- We’ve had lots of questions lately about how to start work camping, so we made a video right away so we could help you! You may also hear workamping referred to as camp hosting. Work camping for us means we are working at a campground or other job location where we receive our site for free and are also paid an hourly wage. We are boots on the ground doing this work, so you are learning from our experiences. This is our only source of income. We plan to camp host for about 2 years with our house still in our own hands, then I retire, we sell the house, and follow your guidelines! You jumped in head first!

We are boots on the ground, Work Campers too. Great advice especially being a 1099 employee or W-2 there is a big difference between the two. Health Care is something that you must plan for. God Bless you two.

We start workamping in 3 weeks.
We always wanted to travel full time, but didn't think we could until we were both age 62.
By focusing on becoming debt free and workamping, we're now ready to go.
Next stop South Dakota!

When you say "apply" 1 season ahead. Is a season like Fall, Winter, etc. Example: If we want to start workcamping November 2024, when would you start looking/applying? Thank you for the video. Super helpful.
Great information. Ive been on several job sites and notice its harder to find jobs for the single person. Any advice? Thanks.
We've found that even those job listings say they are looking for couples, lots of places are open to single work campers! Would definitely recommend still submitting your resume and following up with them to see if they'd be willing to consider it!
This is awesome info. I looked at some of the sites, but can't find how long of a commitment they want. Are there short term jobs? Or only seasonal/yearly?

Hey Matt I was wondering how you find the CDL jobs as I have a Class A but haven’t used it in over 7 years
We find all the CDL jobs on workamper.com! We have the diamond membership and definitely recommend it so you can receive real-time alerts for job openings! Lots of CDL jobs in Minnesota in the fall due to the huge farming community there! Hope that helps!
Hi! You mentioned the days off are important to you. Do most of them have you work weekends? What do ya'll normally want? We are going full time and my husband will be working remotely and I'll be work camping but I would like to have days off with him if I can. Is this possible?
Hi, Mary! Yes, we have almost always worked weekends. Normally we prefer our days off during the week and prefer to work weekends simply because we are usually in very high tourist areas, and weekends are the busiest times for tourism. We love exploring during the week when things are a little quieter. If you are up front with employers about your reasons, they may be willing to work with a weekday schedule. Communication is key with work camping employers!

I answered this on another video but thought I would add the answer here as well for any future questions. 🙂 Hi, Maureen! The jobs have varied quite a bit! I (Laurie) have worked in the office while Matt has worked on the grounds. We've also worked together cleaning cabins, sites, bathrooms. Another job I cleaned and he was a ranger (security/assisting the office as needed with customer requests and issues). Matt works for a farmer each fall driving a semi from field to elevator for their harvest. I hope that helps give a little better idea! -Laurie & Matt
In your experience, how long has your shortest work camping time been?
Our shortest gig is 6-8 weeks when Matt works for a farmer (drives semi). Otherwise, 4 months would be the next shortest!
Have you ever ran into a situation were you broke down on your way to another campsite for work ?
We have not, although on our way to our first workamping job, we did have frozen tanks and water lines so we stayed in one place because we were essentially just afraid to move on not knowing what would happen. Thankfully we gave ourselves plenty of time to get to the job, and we recommend doing that between all jobs...plenty of time.
Thanks for your reply I'm looking into work amount ng but I have a older vehicle towing my travel trailer. It's the thought of breaking down with a major repair seems to huant me
