An Introduction to the Dynasties of Ancient China

  • Ancient China produced what has become the oldest extant culture in the world, and this video is just an introduction to the different dynasties and rulers of Ancient China all the way up until the Song Dynasty. The Greeks and Romans knew the country of China as ‘Seres,’ meaning the land where silk comes from, but the name China comes from the Sanskrit Cina, which was derived from the Qin Dynasty. It’s important to note that the dynasties and periods of Ancient China’s history didn’t start and end neatly, but ran into one another with similarities including language and religion running through each period, but for clarity’s sake, the history has been broken up into different periods.
    From the small villages and farming communities developed a centralised government, and the first was the prehistoric Xia Dynasty which dates between circa 2070 and 1600 BCE and was once considered more of a myth than fact. This all changed though with excavations in the 1960s and 70s uncovering bronze works and tombs that prove there was societal development between the Stone Age villages and the later, cohesive Chinese civilisation.
    Under the reign of Shi Huangdi, not only was the Qin Dynasty established, but it was the beginning of the period known as the Imperial Era of China which ran from 221 BCE to 1912 CE. Shi Huangdi ordered all of the fortifying walls that separated the states to be destroyed and began the construction of one huge wall along the northern border of his kingdom, and although very little of the original wall remains, this was the first Great Wall of China (though it looked nothing like the famous wall built later).

      I'm interested in all of Chinese history but the Xia is super interesting to me because they were believed to be mythical for much of history.
      I'm also interested in the arts from early dynasties like the calligraphy on the Oracle Bones and the bronze vessels and the mythological creatures represented on the bodies of those vessels.

    I think the most interesting Chinese dynasty was that under the Zhou, since it was at this time when such incredible minds were born, like Sun-Tzu and Confucius. However, I find the Han dynasty absolutely important as well, because they made the first connections with the Western world, the Romans, and they also put the Silk Road to work. Also of significance was the Qin Dynasty, due to the fact that they somewhat managed to overcome the turmoil that was the region during the Spring & Autumn Period and the Warring States Period. And they turned China into an empire.
    So, to sum up and answering the question at the end, I would say my top three dynasties are:
    * Zhou Dynasty
    * Han Dynasty
    * Qin Dynasty
    Thank you for your insightful videos! They help me so much in my goal of learning history on my own.

    A very good effort to explain much of the dynasties in a brief time as best as possible. There was a couple of key moments that were skipped I'm guessing for video length.
    There was the Jin Dynasty from 266 AD to 420 AD which followed directly after the Three Kingdoms when the kingdom of Wei would go onto become Jin and the Imperial Mandate was usurped from the Cao family to the Sima clan....eventually the Sima clan united the lands when the last kingdom left of the three Wu surrendered to Jin. The Jin Dynasty would much like the Zhou and Han also have a Western Dynasty and an Eastern Dynasty both stemming from inner turmoil and relocation of the capital and the unsettling Sixteen Kingdoms (Sixteen States) period which took place during the Eastern Jin era.
    Jin Dynasty eventually lead to the Northern and Southern Dynasties in 420 AD to 589 AD. Some also call this period of China the Six Dynasties. This was a time of great unrest and fighting similar to the Three Kingdoms period but it was also a time when Daoism became very accepted and spread around China as well as Buddhism. Medicine also advances during this crazy time as well.
    The Northern and Southern Dynasties eventually were united by the Sui Dynasty which was covered in the video.
