Yes some characters have the same name or whatever, but in comics it can be done in a way that works. Think of having Superman or The Flash as members of the Avengers, or Carnage and Loki as part of the Legion of Doom? The stories that can be retold; Civil War, Infinity War, Endgame, and Infinite Crisis.
