He, Tohgi Hideki, was born in the family which has been serving Emperor for playing ancient Japanese music. The instruments he was trained to play and his ancestors themselves possibly came from central asia to Japan thousands years ago.
The instument is called Hichiriki, and is one of the oldest reed instruments of the world. Analysis showed that the sound of Hichiriki is closer to the human voice than to that of the "intruments", but it has not been clearly understood why.
at first when i heard it, it sound like a saxphone, i didnt realize it wasnt until i looked at the video...love to get it but i think these instrument take time to learn them...
@Leatootskirootsboot exactly, I am not oppose to anybody, just dont like the silly title of "Japanese Instrument". It's an instrument, no nationality. That's it
@Leatootskirootsboot Fine, but I mean, you just can't say Saxophone is an American instrument or German instrument or belongs to any countries right? I don't think instrument really have a "nationality", the music styles have, players have, but instruments have not, eventhough it associated with certain cultures. Everybody can use any of them, they are for every body, especially the instrument originally from an extencted culture.
actually it's easier than saxophone and a bit harder than larger armenian turkish may(dudouk). it's too small so needing some breathing techniques. just as saxophone is too large requiring much breaths. middle is always the best.
Impressive, but the musical instrument is not really JAPANESE instrument. It's 篳篥,Chinese:bi li ;Korean:Piri;Japanese:hichi riki . Ancient Chinese borrowed this from Nomadic people in Middle Asia, then passed it to Japan through Korea.
東儀さんには、思い出す子供の頃の記憶があることが、離れられない理由です。

it was like a sopranino saxophone but with more raw power. SO AWESOME!
Wow, this is amazing! Great performance!
洋楽と純邦楽の融合ですね。
Isn't a recorder. It's a double-reed flute so.... like the oboe. And awesome.
Sounds like a recorder crossed with a kazoo, its quite nice
It's used in a lot of Shinto rituals.

Oh my gosh. It sounds so much like a soprano sax... but it looks so different. It's so tiny! o.O
