  • School buses are the safest way for children to get to and from school. In this new video, NTSB Dr. Kris Poland, a Biomechanics Engineer, highlights recent investigations, compartmentalization, and the enhanced safety benefit of lap/shoulder belts on school buses.

Having and using safety belts in a school bus should also help to get the students used to using them in a car, so there is an additional benefit to having them in the bus.

unused seat belts pose a safety hazard.

Who would have known. Seat belts are safer than no seat belts.

Although I have driven school buses equipped with seatbelts, the conventional school buses I have primarily driven for 12 years have no seat belts. Although I am an avid supporter of seatbelt usage personally, I oppose their use in school bus transportation. Just the THOUGHT of getting all the kids to buckle-up makes me shudder.
The school bus is primarily an urban/suburban vehicle. Compared to its everyday purpose, most rarely drive great distances at highway speed. The average school bus is a large, heavy vehicle. My 71-passenger, front engine bus with a full tank of fuel and one, not-so-svelte driver tips the scales at 18,010-lbs. Note the FOUR steps required to enter the bus: The bus has very high ground clearance. Short of being “T-boned” by a loaded semi, in most collisions, the bulk of the energy passes UNDER the vehicle.
In the event of an emergency, evacuating a bus fully loaded with belted, panicked children would be unlikely within 90 seconds.
The burden on the industry of mandating seatbelts and their usage negates what little improvement, if any, in safety.

I remember for years school buses didnt have seat belts, then in 1994 when i was in high school, the first brand new buses that our school district purchased came with lap belts only.

Because of the weight of the vehicle, basic physics..and the various sizes of young children..seat belts are more likely to cause injury than to prevent it..
Anti lock breaks however as well as collision avoidance alarms might actually be of benefit.

If there's a fire following a collision.....is the lone bus driver gonna get all those kids out that are buckled in??? The Kentucky church bus crash caused by a drunk driver in 1988 proves that seat belts may be more of a liability. Especially since many school districts are switching to gasoline powered buses...that feature alone is a tremendous risk.

one flaw in your statement... a car sits lower to the ground thus making less likely to tip in high winds unlike a school bus

Small school buses under 15,000 pounds requires seatbelts, as they behave more like a 15 passenger van, in which the vehicle easily rolls over and compartmentelization doesn't work, as these small buses are typically built on a van chassis. This law even applies to 14> passenger activity and shuttle buses and vans, as well as the average passenger car.

They may be "the safest vehicle on the road". But operator error can really screw things up.
From trusted high school seniors operating buses to fill in for sick drivers. If they can operate an 80 K harvester, they can drive a bus right?
To our bus driver in Florida being arrested in front of the school. She was always really abrasive, but she was pulled over doing 60 in a school zone by a state trooper, then she failed the breathalyzer. We got a PE coach to sub for her but he had to have a crash course before he could operate the bus correctly.

Most school buses are driven intrastate so the requirements depend on the state and most states require a commercial drivers license and the training to get it and maybe drug testing and a medical exam. In some states CDL drivers are held to a higher standard so if they lose the license due to traffic violations they lose the job too.

Never been in a school bus crash but the car I was riding in hit an oncoming car the day after we saw Signal 30 (traffic fatality) in ROTC. Also I hit a phone pole while riding my bike home from football practice.

My first 1st year in middle school in 6th grade I rode on a school bus that did not have seat belts. In my 7th grade year we occasionally had a school bus with seat belts. By my 8th grade middle school year I rarely rode the school bus preferring to have my mom drive me to school in the morning while I walked home after school with friends my only exception was rainy days when the bus was my only option to get home. I was not a happy camper rideing a school bus it was cramped quarters and in mid 1995 Conrail had told the railroad tracks in town to a new owner. Trains were vary infrequent with half the line in service and the other part out of service for 7+ years. The new owner fixed up the line from 5mph track speeds to 30 with in 2 years and trains rain 5 days a week rather than 1 every 1 to 2 weeks signals did not work and school bus drivers did not stop then proceed which made me nervous ehichba why I stopped rideing the school bus after a few near misses.

This is an excellent video. Thank you so much NTSB. I did recognize one of the young ladies (smile) as a passenger. There are no school buses with any type of seat belt in the schools in our area. Will there be a mandate in the near future for all buses to be equipped with belts?

I still dont trust my city school buses, they dont have no seatbelts and the seats are so worn and torn up that instead if acting as a cushion, you just hit the wood support blocks inside the seats or hit the thin metal wall that doesn't even keep in the air when it's cold outside =/

All these parents who drive their kids to school put more people on the road, congesting traffic in and around schools, therefore putting more lives at risk for accidents. I for one make sure my kids ride the bus, I do trust the driver much more than the other parents

but having seat belts on a bus is a problem because if you hit a tree with no seat belts you could possibly move over vs seat belts you slam into the tree and you would have to unbuckle and move

    • @kj4ilk

    School buses!!
I can remember the days when Greg Feith would be scaling mountains and launching the Go Team to Sioux City or following 585, 427 and 519. Or maybe it would be Palm 90 or JAL123 and that was every week or so.
And now they're down to seat belts on buses.
The next series of Disaster Confidential: about someone who tripped on the step.
There was a time when a gory air crash would be the most interesting item on the news and now all we've got is politicians. High time to close down the NTSB until things get dangerous again.
    Only kidding.
