    About JamesandKarla:
Hey everyone! We are husband-and-wife architectural/interior photographers based in NYC. We started our video channel to act an artistic intervention to help raise awareness of the importance of small independently-owned businesses and the unique character these shops add to the streets and neighborhoods of New York City.
In our videos we will showcase portraits of storefronts and shop owners in New York City & beyond and capture moments of city life that capture the spirit, energy and cultural diversity of individual neighborhoods. We also bring our dog, Hudson along whenever we can.
We made it our mission to thoroughly document unique 'mom-and-pop' stores when we began to notice the alarming rate at which they were disappearing. Our critically acclaimed books include “STORE FRONT: The Disappearing Face of New York”, “New York Nights”, “STORE FRONT II- A History Preserved” and “Broken Windows-Graffiti NYC”.
Come see the city & subscribe to our channel :)

The documentary walk is a little amateurish but it's all done with so much charm...good details...and Karla presents it eloquently with enthusiasm & she personifies a Greenwich Village personality. Love what she's done. Hopefully, she can return when the doors aren't closed. Because this was -- yes, extra, extra good indeed.

Great video, I spent many a night at the Blue Note, then left there and went to Cafe Reggio for a great espresso and then closed out Zinc's.
Those were the days. I will never forget it as long as I live and breathe.

Thank you for this! Loved your energy and the subject matter and truly hope you guys made it thru Covid and everything else that's thrown at my old 80's stomping ground! This brought back some good mems when the city was still grritty but a little less shitty. Love, health, safety and peace to you, always!

I visited Greenwich Village in 1982...my one and only trip to NYC....and I remember seeing all the street musicians with open guitar cases....and some guy playing a big gold piano in washington square park under that big arch...also the city was filthy then and they had those big old fashioned taxis....it was quite an experience!

Blue Bird so much has changed since your last and only visit to NYC but in Greenwich Village remarkably many music places have stayed the same although real estate prices and rents are sky high. There are still some musicians playing in Washington Square Park too (as you saw in the video). We hope you can visit again once it is safe to do so and see it all for yourself again.

I thoroughly enjoyed the history lesson on all these music / jazz club venues. I would love to visit Marie's Crisis & Arthurs's Tavern.....love the historic bldg. I understand rent increases, however, $33,000 that's insane! It appears the former Cornelia Street Cafe stands empty?? We have a few of those little book nooks scattered in our historic town along with food pantry nooks for anyone in need. Will check out the jewelry link. Hugs & kisses to sweet Hudson!!

renee nosal we are so glad you enjoyed watching our video and would like to visit both Marie’s Crisis @ Arthur’s Tavern. And yes $33,000 a month rent is an insane amount for a small business to pay. That is so cool that you have those little book nooks and also food pantry nooks in your town. Hudson sends big paws 🐾 up and kisses to you too!

Great video, as always!! Really brought back some great memories!! Electric Lady Studios was next door to the legendary 8th Street Playhouse, where Rocky Horror played midnights on weekends for years. It was always great seeing some incredible performer run into the studio while we waited for the show, like seeing Keith Richards during the "Tattoo You" sessions! Great memories!!

Brad Marcus thank you so much for the fantastic feedback. We are glad our video brought back such good memories of hanging out in the neighborhood and going to the 8th Street Playhouse to see the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Do you also remember all the shoe stores that once lined West 8th Street? They are all gone now.

@@JamesandKarla I know! So sad! I used to go down there to get new sneakers and then to Postermat to get so many great things! That part of 8th street has completely lost it's soul, very sad.

This is a truly delightful tour...brought back so many memories of performances I attended in the Village (tho' I was sorry not to see The Bitter End included...if for no other reason than I performed there!), and makes me miss my hometown even more than I already do. (FYI, "Gillespie" is pronounced with a hard G.) Thank you (and your dog is extra extra good ;))!

Alexandra Leh thank you so much for the wonderful feedback! We are glad our video brought back such good memories. It is funny that you mention The Bitter End as we just highlighted that incredible space in our video of must visit Bob Dylan spots in NYC. We didn’t want to include it again on this tour as we had just highlighted Here is the link to watch it:

James and Karla never fail to impress with extra, extra good videos which are entertaining and informative . I've frequented most of the venues here except for Duplex . In tandem with the triangular stage and building story of Village Vanguard, i want to share the attached link which story has similar roots in real estate history. www.atlasobscura.com/places/hess-triangle. Ahh, the Bitter End on Bleecker St is another of my favs'. Thanks much for all you do and your T shirt, face mask and bracelet all complement each other, Karla. Keep up your labor of love. # 1 fan.

Pizza Rules we can’t thank you enough for the wonderful feedback. We really appreciate you letting us know just how much you enjoyed our video, finding it both entertaining and informative. Its funny that you mention about the Hess Triangle as we live that story so much....basically Mr. Hess giving the finger to the City. We also included the story about the Hess Triangle in our “Store Front II- A History Preserved” book as our photo of Village Cigars is the cover image. Thank you again for watching and commenting. Everything on Cornelia St. closed. The cafe, Poe, Home. And the owners of those places would rather just have empty storefronts than affordable rents. Do they get a tax write-off or something? You left The Bitter End out of your tour.
