      What's sundowning?

    • @MrsBaird-gf1rx
      @MrsBaird-gf1rx หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@mariapearce8617 I got this from the Internet: describes behavioral changes that can occur in people with dementia in the late afternoon or early evening. It's characterized by increased confusion, anxiety, agitation, and restlessness. Sundowning can occur at any stage of dementia, but it's more common in the middle and later stages. It's not necessarily linked to the sun setting.

    • @RachelLeMay-y9w
      @RachelLeMay-y9w หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      @@mariapearce8617it's when there's a noticeable increase in confusion, anxiety, restlessness or agitation. They call it sundowning because most of the time it occurs in the evening as the sun is going down. But it can happen anytime. You can usually calm them down with talking and redirecting as Dan does and then they'll eventually be back at their normal level of dementia

    • @PennyMonroe
      @PennyMonroe หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @ It causes confusion and makes patients irritated. I first learned of it when my hubs was in CCU with a brain bleed. He was mean as hell one night and the neurosurgeon explained to us that it was common in cases of brain trauma and not to take it personally. He recovered but my poor mom had it for 3 years with her dementia.

    He is one that makes me smile while breaking my heart. I’m a Critical Care RN and also a manager at an Assisted Living/Nursing home. I always had those few that slid right into my heart, like King Ed! His sweet “Thank you”’s every time you tell him that you take care of him literally make me cry. I’m so glad to get to see a bit of you guys’ lives on here, but I sure wish I would have known Dr. Ed long ago, too! The world needs so many more people like him. But, we need to find help and pray to God for a cure for Dementia/Alzheimers, etc. Merry Christmas and a big hug to our sweet King Doctor Ed from North Carolina! ❤

    His breathing is labored. I can tell he is worked up. My mom has dementia, lives in a skilled nursing facility. She is wheelchair bound. Today I remembered to tell her she was safe and that she didn’t have anything to worry about and she had plenty of money. And her family is all well. I do not tell her my daughter is pregnant anymore because she thinks that she is still five and cries when I tell her. I am learning much as time goes on and do appreciate what I am learning here on your channel. God bless you.

    At first Dan, I thought this channel was created for monetary reasons, then after seeing how wealthy you are, that flew. Then I thought, it was for the recognition. Then I see the true hurt you go through, so that flew. Now after seeing this video I conclude you do it for your unselfish way of expressing your hurt, but providing so much needed information of how it actually is to live with someone who suffers dementia and what people should do. Especially the people you love dearly. Betcha he was, and still is a great dad.

    These moments remind me of sundowning with my Gma. She had a heart of gold. Even through her scariest moments, the depth of her dementia, she still was gracious and so loving in her moments of clarity. Dan, you are amazing with your Dad. He is living his best life with you, and you will treasure this time always.

    I keep saying it Dan. You’re an amazingly patient and loving son to your sweet dad.
    My maternal grandmother and aunt had Alzheimers disease. I’ve also nursed people with it.
    Much love, prayers and best wishes to you, Danielle, Ed and your family this Christmas/holiday season.

    Dan God is really going to bless you. You are so gentle with him.What is so outstandingly beautiful is how you calmly answer the questions that he asks repeatedly in such quick succession You never get too tired to reassure him. You looked a lot like him in this video. Ed is lovable! It would be heart piercing to be mean to him. Such a sweet, soft soul.

    I really love the softer tone and the downward inflection in your voice, Dan.
    As the mother of an ADHD kid I can attest that this communication style helps to lower the excitability and de-escalates the situation.
    Beautiful job.
