My wife and I circumnavigated in the same design of boat (Maurice Griffiths waterwitch) 10 years after this happened to them. Always thought of them when we had interactions with whales, luckily for us always happy ones.
Their names were Maurice & Maralyn BAILEY! Their boat sank 4th March and they were rescued 30th June, meaning they were 119 days adrift. Apparently, the initial media reports said 117, so they kept it at this.
Same as John Glenny & crew on Rose-Marie - 119days adrift at sea. Though John & crew were in a capsized trimaran. Slightly better situation but not by very much. A salute to all mariners. Under adverse conditions there is always a chance - stay strong.
I heard about this when it happened on national news. As it turned out the 117 days at sea was a record that I believe still stands. I'd heard the boat got struck by a whale but didn't know the particulars. How could this sinking have been prevented? Well you'd probably need a steel boat to begin with.. no guarantee though. wow. one really needs a survival raft with some water and stuff onboard but the main thing you need is a SAT PHONE!
It's ridiculous that those ships within the shipping lanes cruise with their eyes closed. I was almost rundown by one about 10 miles offshore. Every course correction seemed to be countered by their coarse correction. Way to close for comfort.
How were they goi g to support themselves sailing all over the world?? They must be filthy rich to have enough money to have a brand new yacht built for them, and have money to not have to work and have the money needed to support themselves, and buy gas, ect. for the boat the rest of their lives!
31 foot barely qualifies as a yacht. They sold their house ,moved into a small apartment and both took jobs and saved. It's very do-able. When you live aboard with no car, house payment, insurance, electric, water and other bills your cost of living is lower. I'm retired with a modest pension. I live aboard my 35 foot sailboat and can put a nice amount of money in my savings every month. My highest costs are mantainence and food.✌🌊
I read their book years ago. Very inspiring. They went right back to the sea. Cruising legends.
Happy i hit that bell. Awsome video.
Awesome thank you! I really appreciate it.
They had a grueling experience but with a fortunate ending, its incredible what humans can endure ⚓💪
💪

Poor whale happily swimming in the only turf it knew!
“Ran the galley.” So she did the cooking. “Managed thief stores.” So she did the shopping. 😂🤣

Some Japanese man did 438 days adrift.
Sorry he was Mexican.
@Appp0 He was from El Salvador but was fishing out of Mexico for that was where he moved to. Peace out.

Now thats one whale of a tale….
💪
After that intro the.. “Suppose we sold the house and bought a yacht..?” Made me laugh lol.

No, thanks. I will stay home here in my bed.
🙂
Who wrote this "Reders Digest" crap?
Only rich people say “why not sell the house, build a yacht and sail around the world”
Great story, although the whale didn't attack the boat, simply bad luck they collided.
Since then little animal were telling us something was wrong in the oceans. Now in 2024 we realize what is
💪
Must have been prior to typical coast guard regulations that require a radio for emergencies on board.
Narrator sounds like Edward HermannRIP
😊
It's not a person....
ok but the 2 vessels tied together was never explained
In the video, I briefly mentioned that the they 'climbed into their inflatable dinghy and life raft.' I apologize for not providing more context.
June 30 what year?
It was in 1973
It wasn't an 'attack'. Pfft. Stupid sensationalist click bait.
They did not have the correct color for the boat hull, the color they used sets whales off!!! Should have done more research.
Poor whale
Whoa! A yacht with a five man crew! Ha, this time they took an entire crew to do everything. Yes, these powers filthy rich!
This was probably a real event but the story dialogue is a creation by a bored fiction writer.
