It's Bossy, hands down;. Had he stayed healthy, he probably scores 1,000 + goals. His 9 straight 50-goal seasons are simply ridiculous. It may be a record that is never surpassed. Gretzky called him the greatest goal-scorer he ever saw. A pretty resounding endorsement.

I can accept Mario as #1, but the numbers say differently. Mario had a shortened career, who knows how much greater he could have been if he was healthy. Gretzky holds all time record for goals, so a valid and acceptable argument can be made for him. But Bossy too was playing with chronic back and knee injuries which also shortened his career to only 10 years. He is tied for most 50 goal seasons, but the only one with 9 consecutive 50 goal seasons. and holds the record goals per game at .764. Some of these players may be more complete players than Bossy, but he is the greatest pure goal scorer of all time!

Gretzky is number 1 for me, but an argument can be made for Ovechkin and Bobby Hull. They both lead the league in goals more times than Gretzky, which might be a fairer way to compare since they played their primes in lower scoring eras than Gretzky.
So for me it's still Gretzky, but I can accept people saying Hull or Ovechkin. There really isn't a good argument for Lemieux ahead of Gretzky other than the eye test (meaning his highlights look prettier) and Bossy doesn't have a valid argument at all.

I think Bobby Hull is underestimated on peoples lists. He went to the WHA at 33 years old. If you count his games up in both leagues, Wayne Gretzky and Bobby Hull both habe about 1470 games played. Brett Hull had 906 goals. Would be the most evern if he was in the NHL during those years he would have had more then Gordie Howe in the NHL.
Bobby Hull's era was much hatder to score then Mike Bossy playing years.

      I'm a Lemieux guy here.
When Lemieux retired in 97' he had:
      745gp
      613g
      1494pts.
      Bossy had:
      752gp
      573g
      1126pts.
      Very comparable games played..
Both had injuries but Lemieux were worse, and Lemieux didn't have a Trottier to play with for several years.
Lemieux also had more assists by far, meaning he looked to pass a lot more.

@@MMGJ10 - and then there's THIS Gretzky factor that everyone is glossing over (probably because Gretzky was a "pass first" playmaker)... Mario had the better GPG average when he came back from retirement. At that point Lemieux hadn’t played even ONE game past age 31. Gretzky on the other hand played about 700 games past age 31. Of course Gretzky’s GPG took a hit. Then Mario went on to play only 170 games after that (past age 31). Here are their goals per game numbers after each of Lemieux’s retirements: FIRST retirement: Lemieux scored 613 goals in 745 games (0.82 GPG). Gretzky had 619 goals after the same 745 games (0.83 GPG). SECOND retirement: Lemieux finished with 690 goals in 915 games (0.75 GPG). Gretzky had 729 goals after the same 915 games (0.80 GPG). Gretzky wins in both cases, apples to apples. Here is the link to the source for these statistics:
      www.statmuse.com/nhl/ask/how-many-points-did-gretzky-have-after-his-first-915-games

Plus he missed half of the 1993 season as a result (the highest scoring season of the 90s), and also had to endure a lock-out season. If you include ALL goals, playoff and regular season goals, or even if you just count playoff goals (Which are obviously the far more important and big ones), Lemieux is actually first in goals per game, just as they have him #1. Lemieux is a slight fraction behind Bossy overall in the regular season, but that only after coming out of retirement after 3 years off. Lemieux was easily the best pure goal scorer ever. Also, Rocket Richard should be higher on the list. 50 goals in 50 games in 1944-45 is as much an accomplishment as scoring 80 goals in the 1980's. The two best pure goal scorers are Mike Bossy and Mario Lemieux. Not sure which one takes first...but sure both of them are head and shoulders above everybody else. Both grappled with injuries...factor that in and you really have to wonder how much better they were than everybody else. The great ape / great 8 is a fraud. Ovechkin's team scores less goals with him on the ice than their opposition scores on the capitals. He's a selfish ego-hulkster and vastly over-rated in a team sport. The most relevant stat here is average goals per game. Bossy and Lemieux are clearly one and two.
