For me Evo changed car magazines for the better. And youtube tests too. What a distinguished gathering of some of THE most respected motoring journalists whose car tests are always authoritative and interesting. Harry's recent re-testing of an Alpine on Harry's Garage youtube encouraged me to buy one.

I'm glad you all acknowledged they really were the glory days and simultaneously appreciated it as such too. Validates what i love about cars of that era. Cheers!

Blagged an interview with John not long after Evo moved to Wollaston, if I recall correctly. Was woefully ill-equipped, spilled my cup of tea and went to university instead afterwards. Think that job went to Jethro Bovingdon, which was probably for the best. I ended up in technology journalism instead, but always enjoyed reading Evo and learned a lot from the interview experience. I don't often bother with new cars nowadays, but do enjoy Harry's channel and occasional Evo video. Thank you guys for having the courage to create Evo and some fabulous content over the years. Also thankful for Henry Catchpole - a true gem of a find - and occasionally wonder what happened to earlier projects like the Ford Capri, super-light Caterham etc.

What a fascinating interview, more of this please! I clearly recall my first "Evo" moment. I was in the Kingston Upon Thames WH Smiths and that Evo cover jumped out at me and I had to have it. Having religiously bought Car, Fast Lane, Performance Car, Autocar, Motor, the occasional Automibile (US).....I was a car magazine addict and your were my latest and greatest fix! Thank you for taking the risk and producing such a brilliant magazine!

I used to live just around the corner from Peter Tomlinson: seeing the L555EVO Lotus on his drive gave it away! Remember seeing this new-fangled magazine called Evo on the shelves of the Bar Hill Tescos and couldn't quite believe how crazy packed that first edition was. You guys missed a beat, though: the first issue wasn't 1, or 01, but you numbered it 001. That sent a message! Great to reminisce and hear about the behind-the-scenes leading up to the launch

This podcast has brought back so many memories for me and also has put some background and content to the launch of EVO. I was working for the reprographic company at the time who was dealing with EMAP and worked on PC, MAX POWER, REVS, CLASSIC CAR WEEKLY, CLASSIC CAR. I remember the news about PC ending, but then within weeks JB walking through the door with a 'secret project' which we had to turn round quickly. Out of all the motoring magazines we did EVO was the one that I look forward to working on. Think I managed to work on 100 or so issues including 'specials' before moving on to pastures new. It's great to see you guys all back in one room and chatting about the good old days. JONAH

Reading EVO as a kid, falling in love with (all kinds of) cars! Before the internet, before TH-cam, the word in automobilia was written by EVO magazine.

Quality insight into the early days of what has been an epic magazine for me, I recall I picked up my first copy of EVO in 2005 in Australia as a 15 year old and I’ve been grabbing a copy whenever I can since! It’s always been about the writers and the writing (yeah plus mega photography) which separated EVO from the rest, despite subscribing digitally for years I will still buy a printed copy whenever I can and it tends to stay around as I feel it’s a lasting read and I will totally pick up old copies for a re-read down the line for the proper drives and stories. Keep it up guys, I’m proud to have a 5 star rated car in the garage and value all the learning and evaluations, a proper car mag for the enthusiast 👌

I remember buying issue 001 of Evo and then missing a couple here and there before realising I needed to buy it monthly. Eventually I bought the missing back issues and I have around 200 paper copies in my loft before switching to digital. It must be very tough now with so many TH-camrs getting to new launches etc but nothing beats the quality of the write ups and photos in Evo.
I’ve bought all of my cars due to Evo and used the various articles to make final decisions - I’m currently on my 4th 911 (991.2 GT3) which I daily use.
This channel will be great for Evo and I’m excited to see more. I’ve also been enjoying Harry’s Garage since he started the channel.
Wishing you guys continued success 😎👍
    Cheers!

A very enjoyable hour or so. I have been a subscriber since issue 1 and still have every single copy and even though I moved to Florida in 2008 I brought the collection with me much to the wife's disgust because I also brought every issue of Performance Car and Fast Lane with me! I fondly remember a very enjoyable day at Donnington Park where John was giving Hot Laps in an Evo 8 or 9 and Dickie was driving a Scooby Doo. Both cooked their tyres in the morning and the Evo was down to the threads. How the car was driven home again probably shouldn't be asked. A Prodrive Scooby was brought into action in the afternoon. A very young Jethro Bovingdon was also there giving Hot Laps in the Evo MIni Cooper. Keep up the good work guys.

I remember reading performance car from about 1990 - I would read it instead of revising for GCSEs along with fast lane, car and motorsport. I remember being gutted when it was stopped. It carried on for a bit in car but in name only if I remember. A few months after it stopped, I was working in all days when I was at uni - I’d sort the papers for the paper rounds and help sort the stock delivery with the manager - always ending up doing more hours than I shad promised, because other staff due to work had hangovers. I happened to be browsing the mags on my break in the September / October and found the first issue of EVO - I recognised the editorial team, bought it an£ never looked back. Twenty five years later, still reading and it’s still as good as ever.

Enjoy the writing style as well as the better quality of production as Harry discussed. Look forward to more insights, maybe some of the stories about certain tests that maybe didn't go to plan or when the Italian police compounded the cars!! Also thoughts on where the industry is going, e-fuels etc. Keep up the good work.

Evo was a massive and formative part of my teenage and older years. Suddenly having a mag full of performance cars when before I'd made do with autocar and other more prosaic copies. Early single digit editions like 350vs996, 993 GT(2) vs Viper GTS-R, launch of Maserati 3200GT, first eCoty.. All fond memories for me. The writing was (and is still) fantastic, particular from the gents on this episode (I'd always be slightly disappointed when it was someone else..) Also wondering what has become of John's Capri project, Dickie's Caterham (and his 964 RS?)?

Performance car was excellent and had Richard Porter on the back pages for Sniff petrol.
EVO I subscribed too from the beginning, and I'm 99.9% sure RM and RB had to work for Car for a few months as well as I remember there were articles from both in CAR magazine.
I also think there is an area of media today missing with a test where the same car is tested and reported in video format with the different views of each tester. We use to get that in EVO especially car of the year, but we don't see it in video format

Here we are 3/4s of the way thru '24 and they are just starting a podcast. The intercooler fans will like this as it's looking back 15 or 20 years and how they do love a Singer 911

Great podcast. I loved Performance Car and one very happy memories was doing one of the treasure hunts in northern France (was there more than one?) I was in a Westfield and I think John kindly carried the doors in his car as the weather was so good. I was one of the ones who moaned the loss of Performance car, and was looking for something to replace it. Walked into WH Smiths, and there was a new magazine called EVO. Flicked through, loved what I saw. Looked familiar, so looked at the Editors. Meaden & Barker. All I needed to know. Bought every copy ever since.
