Only took about 30 years but they made Cyclops cool again.... by letting him just be classic Cyclops. Also the Friends of Humanity's cartoonish bigotry feels way more unnerving now that we see the conspiratorial nonsense actual humans post on Twitter these days

    2 little nuggets.
    1. Continuity Rogue's pink dress is the same as episode one in the '92 series when they run into Jubilee at the mall. Just added gloves.
    2. Beast's ripping up the Sentinel, and doing the little cannonball is a move set from an X-Men fighting video game.

  • @arlibrarian
    @arlibrarian 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +16

I liked the episode. But of course I must highlight my nitpick: I got the impression that Trask was genuinely repentant and at the very least realized that in creating Master Mold he’d made something, in his words “Truly inhuman.” That moment where Master Mold tells Trask “Mutants *are* human. Therefore humans must be protected from themselves.” Stuck out to me as a kid. I get a person “regressing” but he just…made a new Master Mold? I feel like they knew Trask was just a character to bring back so we could have a big Sentinel fight to kick off series with a bang, disregarding what he had actually done in the series. It’s a small complaint in the grand scheme of things but I didn’t really see it being mentioned elsewhere and needed to get it off my chest.

    • @ookerdookers
      @ookerdookers 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

The season 4 episode “Courage” establishes that Gyrich and Trask were once again working together, and by implication of their partnership, on a new or restored sentinel program. Trask even goes so far as to tell Gyrich that “Mastermold was perfect.” So the show definitely re-established Trask as reverting to his former unrepentant self back in the ‘90s, prior to the current revival series.

I'm so very happy with how the series has started! I love that they kept the kinda jhanky art style but updated the animation. Please do episode 2! The trial is so important and interesting. That cyclops scene. I remember it, but it wasn't an origins reference. In one of the cartoons there was a storyline where magneto or sinister kidnaps and brainwashes havoc. Scott gets involved. Him and bro get advanced mutations. Then in finale of arc. They jump outta something. To keep from splat they used they buff bods and upgraded powers to stop their momentum. That's what came to my mind.

It's basically a variation on something Galactus says: "To me, my herald!", famously riffed on in Fantastic Four # 604, where a future version of Franklin Richards turns Galactus into HIS Herald, saying "To me, my Galactus!".

Storm coming in after Scott called her in for the Sentinel cleanup gave me chills. For me, tonallyand visually was the standout moment of ep 1. I enjoyed Jubes little light show dance (animations very fluid). And while I’ve never been a Cycloos hater, I’ve also never been a fan either. This episode didn’t change that but he definitely came off as a lot cooler than his other on screen interpretations.

“To me my X-men” was occasionally used by Prof X in the era pre-Changeling/Charles faking his own death…my recollection is that it was mostly used in Kirby-issues; I remember reading it in an X-men digest I had as a kid…it might have been when they guest-starred in another book…

Exiles (at least pre Claremont) was a truly great early aughts comic run. For all the grimmness of the concept (dead heroes from destroyed timelines trying to save them by saving OTHER timelines) it was a real fun read. And that Mimic has spawned so many nerd conversations about which 5 powers you'd pick to copy.

I think if you start opening the pandora's box on what these characters bodies SHOULD look like after so, so many actions or battles or power uses then we might as well just all go rewatch Kick-Ass because even their exaggerated reality is more grounded in that regard than superhero comics have EVER been. This is hardly the first time Cyclops has used his powers to save him from a long drop. Now lets see Batman jump off another roof holding onto a rope.

I would love to see more episode-by-episode breakdowns here! I was one of the kids who got into X-Men through the original animated series. Highlight of my Saturdays in middle school. It was so much fun to get into the comics in the late 90s in high school, and to read through the original versions of the stories I knew from the show and see how they'd adapted them for the cartoon. And watching '97 now, I've ended the first two episodes in giant grins and full of glee, because I can see what they're pulling from to make the stories they're going to tell, and I cannot wait to see how those stories will play out in this universe!
Was the first actual "to me, my X-Men" really Wisdom spoofing Xavier?! I know that was the first I'd read it, but I started X-books with a random array of comics my friend had, and glommed onto Excalibur hardest, so started my collecting and back-issue reading there. I didn't branch out from Excalibur until I'd gotten all of the original run in floppies. Fun fact: I got into reading the comics in the middle of Onslaught - the Excalibur tie-ins, at least.
With all the nods to the current continuity in the background, I wonder if/when Moira will show up in the new series, and how she'll be portrayed.

This show is such a breath of fresh air after the disappointments I've had with other rehashes of older shows lately (looking askance at the Netflix ATLA show). I really hope you do a video on Episode 2, because I really liked that episode. It's definitely what has sold me on wanting to watch the rest of X-Men '97.
Also, I'm curious if you'd want to do a video at some point on the X-Men '92 comic series that spun out of 2015's Secret Wars. It's been a while since I read it, but I remember it taking an interesting (and different) approach to continuing the original animated series.

There was a comic where Scott fell into the temple of Ozymandias, an acolyte of Apocalypse, and hit his head on a column falling into a trap. The panel literally suggests that this head bump undid the side effect that his previous one caused. Meaning that from that point forward, he should have been able to use his eyes without Ruby quartz glasses… Then nothing came of it. It was never mentioned again as far as I saw.

Jean Beauvoir Storm was my favourite, although it's probably comics nostalgia.
Also hoping now he's called Morph, they'll introduce Chas, his slightly crazy but endearingly dense brother - Brit-claymation reference.

I love the series so far, but I find myself still wondering why Rogue doesn’t just grab one of those Genosha collars for her own personal use. Just throw the collar on, boom, SO many kisses for Gambit, how bout it.

Probably some philosophical "there's nothing wrong with us" argument that works excellent for people with control but falls apart the second an actual dangerous mutant exists.

As someone who was literally born in 97, I've never seen the og show. These episodes are a wonderful introduction to this era, and got me to go back and pick back up the Claremont era. I think they're a great re-introduction to the XMen and I can't wait to see more

"...to me, my X-Men" are also the last words spoken in the episode, in a different context, coming from Magneto, and I thought it was a nice touch.

I need a video exploring Cyclops' powers. Not so much where his concussive blasts come from (the explanation has changed over the years), but how those blasts affect his body.
Do they push him back or not. It's super inconsistent, even within the fight scene at the beginning of the episode. He stands perfectly still and shoots a guy, then immediately fires at the ground and pushes himself across the room.
His eyelids can resist being pushed, does that mean anything. And the answer can't be that he can control when he gets pushed, because a major part of his backstory is he doesn't have control over his powers. Also, his and his brother's powers don't work against each other. How does that factor in?
I've heard some say his body is immune (for some reason) to all kinetic force, so that should make him immune to being punched or hitting the ground at terminal velocity.
    So many questions!

LOVING the new eps so far! Another ref I caught was that on Beast's bookshelf is "Animal Farm" - which is the book he's reading in the original series, season 1 ep 3, where he's in prison and is mocked for reading it by the guard who thinks it's a picture book.

Nice catch with that reference! Another book he had in jail was Civil Disobedience by Thoreau. That was particularly on point because it mirrored Beast’s jail storyline.

I only have 2 complaints about the first episode of X-Men 97.
1: It should have opened with Cyclops saying "Previously: On X-Men" followed by clips of the original series tenuously connected to what was about to happen in the episode.
2: I wish it had explained why Bishop was there. His time travel bling seems to work the opposite of the way it did before and I want to know why. This flaw may retroactively become a benefit if they explain it later.

Cyclops' optic blasts is just one of those "don't worry about it" things that you don't look too closely at, like how Wolverine's claws fit in his forearms or how Morph can violate the Law of Conservation of Mass every time they shapeshift or whatnot. I mean, if you're going to argue that he should have broken his neck when he cushioned his fall, then why didn't you argue something similar when he blew that hole in the wall of the warehouse? Or why he didn't suffer a concussion at bare minimum when he used his optic blast to slide himself and Bobby across the floor? Or why he wasn't pushed back an equal distance when he sent other grown men flying with his optic blasts? Or how (with his visor off and his eyes wide open) did Cyclops only knock a few people out and blow out the windows and not destory a huge chunk of the building and potentially surrounding buildings with a wide beam?
It's just not worth it to ask. Better to have fun with it and chalk it up to "mutants are magic."

Interesting hearing the origins of Morph. I thought he was based on the Mimic character because he too could mimic the abilities of mutants and died in combat whereas Changeling just faded out like a punk. I also thought they picked the name Morph because "morphing" was so popular at the time and it was a cooler name than mimic.
