    Outside of a couple emulators like Xenia, having a high end GPU for emulation is only valuable if you want to upscale your games to 4k or even 10k resolutions.
    But if your only goal is to simply have the ability to play these games, or even playing these games but upscaled to only 1080p then it is perfectly possible to play games at a decent frame rate with very a very moderate GPU.
    At the end of the day most of these games are either at least 10+ years old or runs on a 7 year tablet in regards to the Switch, or in regards to ShadPS4 is too early in development to be worth using regardless of hardware. The GPU requirements for these games if they got native PC ports would be very low end, in turn high end GPUs won't be needed for emulation.

    • @mozydiaz8296
      @mozydiaz8296 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      But it would really be a waste to buy a gaming PC just for emulation, especially since at the moment GPUs for playing in 1080p are not expensive (like the RX 6600), I have one, coupled with a Ryzen 5 5600X I play in 1080p in very good conditions, sometimes with all the settings on high, and if we add to that technologies like Lossless Scaling or AFMF, entry-level GPUs still have a bright future ahead of them, even in emulation.

      @@mozydiaz8296 Without a doubt, emulation is just one small facet of what makes PC the definitive way to play video games. Native PC games will almost always be the best way to enjoy games.

      Using a lower end cpu will only make the difference between GPUs look smaller. Of course it also depends on the emu and game and settings. Basically to remove all doubt a more powerful cpu should have been used.

      @@tendosingh5682 At native resolution or whatever under 720p yes. But as soon as the resolution begins to go beyond the least VRAM amount the two, then it will start to show a huge speed difference. At the time of 970, even 1080p is pushing the limits. 1280x1048p or 1680x1050p is properly the highest the 970 is intended to.

    I don't understand how people think dolphin is more performant than pcsx2 now in anyway. Even if the frame rate is higher anything, other than native res in dolphin has way more stutters than pcsx2 in just about every game on first run and the higher the resolutions the worse the stutters.

    • @m0ssyk1m10

      For Dolphin, it'll always be stuttery if you're running on OpenGL or Vulkan renderers, even though Vulkan is faster, from my experience it's also a bit unstable and performance can be inconsistent and stuttery
      Use DirectX12 instead for Dolphin, the experience will become stutter free, also make sure to enable pre-compiled shaders for it too for guaranteed no stutters

    I'm rocking an i5-2400, 16gb DDR3 Ram and a 1050ti. The thing is, I lent my 1050ti for a friend for work since his GPU died, and he let me borrow a GTX745 4gb a friend left at his house.
    So, for 3 months, I've been rocking an i5 2400 with 16gb DDR3 RAM and an old GTX 745, and almost a month ago I tried to emulate Persona 5 Royal on Yuzu. Results? The game is flawless, no stuttering, 1080p quality in docked mode, locked stable 30fps like in the original switch, and that made me wonder if I could run another switch games as well. So, I got Zelda Breath of The Wild, Tears of The Kingdom, AND Zelda Link's Awakening Remake. Played everything with the same quality as the switch, except for Tears of the Kingdom that ran between 28-30 fps, and Link's awakening ran at 60.
    Not only that, with the same setup, I've been playing God of War 2 at 60 fps in 1080p, and Rygar: The Legendary Adventure with the same 1080p and 60fps. No stutters, nothing.
    Conclusion: Don't give a damn about it. GPUs help, yes, but in emulation, the only things you need to worry about are first: Your CPU and RAM, second, the settings you've set for every game personally in the emulator, and third: The compatibility and optimizations of the emulator itself regarding that game.

  • @iokwong1871
    @iokwong1871 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    I think your results are a bit misleading, due to the relatively weak CPU. Yes it is a 10th Gen, but when it comes to single thread performance which is the most important thing for Emulation, it is actually just slightly better than a 7th Gen.... i7. You need a better Single Thread CPU to "bottle neck" the GPU. And you will find that anything up to the Wii, 970 would make virtually no difference for the native game, even at 3-4x resolution. And anything more than that is likely to be a VRAM problem then the actual GPU.

    Emulators, in nature are more dependent on the CPU like a console is which their igpu weren't that good, but their cpu have great performance. I'd say any console emulator is around 70% cpu 30% gpu based.
    Also the reason the performance are similar between the two GPUs is because the 10400f is bottlenecking the 4070. That being said both components need to be some somewhat similar in performance to work better. If you get a faster CPU maybe an 8 core 16 thread on and the 4070 would perform much better than this.

    For emulation you can use such gpus all time. The gtx 970 is quite capable today, also a radeon 570 or similar is very well doing in emulation. Consider that the emulated hardware is weak in comparison to modern gaming pcs. I still use a gtx 970, radeon 570 and a gtx 980ti. And they do well for anything but AAA titles. Consider that the gtx 970 has 3,5 Gig fast Ram, but the last 0.5 Gig is slow. In my experience that leads in some games to stutter, mainly at 1440p.

    The emulation process will always be more heavy on the cpu because the cpu is "emulating" the original hardware of the console and outputting it on the screen...this means that there will always be 2 layers of work for the cpu to output the final result while a pc game will take 1 layer because it was made for the cpu.
    I can even say that the GPU doesn't matter at all in most cases of emulation.

    To an extent GPU matters, but nowhere near as much as a good CPU.
    CPU aside, my PC with a GT 1030 was barely running at an unstable 20fps on GameCube emulation, which increased to a solid 60 fps with both the Intel Arc A380 and RX 6400, and when building a PC for a mate, the RTX 3070 I tested for him performed identical to the RX 6400 despite their power difference at 1440P.
    Only going to 4K would change that, but this is unnecessary in my opinion.
    Once you have a competent GPU, the rest will add little except more pixels in emulation since it's a CPU intensive task.

    This is interesting, but I am not sure about your methodology for testing. Shouldn't you be using a much stronger CPU if you are trying to see what effect the GPU's have on the games you selected? 10400F was never that powerful. I already knew that the 4070 is FAR above what you were trying to do and will hold up long term better than the 970; well, except for the 12GB of ram, but that only really effects games that came out in the last couple years and not old ones. Stronger CPU should be used when you are testing this setup out IMO.

    ur i5-10400F is to weak for PS3 emulation, ur cpu is missing AVX-512 Instructions!
    for perfect PS3 emulation (RPCS3) u need a CPU that supports AVX-512 Instructions, only Intel's 11th gen support that. so if u buy today a CPU for emulation, dont go with intel's 12th, 13th & 14th. some 12th gens have AVX-512 support, when u disable the efficient cores! especially the fact that intel's 13th & 14th will automatically overclock too high and destroy the cpu over time, is not the best cpu for the future.
    AVX-512 doubles the frame rate !
    AMD Zen 4 & Zen 5 have fully AVX-512 support and is the way to go for PS3 emulation in 2024!

      Nvidia has better drivers, both for Vulkan and OpenGL. In a CPU battle between Intel and AMD, Intel will perform better with RPCS3 because it makes better use of the AVX instruction, while for the rest of the emulators, it's safe to say the performance is about the same.

      It is not how many games per console, but more of how much the resource the game takes. For example: BOTW is one of the more resource intensive games for switch. This would give you an guage of how other games would perform. Otherwise, it is another problem and not the hardware that is causing the performance.
