm a little worried to buy a pair of cupsole shoes and end up not liking them and being forced to skate them for a couple of months. So I'm getting more Vans lol.
for those looking for a similar cup sole shoe that isnt newbalance, the rowan 2 is now my all time favorite, bought 4 pairs im set. All my other shoes (etnies marana, vans sk8hi comfycush) give me tendonitis when I skate
I’ve really enjoyed cupsole shoes that are a pretty good in between of cupsole and vulcanized. Joslins, MC wrap, NB 440, lakai telford(rip), are all very good thinner cupsoles in my opinion
Skating vans in the ‘90s made me hate vulcs, they did have some excellent cupsoles back then though. I had some old skools and the foxing disintegrated like they were made of pencil erasers from a session or two of kickflips. They have gotten much better since, and there is absolutely a difference between skate and casual models. The bmx/wafflecup soles are great for skating too, arguably better than vulcs in my opinion. I almost always modify my skate shoes in some way - doubling insoles, making insole/inserts out of cardboard to put under the insoles, pretreating stitches in high wear areas with glue, rebuilding/reinforcing soles with bike tire tubes and shoe goo, etc.
I’ve been skating Kyle walkers for a few years. I still really like them but want to find something else. I do like the busenitz 2 but I don’t think they’re making them right now. I want to check out the Foy new balance and those asic vikka pros. I like these Kyle walkers because it’s both a vulc and a cupsole. But I need a new shoe and I don’t like how vans fuck my feet up
Man, I stay in shoe limbo. I prefer cupsoles, but sometimes, I feel more comfortable in Vans vulcs because they're typically a bit wider where I need them. But I have very flat feet and one good primo landing will end my sesh. I loved the NB 440 until the redesign. The Vans Rowan 2 is great but so narrow that it kills my foot afterwards. The quest continues.... Can you give any insight into the width of the Tiago?
I’d say the Tiago is kinda in between, not too wide or thin, but NB models vary a lot depending on the model so I’d suggest trying them on before buying. One thing I’ll say about the Tiagos is landing primo is _much_ less painful than landing primo in any vulc.
This has nothing to do with either cupsoles or vulcs, but I can’t find any information, you wouldn’t happen to know who tactics is using for a woodshop do you? Gonna cope some shoes and a deck from them and I’m curious about the shop decks
35 years old, only been skating for 2 years, and certainly not jumping down anything worth bragging about. That to say, I've given both vulcs and cups a try and prefer the vulcs. The increased board feel provides better feedback, resulting in less time spent learning new tricks.
I'll update my response from the poll. Cupsole is prob what I'd rather skate. Wearing my vulc WalMart Etnie high tops, my feet hurt after a session because they're so thin. My DC Stags are prob cupsole as they have a lot more cushion and stiffness. My feet don't even hurt after a session. And my sessions are usually just lots of ollies, or trying heelflips, or manuals. So pretty low impact considering. I have done some skating in my Vans Old School with Pop Cush and my feet don't really hurt, but I don't do as much in them since they're not really my dedicated skate shoes. So maybe it just comes down to the right insole for me and a stiffer sole is a plus. I have some Chuck 70's and the insole is really nice (but I don't skate them). I do want to try the Converse AS-1 Pro

Me too. I feel less bad about shredding them if the colors suck. If they look too sick, I don't want to skate them and ruin them.
I’ve skated halfcabs for the past 4 years. It’s the perfect combo of vulc with plenty of padding.
@@danielbazzy I did a whole summer in half cabs a while back. Really solid shoe and I can see why it’s always been popular
I didn't experience boardfeel until I had been skating for over a decade and have never seen what the fuss over it is
Dude, strong agree.
Love the vids boss man keep holding it down much love 🔥♥️🤘
Try the Emerica OG-1 for a good in between
Also I’d suggest watching rose anvils video on last resort they’re literally Payless/ Walmart shoes
I would skate slip ons but I hate when the board lands on top of the shoe
Thanks for the vid. I don't have much shoe madness. Have been skating Adidas Busenitz's and I love them. Have a pair of half cabs on deck.
Cup sole or vulc? I had been skating the vulc version and like them.
Cupsole.
Vans sk8-hi pros, when they are worn in, I put Footprint insoles in them.
I think dunks are a pretty good “in between” cup and vulc. They also last quite long and are not as difficult to buy as they used to be.
“Let’s get down to the cons”
“But these are last resort’s”
“SHUDDUP” 😂😂😂😂
it blows my mind watching last resort vids and seeing someone like frankie decker or chris milic handle big ass drops and gaps in last resorts without exploding their ankles. part of me thinks they must be putting aftermarket insoles in their shoes, and part of me is just envious of youth. as far as cupsoles go i'd recommend the converse fastbreaks, they are the most vulc-y cupsole
@@kevinn9869 yeah those guys weigh like 180ilb _combined_ 😂 they could probably skate in socks and be alright
Ishoad AirMax II is a midsole. You should try that one. Its perfect for everyone.
There is no midsole on those
My ankles are shit - I can roll my ankle just walking down the sidewalk in a typical shoe, but not with NB 1010s.
The Adidas Samba are the happy medium for cup/vulc. At least for me
Especially with Footprint Insoles
Looked up the 868s. Those look sick.
Those NBs perform different by style but are overall damn robust .. Im like 200lbs n 40something.. n ya I dig em to keep me on the board.. those white/green smooth finish leather are hella sturdy
I love my 508s, but after that Intervals video and your recommendation, I'm definitely going to try the 1010s.
Holy fing shot. Didn't know what you meant by Intervals at first, but, just ran across the video. Sick. Only 4 minutes into it so far.
Nice clips! Currently skating some sb blazer mids. Been liking the vulc board feel again but with the extra support on the toe and ankles
i skate the vm002^s with old ultracush insoles. best combo imo
Great vidéo , what's your setup ??
Still, if I were in my 20s, I'd be rocking the Last Resorts or actual Chucks all day.
lol DC going the Osiris route jumping ship on their original vibe trying to cater to whatever is hot at the moment. Better to stick to the plan imo.
I just got my first board at 31 years old after a lifetime of playing college and pro level soccer. I love catching this channel's content, so relatable and humble and I can't even imagine being able to do any of these tech tricks. I hope the community stands sideways and rolls forward with our dude, DadBoard. Hit up your boy's tactics link for anything you're not getting at your local skate shop.
J
Hell yeah, appreciate that, my dude 🙏 keep skating it’ll all start to click the more time you put in!
Do the soccer skills carry over onto the board? I always thought they would because it takes a lot of foot skills.
And idk how because it’s the polar opposite but I also really like dunks, but it could just be a look good feel good skate good type of thing
thank you for making this video! It was very good!
@@Ernie_Creates thanks for watching!
You look really sharp in the Tiago's, Dad Board.
Puffy shoes for life
When Vans came out with Pop Cush, I stuck with the Old Skools.
You should try the nb 480 if you haven’t already
There are much thicker and stiffer cupsoles than the 1010, I think its a nice middle ground.
for those looking for a similar cup sole shoe that isnt newbalance, the rowan 2 is now my all time favorite, bought 4 pairs im set.
My shoe madness ended with the Nyjah3, i’ve been using it for 6 months!! And still has a few sessions in in it.
Great Reviews man!
But I need a new shoe and I don’t like how vans fuck my feet up
Hey man you should give Fallen shoes a shot if you like vulcanized soles! Their insoles are pretty good at absorbing impact and they're comfortable
Where is that parking garage ?
Nice skating!!
Ain't no planet x coming cuz ain't no space cause ain't not globe earth, great video
Vans Sk8-Hi fo lyfe
I thought your kcikflip looked great in the tiagos
1010 for the win
This has nothing to do with either cupsoles or vulcs, but I can’t find any information, you wouldn’t happen to know who tactics is using for a woodshop do you? Gonna cope some shoes and a deck from them and I’m curious about the shop decks
NB 1010 is so good
best skate shoe are half cabs imo
1010's saved my 41yo knees.. they killed my kickflips but i rather save my body.
im sure those new balances are comfy, but i would never skate those just based on how they look
Vans pro slip on best shoe for the money. Hated the tiago’s, I have no idea how they are so popular. They have terrible boardfeel.
Cupsole gang
If you’ve ever had a bad ankle break vulcanized are out
FP INSOLES all day everyday no matter what shoes
🛹🛹🛹
loving cupsoles but noticed now that its cold out in the northeast, cupsoles that have a foam midsole feel a decent amount stiffer
Can't do Vans or Vulcanized in the Northeast Winters! Need the cupsole's warmth and insulation.
Shoes are condoms for your feet
35 years old, only been skating for 2 years, and certainly not jumping down anything worth bragging about. That to say, I've given both vulcs and cups a try and prefer the vulcs. The increased board feel provides better feedback, resulting in less time spent learning new tricks.
Shoes are cheating #bringbackclaywheels
Update: I tried on the AS1s today. They weren’t comfy. The insole curves up along the sides. Not sure who thought that was a good design idea
Vans BMX Old Skools have been my go to shoe for the past few years. Looks like an Old Skool but has the same cupsole as the K Walkers and others. Really good board feel and popcush insoles too. Best of both worlds for me. Great video
