Both podcasts are 4 people having a chat, the main difference between them is the presentation format. The Harris one is done remotely via Teams/Skype conference call from home and evo is done with 4 people sitting round a table in an office with boom mics obscuring them. I know which I prefer.....
@macthe-qy2ip The two aren't mutually exclusive. I accept that the word passion is open to interpretation. Personally, I find them too dry in this particular forum....whereas I think Harry Metcalf in "Harry's Garage " has the right mix. Still dry, but passion is evident. PS..been following these guys for many decades and subscribe to the mag...prefer the print tbh.
Motor manufacturers need to start designing and building smaller lighter cars with BEV and ICE engines these vehicles would be very efficient and kick EV’s into history where they belong, what a waste of resources they have been!
Great to see James now part of the team and I really enjoyed both this and the first podcast. I'm convinced we've jumped the gun with the move to BEVs and there should have been much greater focus on hybridisation as a route to efficiency until we decarbonise electricity supply. Many billions have been wasted on subsidies for BEVs which would have been better spent on encouraging fuel efficiency and sustainable fuels. I'm lucky to own a 25 year old Honda Insight which has a gem of a one litre three cylinder engine (aided by an electric motor to give the torque of a fifteen hundred) and which has CO2 emissions on a par with the best of today's BEVs when they are charged on gas fired electricity (as they mostly are in the UK).
Wait whaaaaat? At 33:33 did I just hear Barker say the NSX V6 was dull?.... Are you mad :D It was lauded at the time, is lauded now, one of the first to have VTEC, sounded fabulous, was reliable and efficient with a magnificent power delivery. Not huge power by todays standards of course but it was not a heavy car, and it certainly didn't struggle to keep up with the 993 & 348 competition of the day.... I'm sure I've misheard, because the detuned version they put in the autobox cars (because the box couldn't handle the power) *was* poor - still sounded quite nice but with a lethargic slusher we were looking at a 7-7:5sec car lacking the appetite for revs so enjoyable in the manual... Still loving the podcasts!
China’s EV’s will decimate the current auto industry. It will be unrecognisable in 5 years. Effectively the EU has regulated the industry out of existence.
Re sheepishly handing keys back, I recall a short test drive of a used Nissan 200SX and the turbo blew, with me limping back to the car lot (not a main dealer!) and turning off the ignition as quickly as possible to reduce the smoke and strange noise emanating from under the bonnet. Maybe I should've warmed it up, but equally, I think I saved the buyer some trouble.
Great car with a mundane engine ... Nissan 200SX S14 ... Evo had one on long term test and I remember John's words to this day saying he'd left the removable stereo facia in the office but it wasn't going to matter as the roads were wet and the chassis was going to provide the entertainment. I bought one shortly after and 100% correct ... the chassis was fantastics and still one of the most entertaining cars I have ever owned. Sadly I modified it and ruined it !
Listening to gearheads talk about ICEs is like listening to train heads talk about steam trains. They love the sound and the romance of it. EVs will and do outperform ICE like diesel outperforms steam.
Thats the first time I have heard anybody mention the people that have to buy the cheap end of the market for cars, This is where the hurt is going forwards. I myself run a £2k caddy maxi diesel van, And will re-engine it when it resides to blow up. Its currently done 211,000 miles. Yes a EV would suit me as I do 100 miles a week, But I can't afford to buy one.
Good to hear some realism about the S2000. But why is such a disappointing car still fetching mega money? And why do I want one again? Oh and three cylinder cars next time?
18:00 Richard Meaden having never bought a new large luxury sedan wondering why his mates who need to spend £400,000+ a year on non GT pork to get the GT3 he says is a bargain 🧐
one day some car journalist will figure out that the seducing sound of the early rally subi flat 4 comes from the unequal length manifold which is no good for spool and was changed for equal length manifold on later spec C cars.. sound alone doesnt make the engine great
Gentlemen, given that the carbon in the fossil fuels was previously in the atmosphere, at a time when the growth, diversity and success of both flora and fauna was far greater than it is now, and that climate issues are more prevalent with cold than hot, would you consider that there is a wider discussion to be had? Or do your funders require ESG conversation?
I sold a GT2 back in the day for £ 88. Thanks for reminding me how much they are worth. Mind it was well tracked, I think I went through 9 sets of Pirelli Comps..
I think the way the regulations are heading, the manufacturers are going to lose their individuality, a car from Kia is going to be a lot closer to a car manufactured by BMW, so your more premium makes are going to suffer.
I think EV's are way too expensive to start with and the used values are poor to say the least, But who want's to spend £35k on a used ev with no real used value going forwards.
Dickie stop talking over people mate. Especially the young guy. Try to speak the same percentage as everybody else. Basics of this sort of communication medium. We all love you but it's not cool when he's making a great point and you start up again. Learn to listen/enjoy others' contributions.
THIS is how you need to end EVO Car of the Year. Get everyone in a room talking about the cars before scores are announced and the winner is revealed.
Great idea!
Blimey! Just finished Chris Harris podcast and this pops up. Fridays have never been so good!!
Monkey just popped up on Rogan too 🎉

Yeah the conference call format of the Chris Harris pod is appalling. They constantly interrupt and you can’t hear what either is saying.
these guys discuss lot of more advanced things compared to Chris more consumer talk aproach
Haha… on similar schedule here (this one, CH&F, and Chris on Joe Rogan’s podcast as well). Oh, also the Smith & Sniff (‘otosot’) :)
James Taylor has a brilliant way of describing things, really impressive
Altho a little too loud & rowdy!
Great video! please continue discussing different cars engines etc - the knowledge you have will be great to hear !
So good to see an Evo podcast. I really enjoyed the last one, but this one not so much..I find the subject of EVs tedious.
Come on boys...inject some PASSION into these videos....push the boundaries a little
They all speak like that bearded boring guy from Autocar.

Really, really great. I probably enjoy these because I've been reading Barker and Meaden's words for the last 25 odd years.

Welldone gents keep the car questions flowing best thing ever a table of legends
Love it! Breath of fresh air 🎉
The perfect watch on Your lunch break at work!

VW VAG announced the closure of one of their Germany factories, first time ever, they are really struggling with the ALL EV ethos.

As an ex B7 RS4 owner, no mention of range anxiety
Because filling stations. Wallet anxiety maybe, range anxiety n/a
Thanks for an hour of engine nostalgia, a wonderful distraction, like an audio version of the magazine

Great podcast, too bad to see that Hyundai killed i30N and i20N here in Europe, the last of the great hothatches. Get Chris Hariss on the episode
The headline topic - EV versus ICE starts at @9:30.

but you didn't actually discuss the premise...

Viper, it has a v10.

@14:40 Love the podcast but can’t handle the sharp intakes of breath coming through the microphones. Wtf.

EV's are not scaling up.
Have you seen any drag event, everything is a V8, all you mention is stupid expensive or just plain stupid
Where's Harry Metcalf?
On the combine.
Busy looking for some better roads 🙂

Yeah, but the young lad is very modest - of course, it's a seniority thing.
A bit of air between you and the microphones would be good. Sounds like we're all in bed together.
